>>246280580
The problem is that it never was. A lot of people don't realize that World of Warcraft came out in 2004, which was late as fuck in comparison to a lot of other things. It's the same year as fucking Half-Life 2.
There had been several MMOs already out by then that blew WoW out of the water. Planetside was past its first anniversary, Ragnarok Online was going through its third year, Runescape was the most popular browser game, Everquest had been out for half a fucking decade, and even fucking Eve Online had been released the year prior.
But WoW was made by BLIZZARD, so it didn't fucking matter that it was outdated, was three years behind in terms of graphics, had a comparatively empty amusement park world, and had some of the most basic and boring gameplay in the form of constant fetch and deliver quests. It had that Warcraft name, so it had to be good, right?
It was everyone's first MMO because it was one of the first AAA MMOs. People who were introduced to MMOs through WoW are no different from the people introduced to FPSs by Modern Warfare or RPGs by Skyrim.

Whoah, I still play there, I'm unsubbed now but waiting for WoD.
>>246281451
I just explained how it wasn't the best.
People only liked it because
>They had never played an MMO before
>Blizzard's advertising and popularity made it easy to get in to
>It used the Warcraft name
And that's fucking it. Like I said, it had the exact effect on the genre as Modern Warfare. Was MW good? God no, but its sales were through the roof because it was babby's first FPS and since the target audience couldn't recognize a good FPS if it was presented to them, they ate that shit up.
Had even HALF of WoW's initial population played any other MMO, they would have dropped it after the trial period, no questions asked.
The original login screen music is my favorite.

Fuck off retard
The main reason wow and gaming was better was that the industry wasnt completely set on money and people werent the kind of idiots they are today
Myspace was the closest normalfags used, youtube was new to the game, 4chan was about lolis and reddit didnt exist
People/Society as a whole have changed a lot in the last 10 years and its one of the main reason games suck especially MMOs.
The thing that made or broke MMOs were the community

A good few 'nerds' and 'gamers' played WC3, but the absolute majority had never touched WC2 or 1, for that matter.
I'm just saying, that Blizzard made WoW for those who liked Warcraft. It wasn't something they just slapped on for brand recognition.

I personally played Ragnarok Online (2D korean grinding game that at the time of WoW's release boiled down to "Get a group of friends, camp a MVP spawn and grind for cards until your acolyte/mage telebitch calls a sight"), Ultima (fun, but dated), EQ (so fucking dated, raiding was dead unless you were part of a well established group and were willing to put in the time commitment), DaoC (Fun, but died ignobly), Lineage (Korean grindan gaem) and a couple others that are escaping me at the moment. I learned early that you had to grind a profession ASAP as soon as the next expansion comes out if you wanted to be rich.
So I powerleveled my tailoring during the start of each expansion, spending all of my gold in order to max it out.
Once I start making the high-level threads, I make my gold back in 2-3 sales, plus I end up profiting in the long run due to all of the raiding guilds that need my threads.
I probably made around 200k during Cata using this process, and I quit the game before 4.1 came out.
>>246281203
You likely know too much about BC for it to really be fun again. You've already run Karazhan a dozen times, and while that first run on Corecraft might be great, the subsequent runs will just be a bore. That feeling that the community got as a whole, of just being sick of the content, just before the next expansion will come right back.

Yeah, I leveled up skinning and made a damn killing from selling the leather obtained from the mobs in Cata. There used to be this one mob spot in the Maelstrom or whatever (I forgot the name of the zone), they used to spawn frequently in packs and were an easy source of gold until Blizzard patched them so you can't skin them anymore.
I purchased my epic flyer, 320% speed training, and a whole host of other things from the Skinning gold alone. Just remembering shit like this makes me want to resub, but I don't want to take another dose of heroin known as WoW.

On some fights it was a smart move to downrank one or two levels to maintain your manapool, especially in longer fights or fights with a specific mechanic (Viscidus).
Healers were the ones who really downranked hardcore though, especially since throughput didn't increase linearly with mana costs. It was more efficient to have three ranks of Renew, and two of Heal on your bars, instead of spamming max rank Renew and Heal.

