is this true?

You can see the managements mind process with this film so clearly.

They knew China would ban it so it had to be a massive audience pull in the western territories. Their mindset was that men would go see it no matter what (like with star wars) and that if they made it a feminist movie, all the women would go see it too and that would double the audience. They even put a "hunk" in it for added lure to women.

In the end not only did they turn off all the men from seeing it but the women didn't go either.

This is an utter fail, mainly from the PR after the fact. I hope the director never works on anything other than tiny budget movies again.
>>
it's cool how pushing box office numbers to dazzle audiences with big numbers was a way for hollywood studios to further market their movies & generate buzz, and now every educated Kinohead follows this pattern like they are some market insiders tapping into meaningful data

Nah, the emails have shown it was a failure from conception. This is hopefully the end of Amy Pascal. She's literally shit the bed by forcing a feminist agenda instead of trying to make good movies with women in them.

I mean does it really deserve to bomb that much? Just the movie on its own ignoring the advertising campaign of insulting everyone.

51 million at the BO is great by any standards. Baby men forever anally devastated

As a gamer (don't tell /tv/) I stopped caring about games journalism a long time before this whole shit went down.
Not saying "both sides are equally wrong" or something like that but it got embarrassing from all sides pretty fast.
>>
>>72053130
>I mean does it really deserve to bomb that much?

Kind of a loaded question. Because people would have to see it in order for it to be successful.

There have been other really great movies this year that bombed at the box office, they didn't deserve to bomb, but thats the nature of cinema these days.

The question should be, "Does the movie deserve so much hate?" No, it's just a movie and after a month no one will care.

But, from another perspective. IMO, they didn't try and make a good movie they specifically made a movie with all women to make a SJW feminist statement. (leaked emails corroborate this sentiment)

So fuck them and their agenda. They should've just made a true sequel to GB.
>>
>>72053394

No really, where are the international numbers?
>>
>>72053709
Pretty much. Problem with the industry, from their POV, is that they simply cannot understand the creative process and put it into tangible metrics. Basically, they cannot pinpoint exactly why movie A did so well so they can copy it in the future. Failed box office figures are merely a consequence of this.
>>
So can someone tell me why Sony thought antagonizing GB fans was a good marketing tactic?

Did they really think appealing to the SJW mindset would bring in enough new viewers to offset the loss from traditional GB fans?

Aside from merchandising, which won't be significant for Ghostbusters, box office gross is still well and truly where the most significant portion of a film's profits come from.

DVD isn't the crutch for underperforming films it once was, streaming services purchase films on rights in bulk, rental entities have never been in such little quantity and no high budget film is going to recoup major losses off the back of a dismal box office.

Explain to me the outside markets where "especially now, and most of the films profit comes from."

Yes, the emails proved Feig and Pascal strong armed Reitman out of any creative control or input who wanted a mixed cast and to be a proper sequel.

Feig and Pascal called for an all women cast with women scientists to be the leads.

Then they scrapped everything from Reitman.

In theory Thiel could have used his money to drag the case out forever to slowly bleed Gawker but it ended up just not mattering. The reduction in ad revenues meant Gawker couldn't afford the good lawyers that would tell them not to act like sarcastic twats and make child porn jokes in court.

Women don't watch movies on their own unless its romantic comedies and even in that case most of the sales come from couples.

Most other succesful movies are men liking them and then women wanting to fit into the trend. Making a non romantic comedy geared towards women is always a guaranteed blunder.
>>

They probably should have shown Chris Hemsworth shirtless and wet in the commercials to pull in the women

It was a rant with a critical edge, the spoiler free is a better review, but if you really want to know how bad it was, you need the spoiler review. It tells ypou everything you need.

I think the only positive he had to say was that there were two laughs in the film and the visuals were in parts OK.

4chan and twitter were having lulz over an indie game developer cum dumpster fucking one of their "favorite" game journalists for a website that was giving her a suspiciously large amount of press. Said website responded to the accusations of conflicting interests by declaring war on the gaming community, in collaboration with a bunch of other websites. What followed was a year of drama, shitflinging and witch hunts, which ultimately ended when the culture war shifted to a larger playing field.

Also, Hulk Hogan made the website at the center of the controversy his bitch when they posted a sex tape of him that was recorded without his consent, and refused a court order to take it down. He successfully sued them for $100 million and now they're going out of business. Karma hit them like a freight train of pain.
>>
>>72056721

Even if China was in play, the idea a Ghostbusters film needs to do well beyond 500 million worldwide to break even is atrocious.

