>new twitch function is called Cheering
>you buy, literally buy with real money, twitch points
>then you can spend them to use the "cheering emoticons" when you want to praise the streamer
>no money is sent to the streamer, but you get a badge showing that you cheered for him a lot in your profile

Twitch now literally has a "pay2post" emoticon for a price of a at least a few cents EACH to be used during le epic moments such as when someone subscribes.

This is it. The pinnacle of gaming. The highest point of the millennials generation What a time to be alive.

Have you chosen your new hobby yet, /v/?

Cheering is a new way to show support for streamers and celebrate the moments you love with the community, all right in chat. A Cheer is a chat message that uses Bits, which are evolving animated emotes that you can buy. Bits emotes can be used one by one, all at once, or anywhere in between. Using many at once shows more support and creates cooler emotes!

it's not pay2post, you stupid cuckold, it's a way to get around chargebacks from donations. this way twitch centralizes the ability to 'donate' while also protecting the streamer and retaining a small percentage cut of the profits. it's paypal but within a closed system and without the possibility for fraud.

>>
A few points to be devils advocate here:
1. This is literally just Twitch adding a way for streamers to have an in-house system of donations. Most streamers have to set up their donations from one source or another and those take a cut as well.
2. Even though the icon of the cheer eventually gets posted away by other chatter, the highest amount you've given is also put next to your name. A streamer I watch has been in the beta of this for a while, those who donate that big star-of-david one also have a red star-of-david-ish icon next to their name for the rest of their time in that chat, so it wont be forgotten, it's gonna stare at them whenever you say something.
>>
>>344615654
It isn't? Are you seriously implying that wanting to make money justifies anything and everything in order to do so?

It's like if a company sold you a video game, but in reality it's just a blank disc with nothing on it. They were just trying to make money though, so there's nothing shitty about it
>>
>>344615636

I didnt say it was

but twitch is taking money for doing literally nothing

regardless it's stupid and "cheers" are nothing more than glamorized tokens for camwhores.
>>
>>344615454
The 100 bits is equivalent to 100 cents. Twitch's 30% is added onto that with the extra .30 you pay to get 100 bits.
>>
>>344615748
>those who donate that big star-of-david one also have a red star-of-david-ish icon next to their name for the rest of their time

>>
>>344615730
or perhaps...provide a service?

>>344615779
With your example, it's a scam. If the thing marketed is not the thing received, it's fraud. You should have just said "if a company breaks a law, there's nothing shitty about it".
>>
>>344615748
Counterpoints:
1. Donating money to people who stream themselves playing video games is stupid.
2. Paying money to have a red star next to your name on a streaming site is even more stupid.
>>
>>344616014
>With your example, it's a scam. If the thing marketed is not the thing received, it's fraud.

Why does it matter? How is wanting to make money a scam or fraud?
>>
>>344616024
I mean, some people just want to give the people money. And I doubt most people who pay for bits don't pay to get an icon next to their name, they just want to give money to the streamer. You don't have to donate, but other people who might want to are given an avenue to do it where the streamers don't have to go and set up a paypal or anything, it's just built into the system they already stream on.
>>
>>344615779
In a better world there'd be an easier way to curb outrageous jewing other than not buying the product, because in the end there's some times you basically just have to give in to outrageous prices and companies know they can milk you for your pocket change and nobody can stop them.

Luckily this isn't one of them They're not replacing a product that already exists for free because cheers never existed before. Just don't buy it.
>>
part of me is thinking this is really stupid

at the same time, if twitch can make money off stupid people, is it dumb if they succeed?

regardless I dont see the appeal of this shit.
>>
why would you do that when any popular channel has chat that moves so fast no one would notice.

Better off donating so at least you get the streamer to read/respond to you. Not to mention the streamer gets a more money from it.

Personally, I dont think many ppl will use it, not even fuccbois and cucks
>>
>>344616140
Because the situation at hand is illegal. DLC, Bits, P2W is not illegal.

Ah I see. Here I guess I can change my statement to appease you.

There is nothing wrong with companies trying to make money in legal ways, that abide by the laws of the country they are selling in.

>>344616224

Why does it matter if it's illegal? Taken your original argument to it's logical conclusion, those laws shouldn't exist because the company is just trying to make money. All transactions are voluntary agreements between all parties concerned, even in a scam.

Of course, now you're backpeddaling and revising your argument to cover up the gaping flaw in your logic. Maybe you should ask yourself why those consumer protection laws exist in the first place. And no, I'm not saying the solution to every shitty buisness practice is to outlaw them.

I'm having a hard time thinking who would use this. Maybe children or people vying for the attention of a female streamer?

As for alternate hobby I've been getting into brewing, made some cider, stout, and sort of bungled an ale but was drinkable. Unfortunately brewing doesn't have steam sales or humble bundle equivalents. Fortunately tabletop rpgs can be cheap as free just require time, planning, and not shit people to enjoy.
>>
>>344616197
I just wish this was available to everyone and not just partner streams so I could abuse it and make some easy money. It's obvious everyone will be making bank off this once it goes live.Too bad us plebs can't take part in it.

