Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.
Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

No, it just cleans up a lot of bugs, adds some new textures, changes some sounds (unfortunately it changes the amazing PDA notification sound, but you can fix this), and makes the game easier (because the humanoid AI can no longer snipe you in the head with rocket launchers a mile away).

you DON'T want to use Complete mods, and you don't want to drive vehicles in STALKER. The maps are way too small and filled with obstacles, physical and anomaly flavor, to make them enjoyable, not to mention their physics always go nuts in the mods, shooting you sky high.
patched vanilla is good and balanced, and already proven to offer way higher challenge to many rookies than they anticipated. You can use ZRP mod for some extra fixes + Shaders Max for a small face lift, but in general, the games look and play good.

STALKER really is a thinking man's shooter. Ramboing and treating it like a typical, modern, console-shooter will only get you killed. The first mission at the Car Park is pretty much this legendary "baptism of fire" stage, and ironically only a "tutorial" mission for literal rookies.
tl;dr: Git gud!
Use cover, stay low, aim with sights, remember that there's no hit-scan guns in STALKER, and observe before making moves.

STALKER is a very atmospheric, unique and beautiful game, that has entertained me for almost a decade now. No other art form has managed to do the same, and neither has too many other games done the same either.

I got it recently, freeplay mod that puts all the maps from the 3 games together, also seems to come with atmosfear by default, you choose one out of the 9 factions and do whatever you want, generally taking jobs from NPCs to get cash
My only concerns with it are that it seems to be more unstable than each standalone game and I don't recall shit being so expensive at the traders
