About to start an XCOM EW Ironman run. I've had some difficulties with this before, so please give me some tips!
what difficulty?
rush satellites and uplink thingies
don't send out satellites until there's 1 day remaining until the end of month council thingy
use them to save countries from leaving xcom
if you can afford it, an early mec trooper will really fuck shit up
research wise rush carapace armor and laser weaponry, shit's extremely important
make sure to get an early officer school to get the two squad-size upgrades
half-cover = no cover
make liberal use of smoke grenades, flash bangs, and hunker down
never dash unless absolutely necessary, fucking overwatch
overwatch so fucking much
no seriously overwatch fucking all the time
remember to use grenades to blow up enemy cover
and don't rely on that 80% shot to finish that one enemy off
90% shots can still miss
rockets can miss
grenades cannot miss

Build at least one. It's adorable, ends every turn ready for reflex shots, can self heal, acts as cover in a pinch, can bypass terrain with flight mode, and doesn't have recovery time between missions.

Go for engineers early on.
Don't go after meld unless its extremely convenient.
Running totally out of sight is strongest defense. It forces ayy lmao's into playing on your terms. You already know he's there, you don't need to see him fire plasma at you to confirm he's still there.
Avoid council missions unless you know what you're doing. Finishing the Slingshot missions might give you a huge advantage early on though.

how exactly are you having trouble then? I recall normal on vanilla being nigh impossible to lose any of your troops unless it's deliberate

Normal ironman shouldn't be that bad. Just keep your head cool and don't rush things. Never use your entire turn for moving if you're uncertain where the aliens are.
Getting better gear is also important, don't be afraid to stun enemies even if its iron man. You still have a decent shot even if the circumstances aren't perfect. If it fails, just kill it in the same turn with another squaddie.
