that didn't go anywhere though. They apparently set it up 20 years ago then never used it.

Cannes sucks cause you really can't see the movies that compete there beforehand. Most movies dream of premiering at cannes, and if they don't get hype there, they mostly go into obscurity. Problem is, like any festival, the cannes jury looks for certain
thing in movies, and good films often fly under the radar.

that being said, this year has some bretty good names in the game.

Donald Sutherland is 80 years old and he's still relevant. What a great career he's had.

>Nicolas Winding Refn

I actually like Mungiu, Puiu, and Assayas. But they have become really boring over the years. I think that Mungiu and Puiu look like very probably winners on paper.
>>
>>68823785

But Mungiu's last movie was his masterpiece and one of the best films of the current decade.
>>
>>68823839
where to start with Mungiu?
only saw one of his short films, the romanian wave kind of padded me by.
>>
>>68823938

he only has 3 full length movies at the moment my man. I'd start with 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days I guess.

The thing is that the program is too obvious in the very middle brow way, and that's boring. The programmers' goal is not even to get the "best" movies in the program, but the most interesting ones.

They got Dumont in the main program now, except last time they put his most interesting movie in years into a second tier program. The programmers are just too slow to stay relevant.

Why is someone like Nadav Lapid who is a phenomenal director and an innovator still in a second tier program this year? While irrelevant old geezers like Penn, Loach, Dardennes, Almodovar etc. are forever locked in the main program.
