There are occasions where a studio decides that there is enough interest to warrant a sequel, but will make serious changes to the cast, director, producer, writers, or just a significantly smaller budget.

I seem to remember Sony saying there would be a spin-off movie with an all male cast. I always saw that as preemptive damage control, if the fembusters fail they can just role out the new new team. Sort of like what they did with Spiderman and The Amazing Spiderman.
Truth be told, I'm kinda hoping that the next Ghostbusters thing they do face plants even harder. That's how sick of reboots I've gotten.
I don't understand why guys still give this movie the attention it doesn't deserve, Someone already mention this movie is just a huge marketing promo for the merchandise and mentioned that the royalty money is what Sony are really after which includes renewing some old films merch and licensing them out again which is kike tier but it's new money, When you look at it further, this is actually not the riskiest venture for Sony.
