He's just a kid and he witnessed his parents get eaten by Wildlings. Jon never properly vocalised anything to him, never sat him down and tried to explain his perspective regarding the Wildlings migration.
Olly thought he had joined a brotherhood after he had no family left, and the guy who was supposed to be his role model wanted to help the people who tore his last family apart, and never really explained to him why it was necessary to change their priorities.
And he was still just a kid after all, allowed to make mistakes. No doubt Thorne was very persuasive and told Olly what he wanted to hear.