What the fuck is the point? To encourage pissing contests between fans?
>"He posted an emote worth 100 points so I gotta post one worth 200!"
>"I should post one worth 1000 right away, that will impress everyone!"
>"If I post the most expensive one, maybe this streamer will be my friend?"
>>
>>344606754
the whole cheering thing makes absolutely no sense and i've seen very few people even bothering with it. but it's still basically free revenue from retards

i don't know what you really get for your money in the end though. there's barely anything to justify $5 twitch subs in the first place.
>>
>>344617082
Deflecting because you're losing the argument. The best you can do backpeddal and pretend like you aren't wrong without making any actual points. Just shows how emotional you are with no logic. Like a rat who has been cornered.

You have no argument.
>>
>>344617167
That's not what you said.

It's like you're just a retarded shitposter.
>>
>>344614229
This actually. I tried out a Twitch stream once to see what the fuss was about and... wow, is it just a giant contest to be noticed by the streamer/other people in the chat? It moves so fast and it's never anything helpful. It's just copypasted ASCII art or memes or images and icons and shit. I swear these guys have a .txt file filled with shit to copy paste or something.
>>
>>344617930
Argument is that there is nothing wrong with companies trying to make money in legal ways, that abide by the laws of the country they are selling or providing their services in.

You've yet to refute that point, instead you just move the goalpost, which isn't an argument.
>>
>>344615748
So it's vanity charity, right? You know, donating money just to look rich/cool and show off.
>>
>>344606754
>no money is sent to the streamer
this is the part that makes it seem quadruple pointless.

you're paying twitch for useless gif emotes you can only use once... but they stay on your profile permanently so people can see which channel you'd paid twitch to cheer for?
>>
Twitch streamers are actually kind of scary when you think about it, it preys on that "one guy" and just fucking throttles him for all he's got. They may pretend not to know but you can see their faces kinda tense up when they read some of the more weird donations.

You know the guy, that guy with a modest amount of money that thinks handing it out to "friends" is all it takes for them to be actual friends, all it takes to form an actual genuine bond. Like just reading some of the donation comments is fucking bizarre, telling them about their day, consoling them if they show a hint of distress, fucking normal shit you'd share with a best bud.

Fuck Twitch, this move is borderline evil.
>>
>>344618874
The random 3 dollar donations to Lirik/Summit about their groceries are sort of depressing. These people must not really have an outlet to talk about their day.
>>
>>344618762
money isn't directly sent, no.

The streamer gets .1 cent per bit. So 100 bits = $1.
>>
>>344618453
The argument was that there's nothing with shitty buisness practices, because companies are just trying to make money. You moved the goalpost and backpeddeled on your argument after I refuted it and pointed out your shit tier logic justifies scams, legal or otherwise.

Saying "there's nothing wrong with it as long as it's legal" is completely retarded for a whole host of reasons and one of if not the most cliche argument from corporate apologists. The law is not the sole determining factor of whether it's a shady or shitty buisness practice, or if it's valid to call them out as such. Especially in markets as unregulated as online digital transactions. For instance laws regulating gacha games in Japan didn't exist up until recently. Does that mean gacha buisness were any less shady before the law came into effect? Use your brain for once. The solution to buisness being shitty isn't to regulate the shit out of everything, nor is it to tell people "don't like it don't buy it" as if they're not allowed to say anything because it's not illegal.

But please go ahead and reply with more deflection and clever quips about how you're right and I'm wrong and retarded for posting etc like a cornered rat.
>>
>>344616014

this gif is misleading since the chat it uses as an example isn't moving at like a billion miles a second. if the stream you're "cheering" has more than 1000 people in chat good fucking luck getting your paid emote seen by the streamer, or by anyone, before it's washed away by a wave of kappas or meme references or copypastas

That's the really sad thing about streaming/youtube personalities/whatever.

You have a couple guys, maybe like 5 max, that are actually rather wealthy because of it. Not long term wealth but they definitely have quite a lot of money from it.

Then you have maybe 100 or so that make a living wage. Not enough to save up, and there's no retirement plan. But they make enough to get by.

And then you have a million people like you. Just enough views or subscriptions to get a freebie now and then. Or worse, getting paid $10k a year and thinking you're gonna hit it big soon and make real money. But there is no real money. There's a few people that got their first and got big, or people with legitimately interesting and unique things to offer.

You're not one of them. You just want a bite of what they got and will deliver a less popular alternative.

So that's a big section of twitch and youtube. People that think they're going to make it big and who are very, very deluded about the kind of income they're getting. Some of them make alright money, if you consider the wages a fast food worker makes as alright. And like a fast food worker, they have no future and no applicable skills.
