after being utterly burned on deception 4, senran kagura estival versus, nights of azure and ar nosurge I've decided that weeb-based JRGs are fucking awful.
Shame, because their artwork is usally fucking amazing, but the gameplay and production value is ALWAYS so goddamn bare bones.

weeb games are designed the same way as their anime, as cheaply as possible. If you want actual quality from a JRPG you either need to wait for squeenix or a western studio to pull it off, because aside from those 2 scenarios JRPGs are made with as little effort as possible because japs don't give 2 fucks about quality as long as their uguu kawaii idol is voicing the prepubescent main character throughout the still images that comprise 95% of the game then they are happy.

Sad to hear you didn't like Ar nosurge. It was actually a really amazing experience if you played Ciel first and then Ar, but a series of bad business decisions (which affected not only english fans but moon ones as well, like releasing Ar before Ciel was even complete) hurt it a bit. The extremely low budget for 3D models and monotonous random encounters didn't help, either, but Tsuchiya is really a great world builder.
Ciel + Ar nosurge is still the best video game experience I've had in the past half-decade or so. It's a shame that it didn't get the treatment it needed to be appreciated more.

Some guy is doing a playthrough translation with videos. It's nice of him, but the real Ciel experience involved playing the game over a year and a half IRL time (due to the periodic releases) and then moving to Ar from that.
But even JP players didn't get the experience as Tsuchiya wanted it, since Ar got pushed for release before Ciel even finished. It was an amazing project botched by awful business decisions.
