It's completely playable for a F2P person, I'm caught up with all the story, I could be around the 20s to 30s in tier 10 of the Coliseum if I could be bothered, and I have a couple of the paid clothes without spending a single dime. In Kingdom Hearts 3 Aqua's goal is to turn back time all the way to BBS, or Unchained so she can stop all the bullshit. She uses this good intention to get Sora, and crew on her side. In reality though she just wants to keep her friends, and cares about nothing else. We learn this half way through, and have to stop her at all costs. During the final battle she gives a speech asking Sora if he ever wanted to change how things went for him, and how she has the power to do that. Sora thinks of how he could be back on the Island with Riku, and Kari. He almost does it, but the power of friendship, and being reminding how he would never have met his current friends across all worlds changes his mind. He gives a lesson speech to Aqua about how you have to make the best of what you have, and everything happens for a reason, and not to dwell on the past. Aqua still in nostalgia, and anger doesn't believe him and falls to the darkness. She attacks. Her death dialogue

In her final words Aqua gets flashbacks, and tells Sora he was right, and not make the same mistake she did. As she's fading out she see's Terra and Ven welcoming her into the Light.

While I vaguely agree, a problem since KH2 first came out has been how little sense the whole "have no real hearts and emotions" thing actually played out with the human Nobodies. It never made much sense, and ended up making the story feel like "it's totally okay to kill these fucks because they're not REAL," even though it never needed that excuse to off them anyway.
It being revealed that they can slowly recreate a heart by FEELING enough helps get around that makes their existence more tragic in a way. The thing they wanted was within their grasp, but it required doing the sorts of things that weren't "act like a total asshole and just farm mobs endlessly." It didn't require anything but being a person to each other.
