Just got my hands on Arkham Knight and holy fuck this is a great game. I haven't been this atmospherically engaged in a game since Bioshock back in 2007.
Yeah sure they completely fucked up the PC launch, but on PS4 the game is beyond stunning. The level design is the best i've ever seen it, and graphically it's the best looking game out there. Such a shame the game was ignored because of the butthurt PCers who got jewed out.

The missions are repetitive, almost filler in a collectaton.

And btw my Arkham Knight copy on steam runs at 60 fps. So no, the game is not beyond stunning in ps4.

The other two games were nearing overkill with some of the detective vision stuff. This one added in the car combat and car puzzle solving on top of constant DV and it crossed the line into too much bullshit.
I don't know how the car combat sections even got into the game. The tank sections. They were awful.

This game was such a huge disappointment, even without the PC disaster, I am a guy that knows little about the batman universe and I figured out who the main villain is in the first encounter with him, too much batmobile shit, shit story in general,etc.
This game had such a great potential to bring the lovechild of Bane and Deathstroke into the table, have a badass last fight for the Bat, what a shame.
Though the music, NEON LIGHTS and dialogues between brucie and his true best friend are damn good.

There were some cool changes to the combat made, and more playable characters is always nice, but it was designed from the ground up as a DLC cash cow and the Batmobile was too boring and underdeveloped to eat up half the game like it does. It doesn't break up the repetition, it's just a different and worse form of repitition. At least when I'm clearing a room as Batman I'm given multiple different ways to achieve my gold. I can choke them out, lure them to a generator and shock them, blow them up through a weak wall, inverted grab them, knock them off a ledge with a batarang, etc. There's no way to handle the tank/racing sections your own way, they're the same every single time.

There are a lot of things I like about it and a lot of things I hate about it
- Graphics are great
- City is big and believable
- Classic Batman villains
- Driving the Batmobile through the city and smashing shit is fun
- It's fun to fly around with the cape and grapple hook
but god damn fuck them for all of the stupid fucking tank combat segments, the stupid batmobile boss segment. Absolutely horrific shit that would have been fine once or twice, not the dozens of times you're forced to do it.

Objectively wrong.
The gameplay is better than Arkham City but the campaign is much worse because of the Batmobile.
It's not that it's overused, but that it's boring and stale, you always do the same thing with it, they should have had more high speed chases and less tank combat.
Also lack of bosses severely hurt it. It seriously looked like they ran out of villains to use, when in reality there were plenty left.
Granted the campaign is the longest of the 4 games and took me longer to complete, which was nice.Glad i played it for free by borrowing it from a friend tho

Last gen really fucked with the PC market in terms of graphical capabilities. Companies got away with making shit tier PC ports because consoles were using 2005 technology for 8 years. Now the gens are being shortened down to 3-4 years it'll give more breathing room for new hardware components. Once Neo & Scorpio come out the gap between PC & consoles will be extremely thin.
I liked the Batmobile, but they made it way, WAY too integral to the gameplay. If they had shown a bit of restraint with the Batmobile and threw in some City-esque boss fights, it'd be the best Arkham game hands down. Instead, it's tied for best with City, which I still can't really complain too much about.
Oh, but also the bonus ending for 100% completion was not worth the effort by a long shot. My jimjams were a bit rustled.

I had 2 problems, the tankmobile and the Arkham Knight's identity being really obvious.
If the tank-mode of the Batmobile was removed, and it wasn't forced so much, the game would be much better. Agreed OP. The presentation and gameplay variety is undeniable. Especially for a AAA game which is rare nowadays.
I was never bored with it and managed to Platinum it a few weeks after launch (granted I love Rocksteady's Arkham games). Overall it's my favorite current-gen game after Bloodborne.
Oh and the fact that there's no loading screens is really fucking impressive. I don't think any other open-world game is more seamless than Knight 2bh.

Anyway, I think each game holds well enough on its own for being a self-contained story. All the important plot details are reviewed early enough in the game so you don't have to play them to understand what happens.
I still recommend giving Arkham Asylum and City a a go, though. Origins is a mixed bag.

There was way too much tank Batmobile stuff, unfortunately.
And I do mean specifically the tank stuff, not the high speed Batmobile chases. Running down the APC commanders while dodging rocket fire and slamming humvees off the road was great fun.
But the drone fights were pure anti-fun, garbage shit. The problem was that you did so much damage to them and they did so little damage to you, as well as how easy it was to dodge/negate every attack they threw at you. You could sleepwalk your way through tank battles and as a result they were just the most boring sections of the game, and you had to do them ALL THE TIME.
The rest of the game was genuinely enjoyable (aside from the massive focus on Joker again, as well as the embarrassingly bad Joker blood mutation plot point), but all the tank shit really took an 8/10 game and dragged it down to a 6/10.
A regrettable way to end an otherwise solid series, really.

Knight is easily my favorite of the series. The Batmobile stuff isn't as extensive as people make it out to be but it is a big chunk of the game so I get why people don't like the game if the Batmobile stuff doesn't appeal.
For me though, it has the best mixture of atmosphere, gameplay, open world, great sidequests and of course the game is fucking gorgeous.
I personally found myself really worn out on City by the 3/4 point but never felt that way with Knight. The world was a lot less engaging for me in City and the open world aspect felt really arbitrary. In Knight it feels fully realized and like it genuinely improves the game.

I guess for me it was that the sidequests felt like they had meaning behind them. You were apprehending criminals, saving lives, etc. I felt like the quests in City were just as repetative or worse and had absolutely awful payoff and felt pointless in the context of the story.
With Knight being Batman's final chapter, removing as many threats from the streets before the end was important and had weight.And Freeeze's end was depressing as fuck.