>discover to my chagrin that vanilla raiding as a warlock consisted of "Summon us, Make us healthstones, put up Elements for the Mages and try not to be a burden"
At least my time to shine came at Sunwell, god did I savor that.
>Using trade chat or LFG chat to look for groups
>During a time when realms had a sense of community instead of this Dungeon Finder/Cross Battlegroup crap now
What's a good and populated Burning Crusade private server these days?
RIP warcraft
>>246283776
Hey, if I'm recruiting other warlocks, then I have to make sure that they're as good a player as I am, otherwise it looks bad on my part.
>>246283776
I probably play less than most casual people. That is because we hold ourselves to higher standards and want to be efficient. That's fucked if you recruit just anyone.
>>246282802
>>246282601
What >>246282949 said, you coming along to our heroic prog guild? Then you better fucking know your shit.
>>246283793
>not linking the Demon Hunter vs A'dal video
It's like you really hate fun.
>>246278254
>that demon hunter looking night elf
>my dissappointment when I made a Night Elf Hunter because I wanted to be Illidan
>>246283943
So lonely.
Was fun playing on <the vidya> while I could. I want to join again whenever corecraft starts up but I'll have no time with working everyday
>>246283960
>recruit a warlock
>he's too good
>he replaces you
>>246283342
>1:1 with the original vanilla
I call bullshit.
>>246283683
Is it even possible to pull aggro anymore?
>>246283942
Hellgrounds, just have to deal with polish people
I hate it how in wotlk you had to really try to run out of mana as a healer
Shit was ridiculous
>Not the best event
>Purposefully failing the Undercity WoW Lore quest so your raid group could attack your own Faction Leaders.
I believe we were the first guild to ever kill all of their own faction leaders. Butthurt Thrall lovers were crying so hard in General chat and no one could do anything about it.
>>246284028
Given that we only need to be in the same faction in WoD, why don't we all raid together again?
All that's left is... What faction?
>>246284072
It's difficult, and if you do, it's probably the fault of the Tank.
Threat generation is such a fucking joke, especially with Vengeance.
remember when Blizzard still used to make good manuals full of interesting information? D2, WoW, WC3
fuck man. now i open the box and theres like 1 page that says "put the disk in you idiot"
this depresses me more than anything
>>246284072
As someone who plays MoP: not really.
A tank in blues does more threat than a DPS in BiS gear
>>246283683
Well Taunt functioned differently then too if I remember.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Taunt in Vanilla just cause a certain amount of threat, like sunder or other abilities. So the mob could get pulled off and the tank could taunt all god damn day to no avail.
So what happened to the Rebirth private server guild?
>>246284072
Trash/LFR, yes. Single target boss? Not a fucking chance.
>>246284041
Could happen.
It never has happened, but it could.
Although, when I was playing, there were only two other warlocks that were better than me. One was in the top raiding guild, and one ended up switching to a druid as his main.
>>246283253
>Most people left and are going to Rebirth after the feenix staff fucked the server.
I really, really wish more people played on Rebirth. It's kinda what kills private 1x servers - lack of population to do anything.
>>246283927
>beat the shit out of the enemy warlock
>they are amazed because he was supposedly untouchable
Whut warlocks with t2-t3 got soloed by rogue without gear. Prolly the worst class with druid in vanilla.
>>246284137
I meant <the vidya> on the feenix server Emerald Dream
>>246282949
>we're trying to be the best in the realm
From what I saw from my raiding career from patch 1.4 to 3.2, the guilds which really were 'the best in the realm' would operate purely on inside or esteemed recommendations. The ones which required lengthy ass posts on their guildlaunch or filling out surveys were the guilds that were perpetual MC into AQ20 guilds that would just feed higher attuned players to better guilds, then later perpetual Kara+ZA attempt guilds that would do the same.
I know this because I tried to run one when ZA came out, and killed it 4 months later when I realized we'd never reach 3 chest because geared players went up and I was on a perpetual recruiting bender.
>mfw getting the shakes and urge to go back to WoW
I think race model update will be the breaking the point, if only for 15 day returnee trial.
>>246284151
You know what I remember?
Cracking open the fucking MASSIVE book included in Diablo, with all the Samwise artwork splashed throughout it.
I also just realized one of my first masturbatory experiences was over his Rogue concept piece.
>>246284340
It's going to be shit
The models are literally 15-20 hours of work(at max) each and it takes them a whole year to release them all.
Can remember our server suffering from serious lag issues so we couldn't do onyxia. We all decided to raid Ironforge instead, we couldn't get out of the tram station though because the alliance knew well in advance we were coming and just camped us outside the entrance.
>>246284191
it would bring you up the threat level of the highest guy. but if they kept going, they would pull threat very quickly
it could also miss. 5% or something like that
Remember when classes had unique abilities
>>246280298
I solo'd that quest at 18. I was so proud, I enchanted it and kept it in my bank as a momento. I started wow in 2005 and quit in early '10 shortly after beating the Lich King.
>40 man raid
>enemies only have 16 debuff slots
>any new debuff that got applied bumped off an old one
>every warrior had that god damn bleed talent
>every druid threw in a moonfire
>every rogue was poisoning them
>every mage was applying that frost debuff
It's amazing anything was accomplished when half your shit was rendered useless in a manner of seconds by another asshole.
>>246282278
>that guy hiding on the left
>>246282824
>Deeprun Tram.
Nostalgia Bomb
I forgot this existed.
>>246283965
You're paying money to engage in menial labor at that point. That's insane.
You know, in other activities outside of MMORPGs, the people who graduate from amateur to professional are actually paid.
That doesn't happen here, why do it?
why did Blizz take the fun out? Fucking hell it reminds me of Australia
>all mobs including world bosses are leashed and can't be kited
>>246280298
>dat feel when Verigan's Fist was a tremendous weapon upgrade for Paladins at the time
Nowadays you would probably replace it 15 minutes later because gear and experience and give to you at every step.
>>246282601
fuck u
guilds like these were what made raiding hard to get into
I can never go back to WoW anons
>take a break for a good while
>come back for Wrath
>it was meh at best
>make a warlock on a completely different server than what I use to
>meet this chick who helps me when im just starting with my low level ass
>she's kind of cool
>start hanging out with her
>end up hanging out with her boyfriend on their as well
>don't really care since I wasn't looking for a grill and he turned out relatively bro-tier
>her boyfriend talks about starting a guild
>whythefucknot.jpg
>we joke its probably not going to succeed in the ocean of guilds already
>fuck it we do it and get surprised
>get members
>get enough members where we can even start doing raids
>even end up having on those cheap dinky sites as guild recruit tool as well
>im made co-founder and tantamount officer when bro-tier leader wasn't their
>first time in years I start to have fun
>one of the members we invite starts to get really friendly with the the leader and his grill
>I never liked this guy and made it known
>wanted to kick him but leader won't let me
>got to the point all they wanted to do was hang out with him
>feel a crushing lonliness and anger towards this anon that came out of fucking nowhere taking my friends
>one day I log in and he's officer with same power as me
>I leave the guild and never join another guild
>can find no reason to keep playing
>unsubscribe and uninstall
Theirs even more I could go into anons but im sure your not interested. I was very very bitter in those days. Im glad im like that no longer.
>>246284531

