Budget limitations. It's not GoT, they can't do huge battle sequences with shitloads of props and CGI for extended periods. It's why Rollo's forts looked like cardboard boxes, why the vikings retreated after losing only a few boats, and why during the battle on the river they chose to put all the viking leaders in the same place, show them getting fucked up, and then show them retreating in order to convey the Frankish victory.
One of the reasons the battle sequences were better in the first couple seasons is because they were almost all smallish raiding parties fighting on foot. It's cheaper and simpler to accomplish.

They're virtually unbeatable in hand to hand combat, and only lose when they have to scale huge walls, if they're ambushed, if they're at a huge numerical disadvantage or if they're tricked into doing something stupid.
Yet in this battle, they apparently lost in a melee battle on the sea, which is more or less the viking specialty. Historically speaking, the vikings fought many ship to ship battles.
I don't mind the vikings losing battles, as the show would get stale if they always win, but they could at least try to justify it. For fuck's sake, the purpose of their raid was to take Paris, which means taking a lot of losses before the battle even begins, followed by defeating the entire Frankish army in close combat. Yet in this episode, they were apparently beaten by a medium force of Franks (with enough left behind to defend Paris, as stated in the show), fighting on the vikings' terms. They even showed the vikings winning decisively, but then they suddenly lose.
It's like the entire arc existed to prop up that half-wit Rollo.

The writing in this season is all over the place, no sense of direction and just opening up a lot of arcs with no purpose. Like why the fuck would they make the chinese chick a royalty if it was completely meaningless to the character? It's far fetched enough that a chinese person would end up in northern europe, but the daughter of the emperor no less? Why?
Ecbert part was also really lackluster, randomly taking over mercia and having the only combat scene was a shitty scene in a guard tower with some incompetent female bodyguards, the rest was just settled off screen.
They're trying to set the scene for ragnar dying and his sons taking over after him but they're doing a pisspoor job of it.

This is just so bullshit. ON had some influence on Engish during the OE period, yes, but not that much. English has been most influenced by French, and around 60% of modern English vocabulary originates from French/Latin.
