It's such a shame, Rifts class system was the most enjoyable shit, it was so fun to make builds in it. But it was the only redeeming feature the game had, doing a zone-wide event for your first time was crazy hype then you realize it's all samey shit, the hidden items you found everywhere were a nice, fun reason to explore, but the zones were boring as all fuck beyond the first ten minutes being there. Also the races were probably one of the worst in any MMO to date, so many people like to copy wow but none of them like to copy the fact most the races were reasonably diverse in it, not just different sized humans.

Beautiful amazing class system absolutely squandered on a waste of an MMO.
>>
>>340849502
The Lore was shit too
At least in WoW there were multiple factions, in Rift every enemy was part of the Dragon shit faction
>>
Any MMO where you can train whatever skill you like due to there being no classes, such as EVE.
>>
>>340850082
The lore was just, eugh, they tried to pull the "bad guys that MIGHT NOT ACTUALLY BE THE BAD GUYS" plot bullshit wow tried, also including such wonderful things as THE DRAGONS and TIME TRAVEL with MAGICAL CRYSTAL STEAMPUNK TECHNOLOGY. I couldn't even get upset at that anymore though, I can't remember the last mmo I played that I could actually make myself give a shit about the story. Spiral knights I guess? If that even counts as an MMO, not really.

The Secret World

I didn't like it. For starters, the abundance of different souls(?) you could have saved effectively removed the concept of specialization because you could have a build for even the most specialized tasks available at a moment's notice. For example, I had single target tanking build, AoE tanking build, magic damage mitigation build, self-healing build, sword+shield PvP build and what have you. The way I see it, there's no specialization if you can be anything, I certainly like having a build I can identify as my own ("My character excels at this particular thing" vs "I'm warrior class"), and I think it's good for the game if players are rewarded for going the extra mile to tailor their talents to fit the challenge at hand instead of having this specialist build available on a whim.

And that brought up another problem: all of these played pretty much the same, and as you dipped into multiple souls, you got a bunch of abilities that were essentially the same ("strike+debuff 1", "strike+debuff 2", "strike+self-buff" and such like) and that would have made combat extremely dull even if it wasn't for the macro system being too powerful in terms of automating ability-usage (and too simple on other areas) such that the gameplay kinda boiled down to pressing the macro.
>>
>>340849278
I seriously can't, saboteur was the shit. Allay akbaring people in pvp was great, too bad the game itself was boring.
>>
>>340850743
>Make a saboteur/bard mixed class
>Playing sick jams with bards neat buff system
>Do your own pyrotechnics
>Strum a finishing attack on your sitar
>Detonate all your satchel charges in one blaze of glory

Probably the most satisfying class I'll ever play in a game.
>>
It had the best support class I have ever played with Bard. So much fun playing songs and buffing/small heals etc.
>>
>>340849278
Only MMORPG I played for a long time or so. Got max level, cool friends. Then I stopped playing for some reason, my end days was just running around map and switching between channels to collect artifacts.

Oh god I miss that game. I heard they nerfed pyro to the floor though ;_;
>>
If an MMORPG includes the concept of class or overall character level it's probably not worth playing
>>
>>340851447
It was such an enjoyable way to go about bard too, you had long lasting buffs, but then a selection of stronger ones that lasted 5-6 seconds each, and each one gave a different colored effect and a slightly different toned strum of your guitar, so you'd actually get a 'rhythym' going while juggling the good buffs, plus all the other instruments and nosies for your other skills and offensive music attacks

I legitimately miss that shit, fuck.
>>
Why is everyone talking like Rift doesn't exist anymore? Is it really that dead?
I just thought about giving it a shot.

So sad with the state of mmo's today. No support classes anymore. "hurr durr buffing is no fun, everyone wants big dick deeps bruh", NO fuck you, I like helping everyone do better, I always roll whatever is needed to help others. I love playing support, not the modern incarnation of healing either, its fucking shit! Its just a dps with green numbers REEEEEEEEEEEE
>>

>But it was the only redeeming feature the game had
You could tank in pvp

Any game that allows me to tank in pvp is a great game
>>
>>340851786
No, but the game is not what it once was. Now all classes can do all roles. Even a warrior can heal now.
>>
>>340851840
There are still some MMOs out there with good support classes. Red Captains and Yellow Minstrels in LotRO can boost their group's damage by insane amounts.
>>
>>340851890
Alright, I didn't even remember that, that definitely counts too.

I actually really dislike class systems like Rift's. I much prefer a small list of distilled options. For instance, I really enjoyed Aion's original 8 classes, because at the core of every class, it's one of 4 things. Tank, Physical DPS, Magical DPS, or Support.

While I'm not sure about Aion's current implementations, when it first launched in NA, the 8 classes were as I perceive it, all you can do with a class.

Templar (Shield Tank) / Gladiator (Brute force tank that dealt pretty good damage)

Assassin (standard rogue type) / Ranger (standard bow user)

Sorcerer (powerful spells and CC) / Spiritmaster (dot-master and pet summoner)

Cleric (standard healer type) / Chanter (buffer/offhealer)

To me, you can take any class from any game and distill its essence into one of these. There may be some cross over with Hybrid classes, say taking a Final Fantasy XIV bard, would be a cross of Ranger and Chanter, but it's still nothing seriously new.
You could take Fire Mages, or Frost Mages, or Destruction Warlocks, or Elemental Shamans, or Balance Druids, and they'd still all fall under different coats of paint over a Sorcerer type character.

