I need the help of the writers out there. I am looking for the adjective sometimes used to mean a torture or a sentence is too severe. The word harkens back to a time in history. I've heard lawyers use the adjective when describing the kinds of sentences issued by a harsh judge. The word isn't "medieval", but it is something similar. It is a word that points back in time but functions as an adjective. For example, "The tax laws are so byzantine", where "byzantine" implies complexity and is derived from Byzantine architectural design that was complex and ornate in nature.
I know at least one of you knows the word I am trying to find. Help me, please. I'm stuck. You know the feel.
