It's a frightening possibility, not to mention the plethora of space junk and satellites we have in orbit.
God forbid theres a WWIII the first such war to see space as a battlefield and in the scramble to deprive the enemy of information and and advantage in space, we deprive ourselves of access to a safe LEO and beyond should the unthinkable Kessler syndrome occur by nations hell bent on wiping enemy technology and not caring about the consequences.
I can't see the US doing it, they have the X-37B and possible future version that could easily locate, and deorbit or capture and enemy satellite, but a nation like China or Russia or so might not give a shit and blast the satellite from a long range missile making LEO that much more dangerous to inhabit and travel in.
Commercial ventures in LEO might lose their appeal if the risk of striking space junk and debris increases to 40% or something, then these ventures might lose client and interest and we would set back our progress in space even further.
