There are some amazing side quests in this game. You described the Contracts which are nothing but optional minigames.

I'm loving the game, but jesus christ i'm getting tired of doing favors to do favors to do other favors to find Ciri.

They are sidequests. Playing a semantic switcheroo to try and hide it is fanboyism at its worst. ALL side quests are optional by definition not sure how that it any way justifies the fact that The Witcher 3 is full to the brim with copypasted filler garbage while its fans croon about how everything is so unique and handcrafted

Yeah, they pad the mainquest like crazy. Geralt even jokes about it at one point, he talks about how silly it is that he has to help one guy to find another guy that he must help so maybe he could tell where a third guy is who might know where Ciri is.

Maybe because it happens at least ONCE per each book? And when they were short stories, you can count on one hand those where Geralt is NOT getting shit for being a witcher in inn or place like that.
Hell, the very first witcher story opens with this.

So what's your problem? That it's part of the franchise? A standard element of the setting?

Besides the fact that they could have stopped after Novigrad and gotten away with Skellige and Kaer Moren as DLC and it would still be a more expansive game than most of the competition. For fucks sake they charge 14,99 for a DLC which by todays market standards should be a stand-alone game.

Baldurs Gate. Or you know, any game where you CHOOSE the role you play. A game with a defined role is not an RPG by definition, only a game with RPG elements
>>
>>341459917
OK those are half of sidequests. 2/3 of which also have rich backstory.

Now let's take every Bethesda open world RPG quest:

>Kill/Find that/this in this location on the other side of the world.
>Yes/No
>Accept Quest
>After 4 hours of pressing W you arrive to destination
Bonus points to Skyrim: It's exactly the same dungeon but with different name and slight changes to corridor positions.
>Kill anything that moves with 2 Swords since everything else sucks ass.
>head back to collect worthless currency.

>>
>>341468782
>Or you know, any game where you CHOOSE the role you play
You can't win, these braindead fanboys think making mundane dialogue choices is exactly what you're describing and makes or breaks the genre. The idea that you can choose the role you play outside of dialogue choices is completely foreign to them, any game with EXP/progression system, crafting and dialogue is an RPG.

>they know it's a monster because redania isn't in the area and literally no one else is stupid enough to attack nilfgaard
>go to the town where the patrol disappeared
>full of ghouls and shit
>but actually there are some townspeople hanging around
>they're acting really fucking shady
>find out that their town sits on top of an old elven ruin that the folk have been mining out to sell trinkets for years
>nilfgaardians tried to horn in on the action
>but they dug too deep and too greedily and woke up an ancient vampire which killed fucking everyone and retreated back into the caves to feast on the corpses

Literally my last two witcher contracts. I forgot how cool some of this shit was because I had spent the last twenty hours just doing sidequests in Novigrad. Sure it's not very RPG-ish, but I feel like a fucking badass monster slayer.
>>
>>341468782
No. cRPGs are called RPGs because they borrowed mechanics from pen and paper RPGs, which were the actual role playing games. Don't trick yourself into believing you're actually playing the role of your [CHARACTER NAME] the [CHARACTER CLASS] any more than you do with any other game.
>>
>>341469680

That was my point, to these idiots anything with those light RPG elements is a full-blown RPG because modern WRPGs have strayed so far from what an actual RPG is. Fucking Skyrim and Fallout 4 give you more room to role-play than Witcher 3 does and absolutely no one here pretends those are good RPGs. I just don't fucking get it, Witcher 3 is an action/adventure game with RPG elements (and poor ones at that) yet is hailed as the pinnacle of modern WRPGs.

What is there to roleplay in Skyrim? Haven't played Fallout 4 so I can't know. But as far as I remember Skyrim's quests don't offer you a lot of choices, they're literally "go to this draugr dungeon and fetch this item for me" even the main quest. You can't roleplay as a knight because people treat you the same way as they would treat a thief or a mage. You can enter the College of Winterhold and become the headmaster after a couple quests even if you're playing as a thief.

Granted, that is for the contracts.
With the generic sidequests you have
>Help random guy (guy 2 dies)
>Help random other guy (find out guy 1 is monster, kill him)
Then there are very few story relevant sidequests which determine who will help you at some point
At the end of the quests you have one of two options

By hard lock I mean that Geralt sometimes changes the opponent depending on where the camera is.

Lock-on system basically has two factors - camera, and the direction Geralt is facing. Most of the light attacks move him around so fucking much that lock-on system doesn't work, especially if the lock is so hard that it's impossible to unlock without pressing a coresponding button, faggot.

It's not every Witcher side-quest but you're more or less right about a good portion, if not a majority of the actual witcher contracts.

The thing is, I don't think I'd know how, supposing I was a creative lead on the game, to make them any better. The very principle of the witcher contract is that it is Geralt's bread and butter, his daily grind.

