Why did the new ghostbusters flop? I mean, they perfectly replicated the original film but with perfectly decent women.

The original had some legitimate horror to it back in the day. I remember the fridge seen with Zuul scaring the shit out of me as a kid.
>>

on a budget of 144 million, with an almost guaranteed 40 percent drop next weekend and continuing, this movie will be lucky at this rate if it makes back all it's money and covers the marketing budget.
>>
>>72105166
Apparently not!

>>72105025
It's not a flop but

>More realistically, we're probably looking at a domestic run around $135-145 million. Ghostbusters carries a $144 million budget (net after tax incentives and rebates)

Just breaking even isn't exactly great either.

>perfectly replicated the original film but with perfectly decent women

no. they didn't. that was the problem. all the women were zany and wacky. in the original, winston and igon were the straights while murray and akroyd were the eccentric ones. it created chemistry in the cast and was pretty much what made the whole movie work.

I recently rewatched it, the effects hold up pretty well. They're still at least a little unnerving and definitely better than a lot of bad cg you see today. And the horror was always more lovecraftian than realism. The implications of vastly powerful other dimensional beings whose power is so vastly beyond you is always terrifying.

Melissa McCarthy movies don't have a history of making a lot of cash internationally. Paul Feig's movies have been trending downward in domestic grosses.

It'll probably end with 370 worldwide. No Chinese market to save their ass like Warcraft or terminator 5.

It barely broke 50 in the first week. The OPENING WEEK. In the middle of July, it did this poorly. It's banned in China so it's not going to be opening there. It'll be lucky to make it's budget back. even if it doubled it's gross, it'd take another 5 weeks to make that money assuming it doubled in gross and stayed there for 5 weeks. Which is not gonna fucking happen.
>>
>>72105366
Sorry bud but it is true. Everyone disliked the trailers. That shows there is not a large audience for fart jokes and scooby doo animation in whats meant to be a scary ghost movie with intelligent humor... sony gave us none of that.
>>

I'm mean sure, it doesn't have to make you jump out of your chair and hold up a crucifix while pooping your pants and crying scary, but you can still sense that uneasy sense of dread of something that's inherently creepy.
>>
>>72106009
It won't even make that much. Movie returns usually diminish 40 percent each week. Even if it has another weekend performing exactly as good as it did this week worldwide to account for the drop off, it'd make maybe 200 million in 6 weeks at best, and I cant possibly see it making more than that. it's budget was 150 million. not accounting for marketing, which was probably around 50 million, it will break even at best

Ghostbusters (2016)

After being exposed for her unconventional theories and behavior, an outcast academic joins an obese woman, a lesbian, and a black woman in the fight against an abstract evil everyone else denies exists. Against mass criticism, online harassment, and media skepticism, they endure and continue their fight. Eventually, the true villain reveals himself: an angry, heartless virgin who just wants to destroy the world because he got beat up in high school (or something). They defeat this villain by castrating him. In the end, although much disbelief and persecution still lies ahead, they are rewarded for their courage by the praise of a city that tells them their fight is truly on the right side of history.

I just watched the original ghostbusters movie yesterday, and no it's not.
>>
>>72106809
THIS, for God's sake, this. It was just bizarre to me that this is the film they chose to remake on their little quest to stick it to the man. The vast majority of women won't go out of their way to see this movie and it was baffling to me that it got greenlit in the first place. You'd think that at least somebody at Sony would've realized that the rest of the world isn't, as you put it, the "internet feminism circlejerk world".

The majority of women are going to go out of their way to watch a romance, and there's really nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>72105025
>Why did the new ghostbusters flop?

Because the people who made ghostbusters successful are fat virgins who hate women.
>>
>>72105375
Is that before or after everyone else has taken their cut?
>>
>>72105025

it was directed towards a minor SJW audience,
it also doesn't help when the director basically says Fuck You to the original fanbase.
>>
>>72107820
The villain was the embodiment of the very feminist strawman the director has spent the past several months bitching about. They beat him by shooting him in the dick. Every few minutes somebody gives the main cast an awkwardly placed jab for being female. All the elements borrowed from the old film are completely superficial and it totally cast aside the spirit and themes of that made that movie one of the most popular comedies of all time. You're fucking high.

