Literally every Touhou doujin is written with a tenuous grasp of the characters at best. For a long time I think most Touhou doujin artists didn't even play the games, but did nothing but read existing doujin and base their own off of the fanon characterizations that emerged.

Well honestly a lot of romantic content (for Touhou at least) tends to be formulaic as hell.

Personally I think the two have a very good rivals/best friends relationship going on, and having them become a couple tarnishes that. It's better when they're co-protagonists at the center of it all, with all the potential relationships and eventual settling down (with whoever) revolving around them.

I would not call RemixPatch an unpopular ship. Maybe doesn't get as much outright romantic content as others but I still see a fair amount of material.
I also wouldn't describe any pairing as actually canon. I mean come on, I wear the goggles as tight as anyone else and I still think its silly to think there's going to be any actual stuff happening in official works.
Any vibes there might be on occasion can more than likely be written off as done purely on the artist's part, considering how little supervision they seem to get from ZUN considering how many errors they seem to make.

Considering a large number of them have likely lived for centuries, they've probably seen for themselves how marrying for love as a concept is relatively new, historically speaking. Not even mentioning that being a youkai means they've lived outside of society at large, or hidden on the fringes of it at most.
Actually, now that I think about it it wouldn't even make sense for these kinds of marriages to even exist in Gensokyo considering it was sealed off in the 1880s and was pretty remote even before then.

It depends on the type of youkai, I suppose. The more communal sort like the oni, the tengu and the kappa probably have a long tradition of marriage, while others like the fairies would be completely oblivious.
For the former I expect it's not homosexual marriages that are controversial, but those with other youkai. There was that one nice YuuParu doujin the other day about that.

That's another subject I've thought about a fair bit. A lot of the youkai characters probably wouldn't have much reason to give a shit about the idea of getting together with another woman, considering most of a person's notions about that sort of thing are formed by the people around them.

I would say that's still a fair bit more flimsy than most pairs I've seen.
I dunno, its always been hard for me to really like the idea of Cirno being in a proper relationship like that. She seems to better fit the type where she's naive and oblivious to all of the other side's advances, as they struggle to get the point across.

Fairies don't change physically or mentally, the canon is pretty clear about that. Vampires just stay the same physically. Flandre's immaturity is because she was confined alone to a basement for centuries.
Of course you're free to ignore that, but I think the eternal innocence of fairies is an interesting bit of canon that would be a shame to drop just because you want to ship them.