Merch sales aren't a factor in film production costs marketing. They could make a billion dollars in toy sales, but still come up short at the box office.

Losing out to Secret Light of Pets was something we expected, but it's gonna drop heavily next week with Star Trek and Ice Age coming out. China pulling out, and the low % of return they make overseas means it needed to be big here, and there really isn't a scenario in which GB's makes it.

It is their fault for making it a reboot and in a world where the original Ghostbusters team never existed... this is why I dont get all the cameos from the old and the Ramis bust... of course they did this to pander the old fans but then Feig should have known from the beginning that the old fans are going to hate the idea of a remake (the women are not the problem. They could have easily made the women the daughters of the old Ghostbusters and even have the old Ghostbusters die and it being very emotional where the females then take over. THAT would have been way better than this).

Deadpool had a really great team behind it.

Only thing I appreciate about this capeshit is that it was made with care and passion, it wasn't some cashgrab manufactured movie.

>Good bring back Conan, commando type movies .
Thing is, all films now have to cost 60-200 million dollars. Look at the budget at a lot of those 80's masculine films. They were pretty cheap small films. Predator cost 15-18 million. These films were based on mostly male audiences. But if you increase the budget, you need to expand the audience. So you need to make it PG-13 and add women, and water it down.

Macho male only films don't exist or work in today's hollywood.
>>
>>72058506

It's pretty good. Not my favorite. I re-watched it and it did make me laugh at a few times. The jokes are mostly dialogue and character interactions rather than slapstick or physical comedy.

The remake/reboot is really making me apprecaite the original way more.

Basically some twatty SJW girl with no real talent named Zoe Quinn created a indie Flash game called Depression Quest. It sucked, but it somehow got shout-outs on a few gaming websites and even uploaded for download on Steam. A lot of people thought it was extremely out of place and not up to even Steam's admittedly lenient standards.

A little while later, Zoe Quinn's ex-boyfriend goes public with news that Zoe admitted to him not only was she cheating on him, but cheating on him with five separate people on him.
These 5 people turned out to be owners of moderately-trafficked blog and review-sites, all of which just so happened to ones that gave Depression Quest attention and/or good reviews. The guy provided chat-logs and Skype Text conversation screenshots and things like that for evidence.

Basically, Zoe Quinn sucked and fucked her way to good reviews and exposure.

People naturally reacted negatively to this, as it was a bald-faced example of corruption, sleaze and back-door dealings in the world of videogame journalism, which is already pretty corrupt as it is.

Basically Zoe Quinn and the people that supported her ran damage-control, which took the form of spinning any criticism against Zoe Quinn as "misogyny" and "sexism".
Other more mainstream sites like Kotaku that are already run by leftists took this angle and ran with it, and started making articles to spread this narrative.

Basically idiots bought into this, and were thusly distracted from corporate/personal corruption. Mission accomplished.

CNN even did a segment on how poor and oppressed Zoe was by this supposed evil consortium that supposedly just really hates vaginas, claiming she's received "death threats" and had to move out of the country, funded by her loyal supporters of course.
Anita even went on the Colbert show and lied to the entire nation about how it was really just a conspiracy by "angry sexist males" and totally not an issue of morals or corruption or anything.

Correct me if wrong:
Box office is determined by the number of tickets sold during the very first views of it. Box office is not a product of the movies quality but it's marketing/ promotion, as the very first views may only be "tryouts", a complete idea about the movie has not been formed and reception is not detrmined yet.
All products success is mostly determined by the profits, yes, but the factor for this is not only quality but marketing too.
SUCCESSFUL=/=ACTUALLY GOOD

It would have definitely been a good draw if the writer/director didn't feel the need to use the platform as a soapbox for her personal ideals and then have the entire marketing campaigned around "If you don't see this and like it then you're a sexist pig."

It definitely could have been a decent film, not fantastic because all reboots tend to inherently be shittier than the originals.

Imagine turning in a book report in 2nd grade

If they want to revitalize the ghostbusters franchise, fine. But they completely fucked up the tone of the movie by making it more of a low brow humor and filling it with actresses that had no chemistry and were unfunny.

That and the final action scene is beyond stupid. Patty just tackles people and they girls fight a green screen.