>quirky and different cast
>abstract evil
>harassment and skepticism

>City celebrates at the end

I mean, the movie pandered and played on nostalgia, but it's not exactly a toxic sjw indoctrination flick. Why not grow up and accept that something can have an opinion different than yours and still be good?
>>
The last act of this movie shit the bed and HARD. The first two acts were okay. Not great, but okay. But then Kevin gets possessed and everything falls apart. The movie abandons any sort of logic it had and throws everything against the wall. Nonstop yelling and CGI havoc for 30 minutes. You can tell this is where all the reshoots and budget cuts happened. It dragged a 7/10 movie down to 5/10.

alien ghosts are potentially a MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR IDEA in the wonderful world of paul feig. check the e-mails from the sony leaks.... we're talking multiple BILLION$ of dollars cuz i mean.... people like ghosts in movies. people like aliens in movies.... but has anyone ever "crossed the streams" (revenue or otherwise) to DARE TO DREAM up the astonishingly amazing iidea of ALIEN GHOSTS?!

Here is the only critique you need:

Original Ghostbusters was filmed as a horror movie, but it was actually a comedy.

New Ghostbusters was filmed as a Paul Feig comedy starring Melissa McCarthy.

That is the very CORE of the issue with this new movie and every other problem flows directly from that false foundation they started with.
>>
>>72105375
Assuming the film even gets to 100 million much less 145, that's not breaking even bro. That's in the negative. Include marketing and distribution share and this film will need at least 400 mil just to break even. In the words of the director, 500 million or bust.

Hollywood accounting works in reverse too. If a megahit like Star Wars can lose money on paper, then a break-even movie like this can be made to look like it turned a profit. Thus justifying an endless wave of spinoffs and sequels, because the boss-man in Tokyo doesn't give a hoot as long as it looks like he's making more yen.

And, y'know, every exec has got this movie's back, because it's Meaningful and shows that Women Are Funny and Women Kick Ass and so on.

Chinese law forbids showing images of desecrated corpses, and expressly forbids zombies and "ghosts" as westerners perceive them. Only certain types of undead are allowed as long as they fit into buddhist taoist propaganda, forget which...

Resident evil movies and games were also banned unless they had nc17equivalent rating.

Also based china never got the originals.

Google chinas policy on undead censorship, its fascinating.

When Tom Rothman came in he cut the budget on it.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/ghostbusters-budget-cut-fox-execs-789896

>On the financial front, Rothman already has managed to tighten the budget on Paul Feig's all-female Ghostbusters, planned for July 2016, without any apparent bloodshed (despite earlier friction with Feig when the director made The Heat at Fox). The Ghostbusters price tag when greenlit by Pascal was a hefty $169 million, with rich deals for talent, including $14 million for Melissa McCarthy and north of $10 million for Feig. Rothman couldn't do anything about those fees, but sources say Feig made tweaks to the script to reduce the cost to $154 million — just a few million above Rothman's target of $150 million.

I'm honestly surprised the movie got greenlit in the first place

The first time I saw the trailer I was completely baffled as to who the movie was trying to make money off of

>Ghostbusters fans. No probably not, it's been a long time and reboots usually suck anyway
>Family and kids. I doubt it, most kids probably don't care about the Ghostbusters anymore so it'll just get beat by whatever other kid friendly movie is out at the time (Secret life of Pets)
>Regular male going movie audience. Probably not unless you are getting cucked into seeing it by a gf or bought a ticket to see how bad it is in person
>regular female movie audience. Once again I doubt it would even pull enough women to make it profitable. I would bet a regular romantic movie or something would blow it out of the water
>feminists. Small niche audience and most probably won't even see it and will just blog about how groundbreaking it was
>lowest common denominator haha fart jokes. I'm assuming this is where most of the pandering went to? Which seems completely fucked as your low tier flick monster will probably just watch reruns of an Adam Sandler movie and probably think women suck at comedy

It just seemed like a fucking terrible idea from the start

Its not "banned" in China per se. It's just that the government has a quota of films it allows from abroad to hit cinemas, something like 20 but maybe more recently. So they have a max limit to how many they let in so that domestic movies can compete. The Chinese decided not to let Nutbusters to hit silver screens because some other foreign film has a better chance at making money in China. Think about it, do you think some old Chinese geezer who works a shift at the factory wants to go see Transformers or Fast and Furious, or instead a movie where five has been 50-something fat American women talk about how they have ectoplasm in their crotch? Same goes for all of China. They're not letting in a C grade comedy starring women in over an action flick or a cartoon or a romance guaranteed to make dough.

