Of course there's bound to be a few older nerds who actually get emotionally invested and become cheerleaders for this or that company, but MOST of the time, I'd like to believe it's just kids being kids and bashing the console they don't own simply because they can't have it.
I used to have a die-hard Sega fanboy friend when I was a kid, and in fact he was the one who introduced me to Sega. At the time I only had a NES and SNES and didn't know what Sega was. He kept telling me how Sega was better, and I ended up getting a Genesis from my grandma because I genuinely became interested on Sega. I was not disappointed.
The kid always treated Nintendo as kiddy, not as good as Sega, and used catch phrases he'd read on Sega ads on magazines at the time. I just thought it was funny but I didn't think Sega was better than Nintendo or viceversa, as I had both systems and was enjoying both.
Long story short, one summer I went with my family on vacations, and lent him my SNES and games.
Him and his older brothers loved it, so much that they eventually sold their Genesis to buy a SNES.
