Saturn is objectively the best planet out there.

Look at its marvelous rings, naturally flat, creating a beautiful sight for the eyes to see. The gas, so smooth and perfect, a breath-taking achievement of a grand planet.

I think both Pluto and Eris should be planets. The only reason Pluto isn't a planet anymore is because the scientists didn't want to add new planets. So they settled on removing one. Btw they call it officially "dwarf planet". Planet is in the name "dwarf planet", yet they say it's not a planet. Confusing.

Is this one of those threads?
I hope it is

Guys, just look at all the stuff around us, the world, our sentience, and the universe's contents. The concept of humans becoming sentient and becoming aware of everything around them is a truly baffling thing. What if humans never thought of the concept of owning land, what if there was never any formations of countries made in the world, what if when we colonized other planets the planets claimed independence from Earth itself, their mother planet? Imagine the scale of humans relative to planets in comparison, imagine Earth in comparison to the sun, imagine the sun in comparison to larger and larger celestial bodies. What if there is life out there, how would we humans handle it? Is there a way humans could advance any further in technology when we reach the age of universality? The concept of being able to think on our own, thinking up new things that don't even exist, and just being you is one that can shiver the spine. Why do us humans find music appealing to the senses? What if music was never invented? Do humans become more and more sentient as we evolve on? Will humans develop a higher form of thinking, the ability to conjure greater scientific accomplishments? Just look around at the world around you, imagine a camera zooming out from where you are sitting right now, slowly zooming out to a largest perspective of the Earth, showing you how puny you are in comparison to this planet that we live on every day. Imagine the view panning out further, to a gigantic sun, with the Earth as insignificant as a particle of dust. If the human race suddenly died out, would our technology, accomplishments, and feats all be in vain? What significance does our race have in this unforgiving universe? What significance do you have?

We always knew Pluto was small. when I was a kid people would talk about how tiny Pluto was....yet it was considered a planet.

Here should be the qualifications of a planet:

Is it spherical enough?
Does it not orbit around anything?
And does it have enough mass to pull other large objects (moons) into its orbit? (although an object does not need moons to be considered a planet)

Pluto fulfills all three qualifications....in my view it is a planet. Planet, dwarf planet, same fucking thing

Those are difficult and hefty questions, I sometimes worry that humanity will wipe itself out or enter a state of severe decline before we even establish a permanent foothold on another world in the solar system, and what if we do and things on Earth get so bad that the poor bastards have to come home immediately, only Earth can sustain them and Earth is having problems, so much for our two-planet insurance policy then.

And then I see that we humans are focusing too much on Earth, we've become pathologically altruistic and moral and it is like a heavy steel chain weighing us down, weighing our potential down.

If we returned to the era of Empires, of homogenous nations not overran by immigration, imagine then what great wonder of science and space exploration we can achieve with a stable, educated and safe population, having eliminated all hardships in their homelands they set their eyes for the stars, this is the opposite of what is happening now in Europe.

We are squandering our great potential right now, and it's so frustrating. Consider the frightening possibility that intelligent life is so precious and rare that we are the only ones to arise in the entirety of the solar system, now consider that we are currently squandering our future, advancing into space at a snail's crawl, all the while making our situation on Earth ever more desperate.

Is there no end to this madness, the vastness of our solar system is up for grabs, up for colonization, but we're still stuck on our home world, for god knows how long.

What could have been..

>The closest thing I have to a "phobia" is that we'll blow through all our resources and collapse to a roughly middle ages level of tech.

That's the worry I have that I wrote about.

It's a frightening possibility, not to mention the plethora of space junk and satellites we have in orbit.

God forbid theres a WWIII the first such war to see space as a battlefield and in the scramble to deprive the enemy of information and and advantage in space, we deprive ourselves of access to a safe LEO and beyond should the unthinkable Kessler syndrome occur by nations hell bent on wiping enemy technology and not caring about the consequences.

I can't see the US doing it, they have the X-37B and possible future version that could easily locate, and deorbit or capture and enemy satellite, but a nation like China or Russia or so might not give a shit and blast the satellite from a long range missile making LEO that much more dangerous to inhabit and travel in.

Commercial ventures in LEO might lose their appeal if the risk of striking space junk and debris increases to 40% or something, then these ventures might lose client and interest and we would set back our progress in space even further.

That's just a worst case scenario though, but one to keep in mind.
