Can Gilmore Girls even be called a guilty pleasure?

I think it was genuinely good, at least for the first few seasons.
>>
>>68787086
Are you a teenager girl? If not then yes it's a guilty pleasure.
>>
>>68787086
are you a girl
>>
>>68787086

it's absolutely not a guilty pleasure. the first three seasons anyway. those seasons are pretty brilliantly written and feature a deft blend of emotion and comedy. the show is surprisingly subtle and insightful in its depiction of a mother and daughter and the ways in which the two influence one another as they age together. Lorelai's youthful age adds a poignant component to the show as there is always the sense that she never actually had the chance to grow up and is still learning how to imitate a grown up with a daughter. Also the show's literary/cultural references in general are too patrician to consider the show a guilty pleasure. Any show that cracks jokes about an elementary school adaptation of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is worthwhile in my books. Don't give in to the beta males on this site OP, the first 3 seasons are excellent.
>>
>>68787086
got pissed as fuck when the blonde dude got BTFO when he asked Rory to marry him and go live with him

>>

>>68787176
Nah, but I was like 15 when I first watched it.
>>
>>68787259

Season 7 is completely unwatchable. In fact the show becomes basically worthless post-season 4. Logan is also a piece of shit. Thank fuck Rory left that dirtbag behind.
>>
>>68787271

way to back down OP, you pussy.

if you think it's guilty pleasure material you definitely aren't patrician.

At its best it's on par with Aaron Sorkin.

seasons 4 & 5 are awesome nigga, what the fuck you on about? it doesn't jump the shark until season 6 with that retarded storyline about Luke's daughter
>>
>>68787434

Jess is a criminal, how?

He's clearly the best fit for Rory and the only one of the three who actually gave a shit about the same stuff that she dug. He had some emotional problems, that's about it.

Logan was a douche bag that had no interest in literate.

I wouldn't expect you as a non-reader to understand this though.
>>
>>68787492

I can't agree.

The second half of 4 is great but when I rewatch the show now I always stop there. 5 declines hard and I haven't even attempted to rewatch 6 since the first time I saw it when I was 16.
>>
>>68787399
I'd argue it's better than any series Sorkin could make, the man has serious talent but he's far too preachy and politicized
>>
>>68787535
they literally stole a boat together which lands Rory in jail and starts her path towards the dark (boring, rich kid) side.

If she does end up with Jess in the revival I'll kill myself.

That must occur in season 5. God damn everything post-4 is so retarded.
>>
>>68787570
I just finished rewatching season 5 and it's great. Sure it has Logan who sucks, but the Palladinos were still knocking it out of the park as far as writing and humor.

Season 6 is when they started running out of ideas, and how
>>
>>68787571
I mostly agree but when he's on he's really fucking on. He also has a really wide breadth of knowledge to draw on, even if he does recycle tropes a lot.

Then again Amy Sherman-Palladino has all of Sorkin's good qualities and NONE of his bad ones, so maybe she is superior.

RIP Bunheads. gone too soon xxx

I really think the quality of the writing takes a distinct shift in season 4. The characters change too in ways that aren't at all flattering to their earlier selves. Stuff like Paris complaining about how jealous she is of their thin roommate in season 4 sounds so false and like such a betrayal of the earlier show. 4 is still pretty good but it's noticeably different and I guess I just didn't like the direction the show went. Them having to lamely try to keep Lane in the show also really messed things up a lot. The show could only survive when it was contained in high school/Stars Hollow imo.

I think Paris is always meant to be deceitful and self-serving. She puts down everyone so that shouldn't be a surprise. I really like how crazy she gets with the paper in S5
>>
>>68787688

That's just something that single people say. Having things in common is extremely beneficial for a relationship. And if one person has a passion (like Rory does for books), the other person has to at least have an interest in that subject. Rory's passion (at least in the early seasons) is overriding, taking up a lot of her time, to have someone share in that is an amazing feeling. People with no passion can have relationships where they share little because they generally don't give a fuck what they spend their time doing. That's not the case here.
>>
>>68787086
>single quirky mother and quippy daughter don't need no man: the show

It's shit like this that brought on the cancerous wave of nu-feminism. Fuck that show.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I think season 4 has issues balancing Rory in College with Stars Hollow, but by the end of the season they were able to strike a good balance. Season 5 is noticeably better, and has some of the funniest moments and lines in the entire series.
>>
>>68787573
>>68787618
oops I was talking about Logan stealing the boat. Jess isn't a criminal, just shady.
>>
>>68787792

