The series is pretty okay overall (had potential) but I think a lot of people can't look at it objectively because "muh cancelled too soon". I don't find Fillion appealing as an actor, and even more so as an unlikable character.
The movie was a pile of shit but it was all we could get. I'm confident it was just a long episode that served as a vessel to give what little fan service they could in the way of River actually demonstrating her abilities, and killing Wash was just a cheap emotional ploy.

If it ever got renewed I don't know how I would react. Despite the occasional off episode I don't think I've ever built up as much of an emotional attachment to a show. I genuinely think I would be sick and pass out if it was renewed.heart of gold gets too much shit, it's actually pretty good. trash for worst ep

This is the thing - I'm sure the show would have got better and better. So much mediocre sci fi getting commissioned these days like dark matter and the expanse, if firefly had been made today there would have been no issues.
