It's time for a Thief thread.

Which was least worst, Maw of Chaos or Soulforge?
>>
I wish we'd see a stealth game like Thief Gold and 2 again. I loved sneaking around in old crypts and castles. Funny enough the closest experience to that for me was an adult module for Neverwinter Nights.
>>
I don't think Soulforge was bad. So I'm going with Maw of Chaos because Thief 1 had far too many fucking missions with forced combat.
>>
>>344452962

Why do people dislike the Maw of Chaos? Yeah I know it was linear but it was honestly a fun as fuck level.

>dat underground river that defied gravity
>falling out of the pool on the roof down through the well top into the river below
>all those floating platforms
>slipper ice and skiiing down slopes

Fun ending level desu I enjoyed it. Also Soulforge was absolutely huge and labrynthine as fuck and I enjoyed that too. I love being able to actually get lost in a game.
>>
>>344453712
>forced combat
le git gud face
I unironically enjoy thief's combat and find it extremely satisfying when I land a killing blow on a guard as he cries for help
>>
Maw of Chaos was linear as hell but still pretty enjoyable. Sabotage at Soulforge has a kickass name but is just an awful mission. The entire gameplay of Thief revolves around sneaking around and needing to be quiet on metal floors so making a map where there's only metal floors is pretty evil.
>>
>>344453253

Play Thief 3 with the Sneaky Upgrade mod pack, includes T3 Gold and the Minimalist project plus a few other smaller mods, makes it a much better experience almost on the level of the first 2 games honestly.
>>
>>344453960

Metal flaws are overrated. I could sprint around most of soulforge. Only if you are getting close to an enemy do you need to slow down, and then again you can just strategically shoot moss arrows to pathways you will traverse often so you can run through there too, and just hope to moss arrow to moss arrow.

You could also cheese it by tapping the forward key but that is kinda cheating.
>>
>>344454230
There's always creeping
>>
Why are there tons of arena shooter games that come out but nobody is making stealth games/Thief clones? The only indie 3D stealth game I can think of (and it might not even ever come out since it hasn't updated in a while) is Tangiers. There's gotta be at least the same amount of stealth fans as arena shooter fans.

There's the Dark Mod but I want something other than just a collection of fan missions.
>>
>>344455639
Even creeping on metal is pretty loud.
>>
>>344455783

Because Thief fans just put all their creativity into fan missions for the most part, or the Dark Mod as you say.

There are still fan misions being released regularly in 2016. Get playing them anon, quite a few exceed the quality of base game missions. People have had a lot of time to get good and creative with Dromed by now.
>>
>>344456146
Yeah I've played quite a few fan missions but I kind of want a new setting too.
>>
>>344455783
What good would a Thief clone be when we already have Thief and TDM? It's not like an arena shooter where other players have to be active.

If I wanted to make a Thief clone, I'd probably end up making FM's cause there's no need to reinvent the wheel.
>>
>you will never live in the comfy T2 Maw of Chaos

>>
>>344456346
Even larger levels, more advanced sound engine, and better AI would be nice in a perfect world.
>>
>>344456346
I don't necessarily want it to copy the setting or anything but have similar gameplay mechanics. And the Dark Mod is the most advanced engine that at the moment people are making fan missions for which is still idtech3 from over a decade ago. There's plenty of room for improvement, both in technical terms (like >>344458070 said) and level design. And having a full fledged story like Thief 1 and 2 would be nice rather than a bunch of separate missions.

I myself have been thinking of a sci-fi stealth game.
>>
PLEASE BE WARNED
>>
>>344458328
Stealth game in a Xeen like world that starts off fantasy and and shifts to sci-fi sneaking in spaceships when?
>>

There was something called Styx that supposedly not terrible.

I don't suppose there's a mod that implements Thief I's jumping physics into Thief II, is there? It was great fun flying around levels in the first game.
>>
>>344458328
I would like a sci fi stealth game where you can't use any of the futuristic tech because it's all tracked, so you have to go up against powerful augmented people with old-world tools.

>Maw of Chaos or Soulforge
>linear hallway with set pieces VS one massive fetch quest
I'd say Maw of Chaos because it was the least shit level in the latter part of Thief TDP
>>
>>344452962
soulforge was great. One of the best levels in the second half of thief 2

the whole series is a fetch quest. you're a thief

>>
>>344460409
Hm, you're right. I actually think the problem I had with it was large open spaces that were almost entirely lit. Still annoying. And still quite a bit of metal iirc even if it's not most of the level. Though I guess it doesn't matter too much with stealth since every enemy on the level are robots and Droopy already know's you're there.

Maybe if I'm really familiar with a level.
Thief's maps are huge, even by today's standards and stealthy gameplay is slow going.
I may not have time to finish a level in one sitting.
>>
>>344460827
I think the worst room in the level is the big room full of smelters and shit that you have to sneak all the way across.
Or the turret room, but that one's not full of metal flooring.
>>

Soulforge senpai.

From what I saw of the game he plays the only character who isn't annoying. Which is good, because you team up with him against the others. Not Thieflike in any way.

Vigilance is our shield, that protects us from our squalid past. Knowledge is our weapon, with which we carve a path to an enlightened future.

Actually, kind of. He plays a rogue AI trying to steal the game from its creators.

Calendra's Cistern if you haven't. It gets kind of obtuse at certain points but it's pretty great.

Didn't really like Calendra's Legacy though.

Already played it, currently waiting for it to exit my memory so I can play it again. Really fun mission but the ai seemed glitchy and that """puzzle""" with the blue lights was shit.

It's more the texture and overall style of the skeletons that are ugly while their other games have a nice visual look to them like Thief. The environments look nice though and they seem commited to the LGS style of game where you get multiple ways to tackle an objective.

Gold's new content was kinda shit now that I think about it desu.

I liked all three new gold missions and the revamped original missions.

I wish Angelwatch was as great as the city around it.

Song of the Caverns is the best level in the series, the others aren't nearly as good. That said, Thieves Guild is perhaps the only level that becomes more fun when you play it a second time with the layout memorized.

You will have to on some of those missions. You will most likely get stuck in the lost city for hours if you don't remember the entrance.
>>
Thief 4 was ok..
>>
>>344475202
2/10 as a thief game
6/10 as a modern "stealth" game

If they just appealed to casuals it might have been some fun, but they failed to do even that.
>>
>>344475202
no
>>
>>344452962
Maw of Chaos was linear but decent compared to the backtracking to make the item in Sabotage at Soulforge.
>>
>>344475202
>>344475342
Nah it was bad. Way too linear and not enough control over your character. 6/10 is still too high in my opinion.
>>
I swear I was the only person who preferred the mansion levels. The pinnacle of Thief for me was literally sneaking around people's properties and robbing their shit. The supernatural stuff was secondary and a little boring for me.

I'd prefer it if I could just rob mansions for the entire game.
>>
>>344475926
The supernatural levels are what sets the game apart for me. I love the fact that Thief is basically a D&D campaign where you solo it as a thief.
>>
>>344475926
That's the usual opinion. It's only on /v/ and ttlg that I ever see people say they like the spooks.
>>
>>344475202
Dishonored was better.

This is completely inaccurate, though. They removed the XP, and combat, let alone takedowns, are discouraged by the challenges they present you with.
