It didn't work out fine. Most of each series was good but they fit together terribly. They didn't even care about coordinating novels between respective series until Vector Prime. Which ultimately hurt that and all following books because of so much shit they had to carry on. (especially the youth books the corellian trilogy and kevin j anderson's trilogy)

It just so happens that the planet Luke was hiding on is right around where the Rakatan Homeworld was.
This, with Luke having gone off to "find something" and leaving behind map fragments, leading to a semi-oceanic planet that just so happens to fit the bill of the Rakatan Empire, in a movie where the First Order under the leadership of a mysterious entity who is supposedly "not a Sith" according to JJ but can teach the dark side of the force, built a space station that harnesses the power of stars.
It has already begun.And that's not mentioning Rebels using actual Kotor spaceship designs, bringing up Malachor, ancient powers beyond imagination and of course Kylo's ultra edgy mask that looks like Revans by complete and total coincidence, even though his lightsaber is a relic from the Mandalorian Wars where Revan turned to the dark side.

Honestly, he is probably the most underrated character in the whole Star Wars fiction.
He was the first (and basically only) Imperial character who was basically a good man AND totally loyal to the Empire.
Every other single good Imperial character I know of had to eventually be made to switch sides. Like turning on the Empire was the test to define if they were moral characters or not.
But here you finally get someone who believes in what the Empire stands for. He knows it has flaws. And one of the greatest moments is when he is forced to face the fact that the Empire wasn't actually successful because of its great military and ideals, but because of Sith influence. He had to swallow the fact that the galaxy's fate really does seem to be controlled by larger than life special people like Sith and Jedi, and normies like him were just fooled into believing they had real pull in their fates and the fate of the Galaxy.
And he served under various personalities, like Palpatine, Thrawn, Dalaa, etc. until he finally worked his way to basically being the de facto leader of the Empire. An honest man finally made it to the top without treachery or cheating. And then he turned the Imperial Remnant into the Empire he had always believed it was. He got the Moffs to stop being such self-centered, petty warlords and finally made the Empire real and solid without relying on charismatic space wizards or alien geniuses.
