Wasn't this only in the early seasons? I'm pretty sure they realised how dumb this looked and just got a different actor to play young Dex at some point.
Dexter was going off the fucking rails long before those horse shit flashbacks. If's peak was with the Trinity Killer. S4's saving grace was that giant mexican but he wasn't enough to salvage the series. The showrunners just didn't know what the fuck they were doing.
I remember a part where Dexter feigns being dead/injured in a deserted junkyard or some shit because he was being pursued by two people he intended on killing. The two goons tailing him hop of their pick-up truck and close in on the fallen body. They get close and kneel over Dexter in preparation to heft his body up because two people would naturally go for the upperbody, right? Dexter promptly sits up, makes an X with his arms and injects his super secret good night juice into both victim's necks which obviously causes instant paralysis and near-death like symptoms because it's television so why not.
That was when I tuned out. Stupid anime bullshit.
