Can anyone point me to a similar show that's amazingly good with the same creepy creature vibes?
>>
Fringe, The X Files, Twilight Zone
>>
Hemlock Grove is on Netflix, and way better.
>>
>>72111664
>Hemlock Grove
looks like trash for women

7.2 imdb compared to 9.3 mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
>>
>>72111664
This is a classic 'I'm on /tv/ so I have to be a contrarian and have a really shitty opinion please like me' post. The truth is you'd be be better off on reddit
>>
Watch some Stephen King miniseries'
>>
>>72111664
Like a goddamn horseshoe.
>>
>>72111664
Stranger Things looks like The Sopranos compared to Hemlock Grove. Did you see the reviews that trash got?
>>
>>72111664

No.
>>
>>72111664
>Eli Roth
>Good
>>
>>72111664
This is an embarrassing opinion. Stranger Things is 6/10 at best but Hemlock Grove is one of the worst series I've ever watched.

Jesus I hate you contrarians fucks around here, do you fucking enjoy anything that doesn't involve having your head follow the stick up your ass?
>>
Every 80's horror movie.
>>
>>72111525
>amazingly good

Let's not get carried away. It was okay. I've seen episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark that were better. It's just that we're all desperate for something halfway decent in the sewage system that is modern film.
>>
>>72111525
Twin Peaks

>>72111664
I disagree, at least Stranger Things had a Gonnies appeal going for it.
>>
>>72111664
i guarantee this is a chick, and she loved twilight and all those other shows with supernatural love stories
>>
>>72112974
>Are You Afraid of the Dark that were better

>talks about not getting carried away
>gets carried away

Way to invalidate yourself
>>
>>72112974
I can agree with that to a point, but the series wanted to flesh out it's characters a bit more than just focus on the three boys and girl. Had those side characters been removed, this thing probably could've been a feature length film. However, because it did choose to be fleshed out, I wanted more explanation about the girl and the monster.

Most people like this show because of the 80s nostalgia. There's no surprise it's getting good reviews just because of that and i believe it did portray the decade well enough. This show has scenes in it that remind you of E.T, The Goonies, and other films of the 80s with kids in them, but I think this one has enough original stuff to stand on its own.

Winona Ryder had the best performance, as expected since most of the cast has only been in only a few other things. It has a good musical score, set designs, character development, and ok special effects for a tv series.

I think it's a solid 7/10
>>
>>72111664
>See hemlock grove on netflix
>Famke Dansen
>Spooky force in small town
>Advertised as Twin Peaks esque
>Watch 5 minutes
>Turn it off
It felt like it should be on MTV. Does it get better? I'm assuming no because of these responses
>>
>>72113316
>Most people like this show because of the 80s nostalgia
I think it's more than that, it kind of takes you back to those days when you were a kid and went on adventures with your small group of close friends, before everyone drifted apart.
>>
>>72113316
It was probably the best Netflix show.
>>
>>72113617
I think you are mistaking that for BoJack Horseman
>>
>>72113617
It's one of the better ones Netflix has put out.

>>72113638
Is that show even good? The pilot was kinda bad imo.

If you like wallowing in depression it's good. The start of the show isn't all that great but it picks up as things go along.
>>
Just finished this a few minutes ago.

What was the deal with Hopper getting in the black car near the end? I think I missed something there

