a bit. it has repetitive level design, and quite a few boring segments of just retracing the same steps you just stepped over.
not just in the spoopy woods chapter, you did this the first half of the island chapter, repeatedly during the moon chapter, 90% of the train was just walking up and down the train talking to people, etc.
however it's still an excellent game in just about every other regard. To call it one of the best games on the gamecube is no exaggeration, to call it one of the best RPGs of all time is no exaggeration, though perhaps one of the best games of all time, that might be a bit much.
I'd only ever think WELL of a person who called it one of their personal favorite games, though.

Nope, at least not according to scoring sites, critics etc. Everyone on /v/ will say it's great because most of them have played it and loved it. Hands down probably one of if not the best RPG on Gamecube at the very least.
Only reason I would see outright hate or trolling towards it on here is because of le counter-culture and people being mad that other people like it.
It does have a few flaws but they hardly dampen the full game, especially if you compare it to the first one which was also pretty damn great.

It's because neither game is perfect, but they do the opposite things right.
TTYD has a much better battle system and writing, but 64 has a better overworld and pacing.
A game that mixes both of their qualities together would be perfect, but it doesn't exist.

Superstar Saga's first half is phenomenal but its after Woohoo University the only standout section is Guffawha Ruins, and the combat gets extremely repetitive by the endgame since it never really gets any more complex and there's no reason to not spam Chopper Bros the entire time.
I fucking love Super Mario RPG but its timed hits systems is really underdeveloped and two of the four party members are completely useless by the endgame, so I'd have to knock it down a peg or two for the combat compared to its peers. Smithy is also a really underwhelming final boss.

Super Mario RPG's overworld style makes it pretty distinct compared to Square's other SNES RPGs, the combat is well polished despite the difficulty and the writing is really fun.
It's actually one of the better RPGs they released for the system. It's not in the same league as FFV, FFVI or Seiken Densetsu 3, but calling the game shit for not being on the same level as arguably the best RPGs ever released is a bit unfair.
And every Mario RPG is baby's first RPG.

IMO it's really overrated and has many key flaws stated in this thread. It's a great game but people are giving it too much credit. Personally I think SPM is really underrated just because doesn't have the same gameplay as its predecessors which is really just QTEs. (Not that those are bad, but people just disregard that solely for that.) It easily has the best story and character dialogue in the Paper series. It did have its tedious moments, like the infamous world 5-1 second set of blocks.

It's like Final Fantasy VII. Good, but not the masterpiece many claim it is. From my point of view, it's a good example of how exactly a sequel should be.

BIS isn't overrated. Pretty much everyone that has it as its favorite in the series admits it's because of Bowser goodness. I've yet to see someone argue that any M&L other than the first one deserves first place in "best in the series" (not "my favorite in the series"). And this is coming from a Bowserfag who prefers BIS. M&LSS is just a lot better.

To a certain extent, it is overrated. If you analyze the game objectively there are a lot of bad slow points. Fuck most of the island chapter.
However, COMPARATIVELY, it is not overrated. It would easily merit a spot in anyone's "Top 50 Games" list.
