Do you guys think GTA could work in a foreign country?

The only complaint people seem to give is that Rockstar wouldn't be able to portray it properly with tropes and all and/or that it wouldn't be popular with an American audience.

But to address two points, how hard can it be to research the pop culture and what not of a country such as Russia or Japan/Korea/China and eventually bring some expats on board in development as to point out what is accurate and what is not?

Also, in regards to the second point, there are both games based around foreign cultures that are a success and there are GTA clones set in places such as Asia already which have been successful.

Pic related is a meme, I'm talking about relevant countries.

There's already a GTA set in London, so yes, stupid, it can work.

The issue with making GTA really work is having writers who are up-to-date with the most current gossip and politics at the time their making the game.
One of the biggest merits GTA is judged on in the series is the writing.

russia would be empty snowy wasteland
sleeping dogs is chinese version

they should just keep doing 'not america' versions
>>
>>339791234
>the most current gossip and politics
Yeah, but don't tell me how ''''deep'''' the social commentary is in GTA games. GTA IV already pulled of a decent portrayal of ex-yu/ex-sov tropes, so how hard would it be to set a game in Russia itself?
>>339791418
>russia would be empty snowy wasteland
Russia doesn't equate with Novosibirsk.
There's also plenty of expats to help with the design where indirect research doesn't cut it.
>>
>>339791559
Well fuck, last line was meant for first reply as well.
>>
No. Foreign countries suck. Nobody knows anything about Bucharest or wants to play in some eastern European shithole. What would it parody in such a place? What would the billboards be? What would the Lazlow radio station be? What iconic landmarks would be lampooned? I don't know and I don't want to know.

There is literally no point in setting a modern GTA game outside the United States.
>>
>>339791647
See the spoilered line, I'm talking about relevant countries(which Russia and some Asian countries are). Plenty of landmarks and pop cultural references could be appealing to Western audiences.
>inb4 Metro and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. hasn't caught in the West BECAUSE of the cultural differences (also Witcher, but that's medieval fantasy, so I'm not making any arguments with it)
>inb4 films like Eastern Promises and RocknRolla weren't well received by Western audiences
>>
>>339791418
>russia would be empty snowy wasteland
Anon, you do know that russia ≠ siberia?
>>
>>339791647
see >>339791234 and >>339791418
Certain non-USA countries can work.
>>
>>339792327
A Russian setting could have nice variety,
>a taiga/snowy rural area for the stereotypical '''Siberia'''
>a pseudo-Moscow for the 'pure' Russian culture
>a pseudo-Petrograd for a blending between Western and Eastern culture
Could also draw inspiration from the Pribaltiki, Caucasus or have a beach area inspired by Odessa/Sevastopol.

If it's not set in America it's immediately going to be less accessible to Americans, their largest playerbase. Also, with a lot of settings, things like guns are a lot less prevalent. GTA wouldn't be very fun if 90% of people, sometimes even the police, were unarmed.
>>
>>339792923
What about Total Overdose?
>>
>>339792923
>If it's not set in America it's immediately going to be less accessible to Americans, their largest playerbase.
Games like Yakuza and Sleeping Dogs were still quite popular, anon.
>GTA wouldn't be very fun if 90% of people, sometimes even the police, were unarmed.
GTA is based on exaggeration, that wouldn't be a problem in any setting.
>>
>>339792858
90's Russia could have a nice bandit story. But seeing how R* are only moving their timeline forward i dont see that happening
>>
England/China/Japan/Russia are the only countries that would work
>>
>>339793089
I didn't say it's not accessible, I said it's less accessible. Sales figures seem to agree with me.
>>
>>339793248
What a stupid ass opinion.
>>
>>339793220
Does it really have to be Rockstar Games though?
>>
H-How about Canada?
>>
>>339793425
Not really, but it should be based on the GTA model imho.
>>339793248
Also South Korea, I think.
>>
>>339793450
Horrible setting. There's nothing to do in Canada that you can't do in the USA.

Also, nobody knows shit about Canada, so any attempt to parody their politics would fall flat on its face.
>>
>>339793248
Mexico too, what with the cartels and all.
>>
>>339793826
Mexico is honestly the only country besides USA I could see working in a GTA game.
>>
>>339793425
Well they're the one who makes GTA. Even if Sleeping Dogs was a good clone it was still lacking.

icenigger here

if they really wanted to portay the great north, half of the map would be trees and ice, and most of the towns would be boring as shit with pedestrians rocking that shitty redneck canadian accent

atleast thats what it's like in alberta
>>
>>339793996
Ontario here.