>manage to frost shock him before he enters stealth
>keep spamming frost shock while kiting him
>tfw a shitty blue geared shaman killed a T3 rogue
>>246282601
>dat feel when being a raid leader in vanilla
It was like trying to herd cats.
>>246284254
He had his own pocket rogue. That's why he was considered untouchable at the time. I had the fortune of dotting him up repeatedly from the roof of his base while he was on D.
>>246281153
I'd want to say that I'd try it if it went free to play.
But if I couldn't get through the free 20 levels, how could I ever reach the end game of 90 or whatever it currently is.

>>246284765
I miss 40 mans, if only because it created a sense of community within the larger whole of the raid group.
You knew who your team was, and by fucking god, you had either a role or class officer and you own chat channel you used during raids, so you didn't fill up /ra.
>you will never talk shit about the tanks with the other six healers in your /join guildnamehealers, and never talk shit about the decurse team in /join guildnamedispel
Or was my guild the only one anal retentive enough to do that?
>>246282126
>Remember when your first mount required you to be level 40?
And it was 90G or something? There was no way you would have actually acquired enough to pay for training and mount the moment you reached lvl 40. Well, not unless you played the AH with Swiftthistle and were drowning in money by lvl 25.
>>246284714
correct. but seriously, fuck those wankers

I've always been under the impression that people played video games because it's an effortless distraction. I know I do.
But paying for the 'privilege' of optimizing spreadsheets and reading résumés for something ultimately transient and completely useless in reality just seems a little bit mental.
>>246285339
People play video games because they enjoy it, just like any hobby
>>246285339
Jesus Christ you sound just like Stephen Merchant
I can imagine him saying something just like that
And then Karl comes in like "yeah but it's fun"