>It just seemed like a fucking terrible idea from the start

NUH UH. amy pascal had a BOLD vision of an all-female superhero team, and when she FINALLY got rid of that money-grubbing [ask pol about their parentheses] ivan reitman she had a HOT PROPERTY that was just begging to be modernized for the modern audience (read: re-sold to people who have a positive brand-association with the original ghostbusters from their childhood, as they'll want to take their kid to a progressive movie chock full of positive-programming and fart jokes and scary ALIEN GHOSTS**]

so she FINALLY got rid of reitman (by doing things like inviting EVERYONE to a dinner party but NOT IVAN. LOL) and managed to get the visionary paul feig on board. unlike you and me, paul feig $ee$ the future and come$ up with POTENTIALLY MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR IDEA$ like "ALIEN GHO$T$" and immediately got to work on updating ghostbusters for the modern age, PLUS he was TOTALLY ON BOARD with incorporating amy pascal's vision of an all-female superhero team on board.... so when you have an established HOT PROPERTY like ghostbusters (cuz go figure there aren't any all-female superhero teams in comic books that are BANKABLE like ghostbusters) and a HIP-N-NOW director like paul feig (who never met a woman he didn't immediately defer to and worship to the point of declaring himself unworthy of females and therefore [likely?] going gay) then YEAH IT'S A WIN/WIN CUZ NOW YOU CAN DO YOUR ALL-FEMALE SUPERHERO PET PROJECT AND COUPLE IT WITH A PRE-ESTABLISHED WINNING FORMULA LIKE GHOSTBUSTERS.

so anon, as i have said WITH SPORADIC BURSTS OF EMPHASIS THAT DON'T MAKE ME LOOK CRAZY OR OTHERWISE IMBALANCED, this was actually a FANTASTIC IDEA, except that amy pascal and paul feig DROPPED THE BALL with sloppy execution of POTENTIALLY MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR IDEAS (alien ghosts and all-female sueprheroes) and therefore TOM ROTHMAN replaced amy pascal as head of sony, paul feig cried and claimed soggy knees, and GB RULES

** = paul feig said it himself, ALIEN GHOSTS ARE A POTENTIALLY MULTI-BILLION IDEA. people love movies about ghosts. people love movies about aliens.... what if someone had the BOLD AND DARINGLY-ORIGINAL VISION TO COMBINE THEM? billions of dollars ensue.

>TLDR TLDR TLDR = NUH UH to your stuff cuz basically you dont have the vision to see the new demographics who will spend, potentially, MULTIPLE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS on a fantasyic movie that reboots a well-established and beloved brand with an ALL-FEMALE SUPERHERO TEAM and of course the proverbial money shot of ALIEN GHOSTS.

you know technically >>72111254 is right, but i also think that you have a point which says something about how the studio (sony) saw this movie.

typically a movie like this (that's theoretically supposed to have some scary/ish shit in it (outside of pol going out of their way to call leslie jones a "sheboon" or something) wouldn't be out of place coming out in october with halloween in mind, however sony saw this as a bigtime summer blockbuster fare and therefore elected for the big summer $$$.

