What went right?

The shadows and lighting were top shelf. They still look great today.

The level design and enemy placement are just about perfect.

Great atmosphere and soundtrack, truly spooky and not in a cheesy over the top way.

The progression of difficulty was spot on.

The combat is still hip-fire strafey, just like it should be.

What went wrong?

It's too easy on veteran.

The "enemies spawn behind you" thing becomes a meme about halfway through the game.

The shotgun fucking sucks.

So does the PDA.

Combat is slow.

I was about 20 or so when the game first came out and i hated it. I wanted it to be more fast paced like the other two games.

I just played through it this year for the first time since then (i had never finished it before) and I gotta say, after 11 years i think the game was and is severely underrated.

Still sucks compared to the originals, but that goes without saying.

I agree for the most part.

It's hard to separate the game from the originals but I can't help but wonder how much differently the game would have been received if it wasn't a doom game but instead some other survival horror game.

I think it would have been an instant classic.
>>
>>320210985
What went wrong? Well it wasn't Doom, that's for sure. It was a spooky Doom themed FPS, but it wasn't Doom.

Doom 4 looks more like Doom, but I'm worried it's not Doom either. Time will tell.

aside from the low poly characters (everyone wears a loose futuristic jump suit to hide it) and a few quite shitty textures, the game still looks amazing in vanilla form.

>The shotgun fucking sucks.

This is one of my biggest complaints.

In doom and doom II the shotguns are the players bread and butter, their bottom bitch, their right hand man.

Doom 3 shotgun is useless at any range beyond 3 feet. The spread is retarded. You're better off using the chainsaw once you're close enough to be effective with the shotgun.

Not very doom-like at all.

Hey it's not like they did a bad job.
Game is good, it just feels wrong since it's a DOOM game, meaning that we wanted fast paced combats with powerful guns against powerful enemies in big maps.
Now that I think about it, DOOM 3 was the exact opposite of Doom 1-2.
Welp.

>Not understanding how to use the Doom 3 shotgun

If you know how to dodge thrown projecticles the shotgun is the absolute best weapon in the game. It literally destroys the difficulty and can take out almost every single enemy in one shot.

HellKnight, Cacodemon, Mancubus excluded.
>>
Can we all agree that the original version is better than BFG version?

Original
>super dark
>can hold either your flashlight, or your weapon, not both
>maximum spooky

BFG
>brighter
>can have flashlight and gun out at same time
>minimized spooky
>>
>>320217187

You still have to deal with its piss slow reload.
>>
>>320217291
Ya gotta balance out the weapons stupidly high damage output somehow. The reload really isn't a problem since it will never take 8 shots to kill any enemy, if you use it properly.

>>
>>320217430

Generally, yes, but they game goes into a lot of detail about the space station, what exactly UAC was doing there, how the crisis first started, their reactions to it, etc.

The emails and audio recordings really fleshed out the world and made it so much more than the original games' "you're a space marine go kill these guys in space".
>>
>>320216401
I like that it is it's own thing. Watching these e3 gameplay demo's of Doom4 now has me a little disappointed. It's just Brutal Doom on the IDtech4 engine... is that all we want?

>BFG version isn't brighter.

Actual differences:

>All ammo pickups give you double the amount of a normal pick up.
>Sergeant has stupid hair now.
>Resurrection of Evil "gas corridors" no longer require a gas mask and oxygen tanks to traverse.

Really there isn't that much different. The flash light only really changes the game if you haven't played through the game before.

>fov is horrible, only game that has ever made me feel nauseous because fov is like 15
>it doesn't play like doom 1/2 at all, at ALL
>it's too dark, it's not scary, just annoying
>the game looks like clay

Doom 4 looks even worse. What a disgrace to the series these 2 games are.
>>
>>320219171

You can change the brightness back to the original using a config edit i think.

If you don't mind the flashlight being changed, it's a good way to experience the game at a stable 1080p 60fps.
>>
>>320219418

You can adjust the FOV on PC.
>>
>>320219480
I had just read that config bit on the Steam discussions, yeah. Went on there after seeing the bit here to see what could be done about it. Decided to stick with the BFG edition afterall, flashlight thing isn't a biggie to me. The massive change in brightness was though. Just completely changes the atmosphere.
