Took me two days, but I watched it. Maybe some of you patricians can help me out. Why did it end with a shot of one of the least important characters, why do you never see Pierre or Igor, and what, generally speaking, did Rivvette mean by this?

The movie is so full of dialogue, but it is mostly utter nonsense, delivered by actors who were probably told by Zulawski to "flail like marionettes" clawing at the air. I like the idea of combining a science fiction movie with some unholy version of the Bible, but I hated this movie. The director seems to think his ideas are more profound when the actors delivering them are screaming at each other, or if they look at the camera with freakishly contorted faces. Yes yes the idea of being God on a new unknown world drove the astronauts into megalomaniacal insanity. Makes sense. But after a certain point, it becomes exhausting and tedious, no matter how amazing the costumes and the sets and the effort it took to get the film made were.

Yes, the Polish government shut this movie down in the 70s, and the ten years of developmental hell caused a fifth of the movie to be lost, and it's incredibly admirable that Zulawski painstakingly got the movie released. Congratulations. But I have to go with my gut on this one, and my gut tells me this movie was not worth the effort. The storyline has no sense of transition or development: Things happen, decades pass, and the viewer is expected to take it at face value. Funny how the "advanced aging" story conceit stopped working around halfway through.

This was a mess. An admirable mess, sure, but just horrible.
the only thing you should get back into is killing yourself

So Everybody Wants Some was pretty disappointing. It's just Dazed and Confused except the only thing the cast had me convinced on is that they are all approaching 40 and definitely not college age. It even has the same curb crawling car intro with some old rock, I hope Linklater hasn't hit his limit and is gonna start backtracking to revive the feel he invoked about 20 years ago.

Shocking stuff. They didn't feel or look like college age kids, sure they tried to dress them up and capture the presence but it just failed for me. Every character barring two looked about 30 at least and some of the conversations really tried to channel the essence of Dazed and Confused but the cast didn't have the charisma to pull it off.

Fair enough. I wish Linklater had tried to add something new to his filmography rather than essentially reworking Dazed and Confused-- my key issue with it I guess. I probably just prefer the cast from the former film as they're more recognisable for me and despite the films being close in time period, the wardrobe and setting felt more carefully chosen and enhancing.

The new hot meme is that the TSPDT list is either good or bad

See Toni Erdmann, it's great
>>
Alle Anderen wasn't anywhere near great. Quite disappointing, in fact :^(

Welp, I thought to check that out first.
Just stick with Toni Erdmann then?

https://letterboxd.com/CINOMA/

helloooooooooo
>>
>>72081665
Again, you're missing the point.
It's not whether it is good or bad, but that it is constantly spammed here and is seen as some sort of cinematic standard by which to claim superiority over others because they haven't seen x percent.
We should be fostering diverse taste in films, not prescribing the same, tired old aggregate list (which does in fact have a lot of rubbish on it, eg Inception).
>>
1. Late Spring
2. Tokyo Story
3. Early Spring
4. Equinox Flower
5. Early Summer
6. Good Morning
7. Floating Weeds
8. Woman of Tokyo
>>
>>72082010
No, no, watch it. Disappointing or not, on such a short filmography, and having made apparently a film that is one of the best of a given a year, gives a director a certain need of having his works watched.
>>
>>72082095
I agree with you on that but I would argue that a lot of the films on that list are essential for cinephiles.
>>
>>72082074
When are you going to start logging films?
I want to follow you, but your profile is too bare at the moment.

>>72082109
I still have so many to see.
Trying to get familiar with other Japanese directors from that time period at the moment.
I really want to get into Naruse as well.

>>72082169
Alright, I'll check it out.

>>72082197
Well, I have to agree with you on that as well.
>>
>>72082222
we need to pick a Naruse to watch bud
>>
>>72082095
It's not constantly spammed here. Yet, when posted, it seem to trigger certain darlings.
It IS a cinematic standard, a canon, and it should- and to some still insufficient extent, is- be expected of people to watch what's in said canon, and on a list with a thousand and the more, wouldn't be difficult to anyone serious about the business to engage in these adventures.
Whom do not possess even that- or bigger crime, at least the intention-, which is quite basic, is to be seen as inferior, naturally.
The 'same', 'tired', 'old' is a pathetic diatribe against a thing that is none of three, considering its changeability and the fact that people like you(You) have not any depth on it alone, and then dare to want to talk some bullshit about "let's foster the diversity of taste".
So, the PTSD list- or others of the kind- is not 'problematic' at all, but evokes the insecurity in embryos very easily, which is unfortunate, considering that it should be simply a happy fuel.
>>
>>72082388
your wrong
>>
>>72082388
Fair enough. There is some merit to recommending the list to people just starting out with films, but otherwise I think it is overvalued by a large margin.
And I still think /lbg/ has unhealthy obsession with it.

>people like you(You) have not any depth on it alone, and then dare to want to talk some bullshit about "let's foster the diversity of taste"
The thing is, I am in no rush to watch a lot of these so-called classics. I am aware of many of them (most are on my watchlist), and when the mood strikes me I will watch them.
Fostering diverse tastes makes for a more interesting general (when it is not swamped by shitposting) and so it is not talking bullshit.

>>
>>72082922
If I expected an answer with such reasonability, I wouldn't have pushed the personal side so strongly.
And as a general advice- to myself even-, and a thing to happen naturally really, you watch the canon, which is always getting bigger, and you watch whatever you want for any reason. The lists and etc. are not to be limiting anyone's experience, quite the contrary.

In a way. Serves the purpose of engaging you with such a great director. Bit weird though to start on a guy by his unintended final film.

However, Clover cautions audiences against seeing "final girls" as products of feminism. Final girls are still seen like the other women who have been killed after taking part in sexual activities by being a part of "the chase". Clover concludes that the final girl is "an agreed upon fiction [for] male-viewers' use of her as a vehicle for his own sadomasochistic fantasies."

And acting like there is no sexism historically in genre films just seems extremely dumb. They were absolutely male-centric, being made by men to pander to men. thats what makes them so great

I just tried a free month to test it in January. They don't even have Game of Thrones. Only currently airing content was subbed, but nobody watches subs here. Shitty interface and no content. Dropped. I will pay when someone gives me more convenient way to get flicks than Rutracker and eztv.

I could do that list just with Ford westerns. Off the top of my head:

The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
My Darling Clementine
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Red River
El Dorado
Rio Bravo
The Day of the Outlaw
The Shooting
Johnny Guitar

>>
>>72088040
there are very few dubs that are better than the original (ie nausicaa)
not only do you lose the immersion of the time and place where the film is set, but also the nuances of the language (which sadly, poor subs will fail to capture)
