The industry has changed. Consoles have changed. Right now there is one console really. The PS4. Nintendo is trying to come with a differentiator that will allow them to skip full HD dev budgets, which is just wishfull thinking. Most gamers already see them as the Fischer Price of gaming. MS already said that there are no more 3rd party exclusives and most of their games are coming on the PC. They even felt the need to go ahead and calm people down saying there will totally be another Xbox.
There will never be a new console. The big 3 of the industry are Mobile (freemium, microtransactionc), PC (mmos, mobas etc), PS4 (AAA).

This is that FPGA console that's supposed to be able to play just about any retro cartridge game with an adapter right? Its an interesting concept, but in practice I think a Steam Machine with Retroarch and/or Kodi would be better.

It's the retro magazine system made from jaguar molds. We were in talks with the company but their Kickstart failed. They had some good people on their team but essentially how it works is you develop your game for any retro 2d console and it will play it. The thing is you need to know assembly and have the consoles manuals. Most programmers aren't smart enough, some documentation is hard to find and whether or not it's justifiable if the install base is small.