I'm seriously wondering how they could even make it obvious that a game was in Canada and not the US.

I mean what would they do, add snow and Tim Hortons all over the place? What kind of a game is that?
>>
>>339793450
It's the USA with less ridiculous advertisements while being a bit whinier and less sure of itself/patriotic. Not really worth the time.

Russia, however, fits the bill.

>Ridiculous in it's entierety
>Patriotic as fuck
>Strong national identity
>Plenty of ways to poke fun at it that are new and interesting

A canadian GTA is the same GTA we've had for years. I'm from Wisconsin in the boonies, and I'm basically the fucking same as you guys. What the fuck would they do with a Wisconsin based GTA? Make a few jokes about everyone being drunk?
>>
What about a GTA set in Greenland?
>>
>>339794165
Seeing how canadian political jokes would fly right over amerifats and europoors heads, they'd probably resort to shitty canadian stereotypes for jokes

>Cousin, do u want to go curling, EHH?

>Greater Toronto Area
>GTA

how the fuck is this not already a thing? You got the asian town of Markham, the Brown Town of Brampton, White rednecks, it would be perfect, not even racist story where you could fuck with each established race in the GTA as a refugee from syria stealing shit and raping white chicks from rich towns in the northern GTA.
>>
>>339794459
Pretty much. GTA 3 onwards might as well be a different franchise altogether.
>>
So many first world countries have strict gun laws so it limits the possibilities if you want a game set in the current year. GTA Russia would be interesting.
>>
how about bully 2

I'm banking on the next GTA to be set in Toronto Canada.

Thanks to Drake

Imagine all the possibilities, m8. Caucasian gangs in notMoscow, military base in notSevastopol, missions for a corrupt FSB agent in notTransnistria/notAbkhazia/notOssetia.

It's possible, but I would say that GTA sells well in foreign markets because American stereotypes are well-known (and disliked) throughout the rest of the world.

The same can't be said for the American domestic market, who can barely point at Canada on a map. It seems like a necessary progression at this point, but Rockstar will have to work very hard in order to make the series accessible to the larger American market.
>>
>>339792923
Actually GTA is bigger in EU than it is in America

It's already set in a foreign country.

That shit was awesome i'd really want to play sequel of that game. I bet that like 3 or 4 times.

Grand theft auto will always be done in a Hollywood style and there are good reasons for that.

Grand theft auto tends to romanticize the organized crime culture and makes fun of it at the same time. When you are dealing with organized crime you need to be extra careful in how you portray that in the game.
The flashy settings, the underdog story, humor, pop culture, capitalist values et cetera
There's more to it but you guys get it

see Scarface(1983) the movie for a good example that is basically the foundation for every Grand theft auto video game

>>339793248
So you know nothing about world kid.

In poland in 90s we had pretty big mafias which were dealing with government, and then one of them sold all of them just to became Crown witness so you could make plot easily using that.

In ukraine we now have war vs russians, a lot of corrupted politicans, mafias only getting stronger.

In skandinavian countries they have tons of problems with muslims, they are creating gangs atm.

And probably most intresting of all Kosovo - Everyone want to have gun since nobody argues there they just shot you to death. Tons of people are too scared to leave their homes because they can get killed. Kosovo is also called as "Kingdom of mafias" They could also put a lot of easter eggs since nikko bellic was serbio-bosnian.

Also i almost forget about Venesuela where you can't get any food, toilet paper, meat, etc from shops since ultra-socialist government controls everything, people are too scared to leave their houses at night, you need a bag of money to buy anything. Police/guards are disarmed since government created no-gun zones. And ofc you can get illegal guns really easy. Thugs/mafias stole anything left from existing shops.

I've visited Prishtina, it's quite comfy actually. Also nice big statue of Bill Clinton. )))))

Anyhow, for Poland/Baltics CD Projekt Red could nail a decent game, but I don't think they'd go for such a setting anytime soon.

This has nothing do to with how shitty some countries are and the reality of organized crime there.
