Alright /v/ Persona 3 or Persona 4Will Persona 5 top both of them?

I prefer Persona 3 personally. Although Persona 4 has a comfier atmosphere and more refined gameplay mechanics, Persona 3 has way better characters and music to me. The comparison I always end up making is the difference between Junpei and Yosuke. Junpei is a bit of an asshole at first, but over time grows to trust and respect you after learning not only what everyone is up against but where you stand in it all. Yosuke on the other hand completely defers to you, trusts you 100% from the start, and basically is there to praise and call you partner 24/7. Persona 3 is rough in some areas but overall better written and has more depth but it takes a bit to see it. Persona 4 is flashy and nice on the surface, but the more you get into it the more you realize it's pretty simplistic and tries way too hard to ride the player's dick.
And I genuinely hope P5 tops both. That'd be fantastic. With everything we've seen so far it's shaping up to do just that.

Direct commands doesn't immediately make the game better, the amount of stuff that was done to simplify P4 was enough to make the gameplay dull and uninteresting.
At least P3 tried to keep the variety and playstyle options open, In P4 it's the same boring shit every dungeon.

They're both pretty goddamn awful, but Persona 4 was slightly less awful.
I prefer 4 personally, but they both accomplish what they set out to do quite well, both have their flaws but they are outweighed by their pros, and I would say it's a purely subjective matter of which is better.
I'm sure P5 will be great and it will probably come to be many people's favorite Persona. That said, I think P3 will remain the favorite for those who currently have it as their favorite. It's presumptuous to say, but I've always gotten the impression that the real diehard fans of P3 all played it in high school when it was a very relateable experience and nothing will ever match it for them because they enjoyed it nit only because it's a good game, but becauee of the time they played it in. I'm sure that's not the case for all of them, but I think it is the case for many and I don't think any Persona game will ever match P3 for them.

I like the main cast of P3 better. I also like the music, plot and pacing a lot better.
In P3 you had the timer which was always there in the corner, reminding you of your next inevitable Full Moon battle. There was no getting around it.
In p4 they up the stakes and take characters hostage, but they don't force you to rescue them immediately. You get like an entire in-game week to just meander around folding cranes and shit, there is zero urgency.
If P3P had the anime cutscenes for both genders I would say it is the perfect Persona game. You get the writing and cast of P3 with the gameplay improvements from P4.

Persona 4. Persona 3 FES, even disregarding its same bland dungeon design and bad AI (fuck off Tactics faggots, it's still broken), has a pretty boring cast playing against melodramatic twists and long bouts of absolutely nothing happening. Say what you want about Persona 4, but Persona 3 suffered the same problems when it came to story and characters, perhaps to an even worse degree. It was just as much a "cliche anime game" as P4 was, but the fact that P3's fans purport their game to be something different are deluding themselves. P4 was fun melodramatic toss, P3 was just melodramatic toss.

The entire game is based around its lighthearted tone, and that was something that was set in stone as early as Chie's design, and it's that tone alongside the murder mystery that makes it feel like Scooby-Doo.It also probably comes from the influence of Diamond is Unbreakable which would have come into play very early in development. I only spoiler this because people get mad whenever JoJo is mentioned in a Persona thread even though ATLUS has said before that Persona is influenced by JoJo.

I thought I had the image from the artbook where this is talked about, but I can't seem to find it, but Chie was one if the earliest designs in the game and almost every other design was based around hers. Considering how rushed P4 ws and how Chie was one if the earliest designs, I'd say it's safe to assume that those early designs which were quite dark were very quickly turned away and changed to suit the tone which would have then been decided from Chie's design.

Having direct commands doesn't inherently make it have better gameplay. Look at P3P, the game is too easy since it wasn't adjusted to have direct commands enabled