I mean more that her concern shifts from intellectual things to bullshit like how thin she is and how many guys she can get. The whole show takes a shift from the early seasons when Rory and Paris are obsessed with learning and books into the college years when they seemingly give no fucks about books and just want dates. You can actually see the number of references to culture/books declines hugely in the seasons after 4. The characters stopped caring about what they had loved before and that felt really fake to me.
>>
>>68787895

whatever, you plebs as non-readers can't appreciate the beauty of finding another person who reads. it won't translate to you guys because you see books as chores. most of the people on this board anyway.
>>
>>68787855
Are you retarded? Both of them are desperate for male attention/companionship, and there's no feminist agenda whatsoever. I'm a serious anti-feminist and Gilmore Girls is one of my favorite shows

>>
>>68787968
Now that I think about it there is one, just one scene in GG that had pro-feminist shit which irritated me when I first saw it. It's when Lorelai, Rory and Dean are watching the The Donna Reed Show and they treat Dean like an idiot for not having a problem with the traditional gender roles in it, after he gets annoyed by how much they're riffing the episode.

That's literally it, and afterwards Rory apologizing to him, dresses up like Donna Reed and cooks him dinner. Pure poetry

you're like those idiots who don't think #BlackLivesMatter should exist because #AllLivesMatter

These movements exist to redress an imbalance. Without feminism you wouldn't have equal rights or equal pay. You don't hate feminism, you probably hate third wave meme feminism, which isn't representative of the entire cause because no one movement can be.

Oh, the classic "look it up in the dictionary" argument. As if that means anything

It's obviously exclusionary as it distinctly focuses on women's issues while all but ignoring men's issues. Gynocentrism helps no one, all it does is increase the divide between the sexes and breeds conflict.

feminism reframes the discussion to include females and renegotiate their place within an equal society. That's inclusive.

I wouldn't expect a raging MRA (and if you're against a black rights movement, let's face it, a probably racist) to understand equality anyway.

You thrive on hatred and a position of priveledge and will do anything to withhold the status quo of an unequal society. That's faggotry in its true form.

>>
>>68789291

While I agree with everything you're saying about feminism and I agree that the other guy is a dumbass, I think it's a little naive to think Gilmore Girls is some paragon of openness and inclusiveness. The show never shows any characters that are gay, in fact the concept doesn't even seem as though it exists in Stars Hollow. Also the show privileges fairly classist ideas revolving around Ivy League schools and climbing the social ladder. It's a largely conservative show in its humble small town American locale that doesn't feature any aberrations like sex amongst minors or any form of homosexual relations, let alone any non-whites (the Kims don't count because the show focuses entirely too much on how the family is Korean and gives a relatively racist depiction of a Korean mom)

You faggots do realize that by the end of the series, Jess is the only one still on speaking terms with Rory. He published a book and owns a gallery with his friends. Dean is probably still bagging groceries and Logan fucked every girl in sight the second he though him and Rory were broken up, which its not even clear if he believed that. If you go back and watch he told his sister that they broke up supposedly just to get her off his back but later Logan says that he legitimately thought they were broken up which is why he bangs all those chicks. He either lied to Rory or to his sister.
Dean just ends up bitter as fuck and he talked shit to Luke about his relationship with Lorelai. Logan cheapened their relationship by implying they couldn't do long distance and that it was all-or-nothing. Jess is the only one she might even be willing to sit down with at the end of the show.
>>
>>68787792

>nice guy

>>
>>68789367
You do realize that attitudes about class and the relationship between money and "worth" are pretty heavily featured in the show. Lorelai ran away from home because she knew how shallow a world that is and she finds more personal satisfaction in raising her daughter on her own and spending time with her friends than having an easy life and having everything handed to her. Plus Lorelai and Rory are liberal as fuck, they mock republican and Rory even has a "Stop the War on Choice!" poster in her room at college.
>>
>>68790397
Rory was set up at that weird sausage fest party her grandparents hosted, and she decided to have fun in a bad situation and lost track of time. Dean was fine with it until he saw all the boys. Self cucked like the reactionary idiot he is.
>>
>>68791118
Apparently they are, though if they somehow backtrack Dean's bitterness and make it so he is in love with her again I'll be pissed. Same if Logan all of a sudden thinks that they can make it work. Jess is the only one whose character arc at least leaves him in a place where they're in an ok place and can see each other without it being weird.

It wasn't in the finale. It was in on of the season 5 episodes where Lorelai and Luke are dating and Dean is working construction at the Twickam House and Luke and him butt heads a bit. Luke tells him to get over it and Dean says that his relationship with Lorelai is pointless. Basically he just projects all his feelings about Rory onto Luke and Lorelai and thats the last time we see him in the show.

Not true.

Also, just because that might happen to some people doesn't mean that it would happen in a tv show. Also the show clearly isn't conscious of the shift in character. There is no reason that the characters change into mindless girls that want dates. There's no explicit commentary on the progression the characters go through. Rory just seemingly out of nowhere no longer gives a fuck about the life of the mind and just wants to date boys. That's why she ends up with a cunt like Logan who uses books as just another way of asserting himself.

Anyway, it's shitty that the show devolved in my opinion.