I loved the simplicity and the punctuality of that system. Some people like the crazy customization of their class, but whenever I analyze what a job is, I just break it down into "this is a magic dps class"

As someone who absolutely loved GW1, its class system really wasn't that great. Sure, being able to use secondaries to get every skill in the game on a character and build whatever you wanted was nice, but when you got down to it the only thing that really made the classes stand apart were their primary attributes, which diluted the class differences. It was common to see Necromancers, Elementalists, or Mesmers using the monk secondary to heal because whether you had Divine Favor, Soul Reaping, Energy Storage, or Fast Casting while healing didn't make a big difference.
>>
>>340853280
not him, but when there are more classes, people can identify with one unique class that they like and its more unique to them, for example, i like to play fire mage in WoW, its gameplay is fun and i think fire mages are cool, but i dont like to play frost or arcane mages, i dont like the gameplay, i dont think they're cool,
if there was one class that was all 3 of these classes, i wouldnt enjoy it like i did fire mage
customization is never a bad thing because the more gameplay variety the more likely you can find something fun for you
>>
>>340853529
That was some of the coolest shit, when you had thing like IWAY with necromancer primary healers to abuse the dying pets
>>
>>340851890
I really liked the PvP in Rift back when it first came out just because of how shit everyone was in the first days.

I'd literally enter the battleground, and realize that some of my teammates were literally just exploring and talking because they didn't understand the fucking concept.

Ended up having to devote a shitload of time watching the map and ordering people around by name, also played a healer because they couldn't wipe their own asses.

Funnest shit ever though, closest I've ever came to feeling like a tactician, wrangling retards.

And in the end I also got infected by some of their shit, I remember being on this bridge ordering people around in the point capture map, when some guy from the enemy team walked up to me without attacking and started some dramatic speech about how how my faction was too blame for the world's trouble and attacking me once I acknowledged that I would have to kill him for getting in the way of progress.

I trashed that clown, obviously, but even though that situation was so gay, anime, and pointless, it really did a lot for immersion.

I wish I could play with naive asshats again.
>>
>>340854074
>even though that situation was so gay, anime, and pointless, it really did a lot for immersion
That was called "role playing", anon. Many MMOs have the option to play on what is known as a "role playing server". Perhaps you were on one of these mystical RP-PvE or RP-PvP servers.
>>
>>340853573
What do you prefer about fire mage to other casters?

is it the overwhelming RNG or the fact that you're visually chucking giant fireballs rather than chucking lots of tiny frostbolts?

Design like WoW's approach, with, what 34 "classes" now? leads to perception that one class to fulfill each certain role is "better", shunning players of suboptimal specs. When I briefly played arena this expansion, there were, i think, 4 fire mages on the leaderboards.

just food for thought. I can appreciate WoW's class design. I just have a preference for a simpler system.
>>
But the class system was shitty. It's just the typical illusion of the player having nearly infinite choices for his class but in practice there was really just 1-2 good combos for every class that actually not useless.
So unless you wanted to play a really useless class the game did not offer more classes/choices at all.

>>
>>340854213
No, I was on a bog standard PvP server in a battleground.

Even if I was on a RP server, I've never hit on the concept that it's OK to goof off during a battleground when your team's victory is on the line, even if it is weirdly fun.

Nobody ever pulled that shit in World of Warcraft at least.

Rift had a great class system, it's shame it was stuck in such a derivative, mediocre MMO. The game blatantly copied so many things from WoW, I'm surprised it wasn't made by a chinese dev.
>>
>>340855163
Is this even worth looking at? I played Cabal 1 and enjoyed it but from what little I saw of 2 it looks like they took it in a completely regressive direction.

>The term "Hobson's choice" is often misused to mean a false illusion of choice, but it is not a choice between two equivalent options, which is a Morton's fork, nor is it a choice between two undesirable options, which is a dilemma. Hobson's choice is one between something or nothing.

>>
>>340856540

vindictus seems a little less promising, with lower graphics and seems like lousier gameplay
and DFO seems like a good game but too old for me

I'll probably try Tera
>>
>>340856960
I shit you not, if you are new to MMORPGs try out GW2.
>>
>>340856960
FFXIV is the best traditional MMO out there.

Tera isn't bad if you're looking for free to play tits and sword slashing, but the endgame is awful.

GW2 is OK. I have 3 level 80s but you need to be very self motivated at max level to do anything.

Vindictus is terrible.

DFO isn't awful.
>>
>>340857506
>>FFXIV is the best traditional MMO out there.
Enjoy your 2.5s GCD.
>>
>>340857598
When you clear savage content come back and talk. The game's very hectic as it is. off-GCD abilties already make some classes spammy. It's boring for an MMO veteran at low levels, but once you get all 20+ skills for your job, it'd be very messy with a 1s GCD.

That said, quoted poster is new to MMOs, and a 2.5s GCD is a great way to ease new players in.
>>
>>340856960
Try out GW2. But make sure you get into a good guild with some veterans in it, because the endgame can be a bit confusing for new players.
>>
>>340857598
I haven't once seen anyone who actually plays the game complain about this.
It's really the indicator of shitposters who don't know anything about the game they are trying to bash.
>>
>>340858382
Why the fuck it costs 50$ though? I am just starting the genre so I don't intend to spend so much for it
>>
>>340857598
Pve isn't the only thing going for the game. It has one of the best and active crafting and gathering of any mmo.
>>
>>340858645
Look harder m8, the game is actually f2p.
The new expansion pack "heart of thorns" costs that much, but at the same time the base game got free when they released it.
>>
>>340857806
>>340858425
And how much time do I have to put into the game before I have "actually played it?" I tried it out and played a pugilist for quite a few hours but it was nothing but using the same slow 3-skill combo over and over again. I'm sure, as you said, it gets more tolerable as you get higher in level, but at some point you have to realize "It gets better 50 hours in." is not a good way to advertise your game.
>>
>>340858645
You can play most of the game for free. But if you want to play more hardcore stuff like raids or ranked pvp you'll have to get the expansion, because they added new and more powerful class specs with it.
