Games with zero replay value.

How the hell did this get 5 stars, game of the year?
>>
>>341813859
I agree, I stopped playing once I realised there was no action or real gameplay at all, just listening to fucking tapes and picking up shit.
>>
I thought it was a clever twist in thinking it was a horror game turning out not to be. Though, I played the game knowing nothing about it. I was sure it was going to be spooky at first.

What I don't like is how it has been turned into a symbol by both cis-shaming SJWs and gatekeeping gamers. A character in the story being gay doesn't mean Gone Home is the greatest story ever told. Only walking around and reading shit doesn't make it the worst non-game ever made.
>>
>>341813859
Because there was lesbians and "feels" in it.

There's nothing wrong with making a "game" that's really just an interactive movie, as long as you aren't trying to pass it off as anything but. And to their credit, they weren't. It's an artsy-fartsy little piece that could have just as easily ended up an indie short film, but instead became a game.

And it's not terrible - the environment is passable, the objects have some nice details, etc. But it's not very good either, certainly not 5 stars my any metric.

the actual story itself is just so fucking boring. It doesn't matter that it's about lesbians, that's not the issue, it's just bland and generic, with the "happy ending" being that two teens are eloping together, with no plans, one of them abandoning her long-held dream of being in the military. and we're supposed to feel a sense of closure because of this? fuck that.

I was more interested in the father's writing career, or the spoopy ghost that failed to materialized.

if it hadn't been plucked from obscurity and paraded around, it would've just been utterly forgotten by everyone, /v/ included. There's nothing offensive in here, nothing "ruining gaming", just a boring little short-ass game that people got all worked up about. Even the devs admit the game's nothing special and they weren't trying to push social anything, they just wrote a story.
>>
>>341814027
IMO It's not so much the lack of gameplay, but more the story that seems like it was written by a teenage girl or some beta male.
If the game was just exploring, it'd be a tiny bit less mediocre.

well-put. I played it because it's free on PS+ and was just like "huh, that's all it was?" why the fuck did anybody make a big deal out of this, on either side?

Couldn't agree more. When it was over I was literally expecting that now the actual game would start.

It felt like an intro/tutorial.
>>
>>341815795
I'm not sure how that relates to the topic at hand, but CS is legitimately my favorite game I've played all year.
>>
It's free with PlayStation Plus.
Is it worth a play through?

The music was the worst thing about this game, hands-down.
>>

They were 100% trying to push a social message. It's politics is the reason this game became an indie darling.

>>
Gone Home has replayability though, its got a commentary mode.

Not too sure why everyone is all spergy about it, there's not anything offensive about the game in the slightest.
>>
>>341818443
I mean, every story has a message of some sort. And if it's a story about social norms, then it's gonna be a social message.

But my point is, it's not like the developers set out to write the citizen cane of gay gaming and become a beacon of lesbianism and queer-love to prove to the world that games can be about homos, too. they just wrote a dumb story about carpet-munchers.

It's absolutely the gaming media's fault for blowing it up, because they absolutely wanted to push the game and score points by praising it. That's where the blame lies; the game itself is harmless.

>>
>>341814585
I remember reading some review of the game written by a christian woman. She was adamant that the high review scores for the game were politically motivated, as the plot of the game is just a romance that we've all heard before, except it's between two girls instead of a girl and guy.

Its offensive in the fact that gaming journalism sold it as the second coming of jesus christ.

>story that doesn't appeal to everyone given its topic

>>
>>341819476
Not entirely sure why people enjoying a game is offensive though. But then i don't really think there's any merit to arguing whether or not something is a game so maybe the whole argument about this game is lost on me.
>>
I dunno. I mean everyone focuses on the lesbian thing but if Lonnie had been a guy it still would've been a nice little experience. Better than Her Story by a country mile at any rate.
>>
>>341819752
It seems like a cheap, modernized romeo and juilet with current trends and a happy ending.

Teenage angst portrayed as anything other then confusion and ignorance bothers me.

>How the hell did this get 5 stars, game of the year?

Corruption and favouritism. The developer was personal friends with reviewer. This is a fact.

Even the reviewer who liked it and this sort of thing ( point-and-click narrative games, lesbians, the 90s, shaggy ghost stories ) weren't giving it any higher than 7/10 initially. Saying it was a well narrative that was ridiculously overpriced.

But no one really remembers those few weeks now. It's even the best thing since gluten free bread or the antichrist of games and not in a cool way.
>>
>>341820510
It's not really like Romeo and Juliet at all.
>>
>>341820658
Is it just me or this pic is so blurry the text is unreadable?
>>
>>341820510
I wouldn't really call it Romeo and Juliet outside of it being a story about 2 people falling in love. I'd also say a lot of how the characters represent their feelings in the writing and voice acting portrays some confusion as well. Neither party seemed super confident about their decisions until the very end. Cliched, sure, but it felt fairly genuine in the end.

>>341820513
His implication is that it getting high scores is why its offensive. It got high scores because people enjoyed it. So yeah, he kind of is.

While enough people shit on him here, Total Biscuit made a really good point about game reviewers in one of his videos.
They just don't like playing video games that much anymore. 90% of them only have the job because they're half retarded kids who wanted to become real journalists but cant write for shit, so they took up what seemed to be an easy job of playing games and writing about them. What they didn't know is that they actually don't like video games THAT much, and after having to play 15-20 hour games day in and day out, they get tired of this shit.
Then Gone Home comes out, with a 2 hour long max story, gameplay that you can completely turn your brain off too, and a story that panders right to their low IQ sjw mindset, it was a perfect match for so many of them. All it needed was a good kickstart by one of the game devs being friends with reviewers to get the first couple of reviews out.
So really, blame the shitty tech kids circle jerk in san fran. Where the devs and most game reviewers are located nowadays.

As fun as it is to rag on game journalists (and it is), doing any hobby as a job does altar your taste.

The reason why most movie critics are love anything foreign or offbeat yet despise genre flicks like Summer blockbusters and ron com with a passion, isn't because isn't that 'they're hate games', but rather a result of having to watch the same types of movies, day in day out.

Its why all the superhero movies are getting shit on by critics but still bring in billions. They're out of touch with the average consumer.

btw the best movie reviewer I ever watch is some guy on my local 24/7 news channel who talks about new movies 2 or 3 times a week. Dude is chill as fuck and is great at recommending films.

It'd be like if a college film student's horribly cliched experimental film got 10/10's from many movie reviewing outlets. The backlash would be the same.
People have to make it clear that they hate it because reviewers are telling creators in the medium that this is what the ideal should be. The hatred for Gone Home is so loud because people feel like they're being misrepresented by the reviewers whose sole purpose SHOULD be to aid the consumer.

Actually now that I think about it *any game* which 'subverts expectation of the medium' seems to get a free pass actually.

I can't help but think critics light gone home the same way that /v/ liked Spec Ops The Line. Which hurts to say.

One of the writers and artists for Gone Home used to play WoW on the same server I did, we never really knew each other but we did a lot of role-play in more or less the same social circles. They would RP, put out great art - even wound up doing a lot of really cool spooky comics that were always very well drawn and interesting and awesome.

Knowing that she was heavily involved in Gone Home made me pretty excited, I thought it was going to be spooky, I thought there'd be a great story. I don't mind walking around exploring things, I don't mind games without combat features or complex interfaces. I don't ask for a lot, just a good story, something to draw me in.

> mfw the story was boring, the twist was 'gay' and there wasn't a single horror element in the whole thing
