Because it's assembly line work. There are some illustrators that elevate the material, but mostly its just artists for hire that have deadlines to meet. I do miss hand colored comics though.

No. There were quips for sure but only Han and sometimes Lando would quip. This was fine because that was just Han's character and they were all in tune with the movie.
The recent movie is pretty much a mess where everyone's quipping and having a good time like their lives aren't in danger. It's like the characters themselves know they're in a movie and are constantly winking at the audience. It's annoying as fuck.

The difference between jokes & quipping is that jokes stem from characters, build up & context.
Quipping is just catch-phrases and shit which can be spewed out in reference to just about anything...humor which appeals to the lowest common denominator which may bring a chuckle on first viewing, but don't last.