The points of interest are horrible too. They shouldn't be marked in the quest log, they should just be, by default, unmarked both on the map and not log themselves in your quest log. Just treat them as random ruined buildings you can find (or not find) interesting shit in.

Hidden treasure is by far the worst.

And about repetition. Geralt is a witcher. Tracking down shit and killing it is something he does for living. And fuck me if CDPR didn't try to make contract quests as unique as possible.

it's true, playing it for the first time right now and the "roleplaying" is really weak, it's as bad as fo4s "roleplaying" and anyone who doesn't see it must be retarded. I expected something as good as FONV but was sorely disappointeed

weak dialogue options that don't change anything, poorly written dialogue choices that don't reflect what you actually end up saying, little to no actual choices that actually change the game, no multiple paths, very linear, options usually boil down to "kill x or spare x", heavy handed ham fisted morality that isn't all too thought out (like the lynch mob quest in velen).

I mean I like the gameplay and atmosphere and am enjoyibg it overall but goddamn stop deluding yourself into thinking it's a good rpg, it's a good action game but hardly an rpg unless you consider fo4 and me3 to be good rpgs.

Not at all. Are you stupid? The outcome for the world is that either a pesta is on the loose and it ends up causing a plague that kills millions. If Keira survived she ends curing a bunch of diseases and Lambert gets a gf. If Baron lives he and his wife have hope for recovery. Otherwise it all ends in sadness.

Game wise you don't see much but there is a choice earlier that actually does get reflected in game. Kill the thugs in the Crossroad Inn and you are refused entry to the Baron and have to find another way. Don't kill them and they let you go in.

This choice is in the first five hours how the fuck did you miss it if you played the game shithead?

Maybe because you don't actually know what you're talking about, and unlike every other fucking game these past 2 gens, watching videos of the game doesn't do it justice?

outcome are the same because you said so.

>game has side quests
>always boils down to the same kind of detective episode stuff
>hundreds of these
>they still manage to make each one different in some way
>normally throw in a few twists

I don't understand what the gripe is. You don't even have to do the contracts. And if you DO do them, they're normally entertaining. of course not every side quest is going to be its own masterpiece, but you gotta give CDPR credit for giving you fun way to kill big baddies instead of just running around and finding them

Of course it is, but it doesn't influence the game as much as combat or movement. Talking to characters isn't a very rich part of the gameplay, it's literally beginning a conversation and moral choices.

>you don't actually know what you're talking about

Maybe you actually lie about the game to use an argument "you haven't played it"? There's no hard lock in The Witcher 3.
>>
even if Jesus himself came down to save mankind, you faggots would find things to complain about
>>
>>341477220
not that guy but the lock on in this game IS retarded, multiple times on death March I've been locked on to an enemy, nearly kill him, and than have the game auto change my target to an enemy with full hp right before I can land a killing blow. it's a shallow way to inflate the games difficulty and it does it every single time.

>I swear I'm not retarded I was just correcting your grammar!
What? You fucking post making fun of how shilling is "bullying" now you're complaining about grammar on fucking /v/?

You are one pathetic stupid son of a bitch. Hope my lack of punctuation sends you running back to your safe space you subhuman mongoloid.

>You're wrong
>YOU LIE!

What was that about paranoia?

>this is every Witcher sidequest

no it isn't
that's either the filler tier quests which are usually accompanied with something to read, to give the quest a little more story than readily apparent, or contracts which satisfy because a player who actually likes the game will have goals to collect ingredients for decoctions, with some monsters being quite rare to find "randomly" you would go after contracts in order to find the monsters. I was always happy to find contracts because it meant I might get to craft a new decoction.

oh sorry man I didn't mean that The Witcher 3 isn't a flawless masterpiece and slavs' greatest contribution to mankind
>>
>>341477393
>There's no hard lock in The Witcher 3
What are you referring to? The 'lock' function that you can bind to a button not good enough for you?
>>
>>341477601
>what was about paranoia

>That's what's wrong with the game
>YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED IT!
>>
>>341476339
That's all wrong.

Maybe read the journal sometime, and play the game more than once to notice the changes. I mean, Velen changes pretty drastically depending on the outcome of Bloody Baron, how didn't you notice this?
>>
>>341460918
That happens once in skellige and the guy your with dies, which leads you to a side quest with the king.
>>
>>341477729
i would say it's a flawed masterpiece

still slavs' greatest contribution to mankind, even though that might not say much
>>
>>341475140
I would gain nothing from that.
I would post valid things like a predefined character (Fallout 4) with next to zero character customization (muh Ciri), shallow stat mechanics (1 point into making 5% more damage, you have 12 slots for passive skills), nearly no dialogue choices, no meaningful progression outside of rigid builds due to only 12 defining slots, streamlined story etc
