Since the mods won't make it, it's up to us. I propose we start /film/ general threads for people who want to discuss movies as an art form. Let's start by figuring out a list of directors and films for beginners trying to expand their horizons and put them in a pastebin. I propose pic related, and his film 8 1/2. Also, Stalker by Tarkovsky.

I think his point is that if lists like that already exist, there's no reason to duplicate them. May as well recommend some lesser recognized films that deserve the exposure. They're included because they're good too, not because they're obscure

Come on. I'm not a Bergman fan, but they're all at least entertaining, even in the most conventional sense.
It's one of the reasons he was so popular, after all.
>>
>>69221512
Bergman and Felini and tarkovsky are heavy hitters and changed the game. They deserve to be talked about. I do object to the fact that discussion of big names like the aforementioned seems to be to the exclusion of other directors. It would be nice if we could have a thread about Franzt Fanon or Thomas Alea for instance but I'll settle for a bergman thread so long as it isn't just memes about the death scene in seventh seal.
>>
Working on the pastebin now. I'm thinking I'll include links to imgurs that have the images in this thread, and then recommend individual directors and three of their best works. How should I sort these? I was thinking of doing entry level, low level, mid level, and high level, but I'm not entirely sure who/what would go where.

I also want to include guys like John Ford, Stanley Kubrick, and Alfred HItchcock for people who are truly clueless.

>>
>>69221725

>>
>>69221725
I agree with the obvious inclusions. As for which films to pick, you could almost make a chart like the "Godzillla Films" chart that has a movie and arrows going out from it, leading to other films based on whether you want "the same serious tone" "better special effects" etc. That way you don't have to limit yourself on number of films per director, or worry about classifying them a certain way, just recommend where to go next based on the viewers personal taste.

I do get though that you may be trying to conserve time, in which case I think it would be best just to decide three or so that are essential not only to getting into film, but getting into the director as well. No need to label them, just list them out.
>>
>>69221778

>>
>>69222117
No, boring means you were bored by it. To critique the film you have to search for the reason. A lack of plot, or "anything happening", does not make a film any less captivating. Perhaps it was poorly paced, or the execution was poor. Simply calling a film boring though says nothing about it's quality, just your perception of it. And honestly, saying nothing more than "its boring" makes it seem like you're unable to figure what exactly is wrong with it, meaning it's your taste at fault, not the movie

How does a movie have textual aspects?
>>
>>69222354
im sorry
>>
>>69222207
No, it means nothing interesting happened in the film.
>>
>>69222364
u can see a lot with yr eyes closed
>>
>>69222251
This doesn't work though becuase there's no message or meaning behind paint drying. The most important thing a movie can do, in my opinion, and this is beyond basic technical and visuals levels of course, is convey a message and do so impactfully. I suppose that's where subjectivity comes into play: did it affect you or not? But as far as boringness goes, that's back on the more technical and objective level. I could see how a movie with no perceived impact/message would be boring though. So I agree with you there
>>
>>69222408
like a woody allen film
either that or he means textural
>>
>>69222476
What would be the message in Brakhage's films?
>>
>>69222476
ok if i made a film of paint drying. u know what i mean bruh bruh?
>>
>>69222496
>>69222408

The textual aspects are only barely mentioned anyway, it's about how the nontextual elements guide the viewer through a film.
>>
>>69222515
Why do you pretend that Brakhage's filmography is monolithic
>>
>>69222580
so french new wave?
>>
>>69222616

Go read about it dude, what do you think you're going to get a comprehensive rundown off a chinese cartoon forum?
>>
>>69222598
Oh it's not. But I don't see how any of his films qualifies with>>69222476 's idea of what a film should do. Hence my question.
>>
>>69222674
idk
>>
>>69222680
I agree with your point. I just get peeved when people act like Brakhage only ever made abstract animation. Movies like the Scenes from Under Childhood have a clear 'message' or more appropriately themes.
>>
I think La Grande Illusion and It's a Wonderful Life are the two greatest films ever made. Can I hang out here?
>>
>>69222764
frank capra is one of the greatest american directors no bs
>>
Is anyone a fan of feminist film theory here? Honestly it annoys me how much the term 'male gaze' is misused and used blatantly out of context recently, by people who probably skim Laura Mulvey's work and then just misinterpret it.
>>
>>69222750
I hear you man. Window Water Baby Moving is my favorite of his, actually.
>>
Vincent Gallo and Harmony Korine are hacks.

And not the enjoyable, Vincent Price, kind of hack either.
>>
>>69222971

Agree, extremely moving film.
>>
>>69222009
Despise this. Absolute trash.

Who /Verhoeven/ here?

I'm getting Demonlover vibes from Elle desu
>>
>>69223075

Like many 80s American auteurs it's a shame he fell off.
>>
>>69223075
Elle is the most promising thing in this year's shitty competition. Really looking forward to it.
>>
>>69223073
Haven't watched any Keaton. Seen all of Chaplin though.

Where do I start with him?
>>
>>69222988
I think Korine is a genius in his own right. I genuinely enjoyed Trash Humpers
>>
>>69223184
sherlock jr is a good place to start imo, the general is his masterpiece.
>>
>>69222515
Sometimes the form is the message. His work is interested in deconstruction of the film medium itself.
>>
>>69223284

>>

His work is interested in light, mainly.
I do agree with your first sentence.
>>
>>69223039
Limelight is the patrician film of his.
>>

That's sad. It was an 8/10 at most.

it is sad cuz it was a flop and p much ruined his career

Rossellini and Truffaut thought otherwise, pleb.

Rossellini? Along with Renoir and Ford, the absolute GOAT

The Mount Rushmore of Cinema is

>Hitchcock

>Tarkovsky

Also, Truffaut and Rossellini made a number of good films. Don't be a fucking pleb.

Here's what I have so far. It's far from finished but I welcome any and all feedback both in structure and content. I also realize there will be some very controversial choices on here but I believe they're important nonetheless. I feel that I'm lacking some non-contemporary English language directors. Any recommendations on that would be excellent as well. Already thinking about Frank Capra, Michael Curtiz, William Wyler, David Lean, and Orson Welles.

I highly disagree with FMJ for Kubrick. I'd put Eyes Wide Shut. And while I'd include Barry Lyndon or Paths of Glory instead of ACO, I understand the necessity of its inclusion.

But for sure Eyes Wide Shut instead of FMJ

Good job, I think a lot of these are very good picks, including both a director's "most important" stuff as well as the films necessary to understand them as a director. I wish there was a way to include The Thin Red Line for Malick, but I'm not sure any of the three you picked could be left out.

I also third the removal of Full Metal Jacket. Not exactly what I would consider essential Kubrick in any sense
>>
Mods should make film. It just needs some hardcore moderation and then all the shitposters will get the idea and return to their shitposting safe haven.
>>
>>69227275
It would honestly work with intense moderation in the beginning. We'd have to relax eventually, memes are important too, but there's a difference between shitposting and fun discussion and creating a sense of zero tolerance for underminers would allow such a place to actually exist
>>
>/film/ will never be
>bleu, mizo, stvn, fugue, greatthanimplying, etc will never come back to save us from got and capeshit

>>69227398
I think it's pretty depressing that there is a dedicated and very large group of shitposters wanted to stop film from being a thing.
