This exactly. Anyone who hates something just because of the people who like it, unless you are forced to interact with those people, has some growing up to do. You don't have to identify yourself by what you like.

Smash 64 didn't really get crazy with most of the characters movesets since it was their first attempt at that style of gameplay. Mario, DK, Link had really basic movesets too.
They just never bothered to update her like they did with Mario and Link in later games, which is a shame.
Blame Smash 64. She hadn't had a game since Super at the time. Melee was the same case, and the disconnect only got worse, by the time Brawl came around she had Ganondorf syndrome- her moveset didn't represent her well, but it had become iconic to her Smash incarnation, so they're loath to change it.