The girl who played Eleven gave a pretty damn impressive performance though. Was really impressed with her, considering child actors are so often shitty.
>>
>>72111525
I'm not sure how spooky this show gets but Penny Dreadful is a great horror show IMO.
Like 1800s british american horror story but much more up front about it, it delves into really supernatural shit, like vampires, 'the old gods', and the 'deep horrors.'
>>
>>72111525
It's a movie not a show, but Super 8.
>>
The reason its being praised is because they put in just enough effort in every aspect (score, cinematography, character development, plot etc ) making it a above average series . They aimed for more then just 80s nostalgia. Its more half life and twin peaks then ET anyways.
>>
>>72113831
He made a deal with Becker to keep everyone alive in exchange for them going in to murder the monster, apparently he also works for them now doing shady shit.
>>
This neo 80s shit really picked up with drive turbo kid hobo with shotgun etc
>>
>>72111525
Idk about creature but any neo 80s movies recently have same feel. The Guest for example.
>>
>>72112192
How come you give stranger things that low of a score?
>>
>>72113316
Really? I felt Winona was bordering overacting in the beginning plus she had little competition since it was just kids and other mediocre actors.
>>
>>72114790
because, it's really not that good. once the euphoria of having mainlined the entire series in a day wears off, more critical assessments will be forthcoming. it's good for a netflix show, but it's not great.
>>
>>72114839
I agree with that Winona was definitely overacting especially in that scene with Jonathan saying CMON MAN HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GO OUT THERE BY YOURSELF and punches him in the chest that seems a little too much I think the jock had the best performance.
>>
I was really hoping Nancy would go insane when she started freaking out after crossing over into the Upside Down, was loving the Lovecraftian vibe early on but that sort of fizzled in the last couple episodes.
>>
>>72114928
Overall I would give this about a 7 because a lot of the tropes we've seen plenty of times before in 80s films. I like the guest more as far as neo 80s go because it at least had a more interesting protagonist that got experimented on.
>>
>>72114854
>it's good for a netflix show,
Yeah I have to say Netrlix and Amazon kind of shit the bed when it comes to quality shows. I want them to do better.
>>
>>72114942
Yeah nothing about this was really lovecraftian. More stephen king mixed with other 80 films.
>>
>>72115196
Actually Stephen King was greatly influenced by Love Crafts work.
>>
>>72115236
I wouldn't consider it cosmic horror but whatever.

Do shows have to masterpieces for you fucks to enjoy yourselves? The show was good, maybe really good. It wasn't a masterpiece but it was still enjoyable as fuck
>>
Just finished it too. I liked it, but having rewatched Aliens, Et, the goonies and the Thing -and- The Gate these past 2 years, I can see all the references too clearly lined up. I hate it and loved it at the same time for being too derivative of the shit I like.
>>
btw, if you see other movie they used the plot on, say.
>>
>>72111525
is this show the kung fury of our generation?
>>
>>72116213
disambiguate movie i are disney whores. confirm?
>>
>>72116294
if generations had the span of 1 year, yes
>>
It's basically a horror version of Stand by Me
>>
>>72115236
King's work is not exclusively Lovecraftian. Like any good author, he picks what he thinks suits his plots.
>>
>>72116467

Is that a bad thing?

i couldn't even make it through hemlock grove's opening sequence, it was so melodramatically shitty. your taste is horrible beyond redemption
>>

I love it, Far Cry Blood Dragon was a great parody of 80's movies.

Everything today is edgy, gritty, and degenerate, the throwback to the 80's tropes was a breath of fresh air.

>no white snake
>no poison

generic synth music that can be played with one finger.

FUCK. YOU.
>>
>>72120013
According to wikipedia Poison's first proper album was released in 1986 and Whitesnake didn't get popular in America until 1984.
>>
>>72116841

He didn't fucking SAY it fucking was "exclusively" lovecraftian. Why does everyone on tv commit this fucking fallacy? He said it was INFLUENCED by Lovecraft. Which isn't a crazy thing to say seeing as EVERYTHING is influenced by Lovecraft.

The series is influenced tonally by Twin Peaks and depending on how this cosmic shit shapes up perhaps Lovecraft.
>>
>>72117213
No way
>>
>>72117088
this and Round the Twist
>>
>>72120361
That didn't worry the production team in most cases. It's so full of anachronisms that I watched like cereal guy.
That being said, I thought it was a really interesting and fun show, and the kids were really well written.
>>
>>72112014
this.

or even better read some of his books.
>>
>>72122097
The kid's show from Australia?