seriously, nevar forget that sony expected this movie to kick off some sort of shared cinematic universe with multiple spinoffs (see slimer and the "original" ecto-1 from this movie ending up in a portal at the end so they can deposit slimer and his bitch wherever they want in the spinoff) and then god knows what they thought would come after that. i know during the creation of the movie they were thinking about having an all-male team of ghostbusters spin off of this movie (i know, right? who would go see that? it's [current year] so comeon.... nobody wants to go see 4 guys going around cracking jokes while catching ghosts) and then they do their movie and they show up in ghostbusters 2 (proper, with the chicks) via a cameo/plug-for-their-movie and then by the time ghostbusters 2 finishes and they do the all-male GB spinoff movie they establish a super mega uber ultra cosmic-level-threat (zuul? gozer?) that both ghostbusters teams gotta team up and fight (along with slimer, cuz "you know, for kids" - the hudsucker proxy)

alas, instead of all that they made this fucking turd where paul feig was legitimately assblasted that nobody "got" his giant possessed-authority (cops+military) dance # right b4 the final showdown of GBs vs big-bad (cuz you know, it HAS to ONLY be the ghostbusters cuz there's a poignant metaphor about how the authorities are always engaged in the same ol song and dance)

but ALAS, misogyny and unfounded internet hate killed it all. RIP

idk about you, but being born in 2012 (time traveler. i had to come back cuz [spoilers]) i've never got to see a movie in my lifetime with an all-male cast (especially white ppl, where at least nowadays in the 2050s we're diversity-casting white ppl in movies cuz some conspiratards say that the jews are trying to do a #BrownGenocide by forcing millions of white people to immigrate to predominantly-brown countries and they build all kinds of churches for them and they start having 5 kids per family adn within ~25-50yrs if we're not careful the whites will start having 15-25% and wanting "christian law" and whatnot. baka. you cant say this nowadays (literally they'll shoot you) but it's downright sickening to see every tv show having a beautiful brown woman hook up with a white guy cuz she wants the BWC. hell they just did a malcolm X remake where they cast benedict cumberbatch jr. as malcolm X despite all of the protests and outcries on twatter [successor to twitter after the great schism of 2019. starred off as a joke name parody of twitter but ended up becoming the #1 social media outlet after the schism)

The thing is Sony has never had any love for Ghostbusters from the moment they acquired it along with Columbia Pictures. Their Extreme Ghostbusters cartoon was made of extremely stupid ideas and the 2009 Ghostbusters Videogame was allowed to make the competing Xbox 360 its lead development platform while their own Playstation 3 got the inferior port.

>a sense of wonder and adventure.

Fucking this. That's what Ghostbusters was at heart, an adventure/comedy.

They were everywhere in the 80s. Indiana Jones, Star Wars, The Goonies, Monster Squad, Romancing the fucking Stone, Crocodile Dundee.

It's really what modern blockbusters lack, that sense of adventure, of going to an obscure, probably magical place just to see what's there, or to discover something extraordinary in the otherwise mundane. Superheroes only care about saving people, and comedies are now just improv fests against a backdrop set up specifically to sell tickets.
>>
>>72105025
Why?
Well first off its because when the cast was decided an all women cast, people made it political.
Far left started rubbing nerds face it by taunts on social media. On the other side the far right just hated the idea of a full female cast.
Then the producers got involved and Fieg went all out bitch mode.
This was an attempt to put white nerds in their place, the problem is that is their main audience. Even if theyou like it or not that is the Ghostbusters largest demographic and by alienating them you lose a lot of money and respect around your peers.
It failed because of radical leftist pride.
Their "I on the right side of history" aspect skewed the vision and their spite for the nerds community.

>what's sad is that you're right and then that means the $$$FUCKED FINANCIALS$$$ = there's no way in hell we get our "all male ghostbusters" $pinoff.

Ignoring the rest of your post that seems to have been produced by a diarrhea-to-text program, is there actually anyone ITT that would have been excited to go see a rebooted Ghostbusters if the cast had been all male?

Serious question here. Because I wouldn't have wanted to see this shit regardless. The gender of the Ghostbusters doesn't matter, because let's face it, it still would have been an ironically soulless cash grab banking on the success of the original to put butts in seats.

There's no way a modern gb movie would succeed.
The original cast is too old, modern comedians just aren't funny, PC culture wouldn't allow even half of the jokes that were in the original movie (which were tame to begin with).
Not to mention that ghostbusters as a concept couldn't really work with today's cynical moviegoers.
It would have failed regardless of the cast's gender.

