Its a subversion of the slasher genre. Jason, Michael Myers, Freddie, etc killed weak, helpless teenage girls. Now you have the monster chasing heavily armed, badass men and still killing them. At the end, the main character has to leave his weapons behind and use smarts to kill the monster rather than a knife or gun or whatever was normally used to kill a typical slasher villain.