>Perfectly replicated the original film
If you want to bait, do it, but at least put some effort in it.
>>

>The original cast is too old, modern comedians just aren't funny

That's the first problem. You don't cast fucking comedians for a Ghostbusters movie. Where the fuck does this idea come from that you need to cast comedians to make a funny movie? The writers need to be funny, not the actors.
>>
>>72120951
The original was kind of a perfect storm though. Half the actors weren't what they wanted, originally. A hallmark of greats is when the dream of the creator is haltered by tons of "no" and "can't". When a director gets everything they want, movies tend to be shit.
>>
>>72120640
It would have done better if it was a sequel, I'm sure of this. If this wasn't an attempt to rewrite ghostbusters in their own image, meaning political soap box shit, then this would have been a B movie at best.

>>
>>72121340
It'll drop by at least 40% by its second weekend.
Bad word of mouth, and considering the audience score that is very possible, may dip that down to around 60%.

Third weekend will be even lower.

At best, it'll break even with the posted budget, and that's not counting advertising.

Doesn't help that it wasn't number 1 this weekend, and lost to a generic CGI dog movie that happened to be in its second weekend.

Ghostbusters relied on its lack of competition, only expecting to worry about a mid-budget Bryan Cranston movie about a DEA agent. The Secret Life of Pets took a healthy chunk out of Ghostbusters' revenue.

Next week it has Star Trek Beyond, Lights Out, and Ice Age: Collision Course to worry about.

Opening weekend makes or breaks a movie, and this movie is getting "ho-hum" buzz, despite how much critics with an agenda have been trying to prop it up.

Slightly related, but is the Playstation brand pretty much the only thing keeping Sony afloat at this point? I seems to be kicking ass, while the electronics division isn't doing so hot, and the movie division is...well...what it is.

Deadpool was about feminism?

E3 got gave the PS4 sales spike this year thanks to its exclusives actually looking promising (I caved and got one myself, actually). Xbone made all of its future exclusives Windows 10 compatible, which means they have no exclusives anymore.
Wii U is effectively dead aside from its new Zelda game. They've already announced their new console.

I'd say yeah, Sony's only doing well on the video game front. It should stop making shitty movies and stick with what they're good at.

One pegging gag with the punchline being "Nope, this ain't me, ain't happening" when he felt the tip.

This was during a montage where Deadpool was fucking his GF through every holiday.

I would have been more ok with it if they had gone with some kind of passing of the torch to the next generation Ghostbusters or something, while still having the originals present and relevant.

It's one of the few parts of Sony in the green, as I understand it. Hilariously the real money maker? Life insurance, it accounts for over 60% of their profits most years.

No they don't. Honestly no one outside USA is even going to see this.

Yes, the ban is just an excuse for communist shit and protecting their own industry, but a ban is a ban.

He doesn't hit ladies out to kill him thinking it's sexist.

Also, manbabies love fart jokes only if it's a man doing it.

>He doesn't hit ladies out to kill him thinking it's sexist.

That was a parody of the social bullshit we're dealing with.

If he started preaching about how it's wrong to hit a woman, then it would be a feminist piece of shit.

Instead he acted confused, making fun of the paradox that while hitting a woman is misogynistic, not hitting a woman is also sexist in the minds of feminists.

If anything it was criticizing the entire movement.

He does shoot them offscreen while pondering if it's sexist to fight them or to avoid fighting them

that one was alright, but they dragged it out far too long with the "don't ever compare me to the mayor from jaws" response. they should have just left it as a funny one-liner.

>The government official had stated on record that their real reason to block it is

This is a country that bans movies with anything to do with the undead to ensure a way of thinking with it's people. That has consistent rampant copywright breaches and piracy. That has "democracy" where your votes won't count for a new election of government. That runs firewalls against search engines.

And you're fucking listening to their government official?

In another deleted scene Leon fucked Mathilda in a romantic sex scene.

Deleted scenes mean fuck-all at the end of the day.

>Europe

Except nobody cares for Ghostbusters here, and there isn't any weight to it from not having a cult following. Ghostbusters is a quintessentially american movie, if not New Yorker movie. I could only smile at the jokes after having lived a year or two in New York.

What people in Europe see are unfunny trailers, and they can't even remember the 1984 version. Trust me, no one is seeing it here.

>>72121923
To be fair. America, Europe and Australia are pretty fucked with their censoring shit too, just in different ways.
