>>

The Japanese release is in two weeks. I'm assuming that North American distributors are waiting to see how it performs in its own country before making any commitments about bringing it to the US.
>>
>>72050741
The compositing of the Godzilla suit into live action photography is pretty impressive. I think it kinda proves that back in the old days, visual effects looked shoddy more because of their poor integration - like how the film quality degrades with each layer of special effects that's added to it, or the black lines you'd often get around blue screened footage, of the need for a locked off camera in visual effects shots...

We saw all this and decided not only that analogue methods don't cut it when it comes to the compositing of visual effects, but also that the effects themselves should be computer generated, leading to at least two decades of unconvincing, poorly rendered effects.
>>
>>72051827

He doesn't direct the Eva movies though, that's another guy. He's just the producer.

According to Toho it isn't a suit. Godzilla is completely CGI in the new film.

How does it compare to Godzilla (2014)?
>>
>>72052307

Honestly outside of three REALLY noticable examples, Godzilla was integreated pretty well in the original 1954 film. It helped that the movie is mostly at night though.

Yeah, I mean a lot of the Godzilla stuff across the years has been really good, and works really well, if not often obviously minatures.

I think my point is that here in the west, we've developed such an unhealthy obsession with computers that this notion has been developed that they should be used for EVERYTHING, resulting in so much shoddy CGI in Hollywood blockbusters.

Although granted, we need it to be terrible before we could get to the point where, like today, CGI rendering can be pretty good, but it doesn't change the fact that a simpler, analogue option can still look better in the long run.
>>
>>72051945

I hope Godzilla actually isn't entirely CGI. Why can't Japan just accept and realize they fucking suck at CGI? I've seen US tv commercials with better CGI than Japan feature films.

If this movie fails Japan's entire film industry is tanking with it, they put everything into it and took a huge risk because Godzilla isn't popular with Japs anymore who would rather watch anal seepage like One Piece.

Yes. A physical prop does exist. Here's a more recent image of it. However, for months now, Toho has been claiming that Godzilla will be completely CGI in Resurgence.

Doesn't mean anything, there is a few CGI-only shots in the first trailer, but most of it is practical (probably not a suit, though).

The glow on his scars and the cartoon helicopters in the new spot are CGI, of course.

You'll get no disagreements from me. Plus, its box office competition was The Incredibles and Howl's Moving Castle.

On another note, don't forget about the Godzilla x Eva Crossover Promotion happening right now. I've heard the merchandise is selling well. Maybe Toho can attract a larger audience. Rebuild does big business in Japan.

>>72053545

> there is a few CGI-only shots in the first trailer, but most of it is practical (probably not a suit, though).
Ragone said the effects in the first trailer weren't finished and Shinji Higuchi (special effects director) later admitted they were behind. Plus he confirmed that digital effects were the primary method of bringing Godzilla to life this time around. Unless Toho is lying, it looks like we have our first CGI Japanese Godzilla.

Anno seems to be looking towards Gojira (1954) for most of his inspiration. Allegedly, he wants to surpass it and his new film will feature a similar amount of Godzilla. Adjusted for running time I hope. Gojira (1954) is an hour and thirty minutes. Resurgence will be two hours.
>>
Reminder that Anno is a master of trailers.

And remember his last big movie was Evangelion 3.0.

Don't be fooled by a good looking trailer.

The movie will probably waste 30 minutes on Godzilla having some homoerotic romance with some jap teenager.

Allegedly Anno will be addressing the Fukushima Accident, the recent push for Japanese remilitarization, and the influence/effectiveness of the government (both international and domestic). I think that's more than a simple kaiju flick. And from the sound of it, Godzilla will be treated like an actual god this time around. Maybe something similar to the Forrest Spirit of Princess Mononoke or God Warrior of Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind
>>
>>72055136

Many of Godzilla's movies and big enemies reinstate the same message of the 54 movie but are topographical for their time.

What I mean is that Godzilla was the horror the post-war Japan felt at atomic weapons, Ghidorah was the terror of the space age, Hedorah was the pollution that was killing Japan at the time, in 1984 the true terror was Cold War tension, and Biollante the fear of genetic engineering that was a big thing at that time (Jurassic Park novel for example also reflected it)
And now after Fukushima they have another huge tragedy to give birth to him again

Hedorah was kind of a loose remake of Gojira (1954). Except war and nuclear weapon anxieties were replaced with concerns about rampant pollution. Seriously, think about it.

And the Heisei films usually shoehorned in some heavy handed, irrelevant message. Especially at the end. Godzilla vs Mothra (1992) was the worst offender in this regard.

Return of Godzilla was dull attempt to reclaim the glory of the past and touch upon Cold War fears. The only things that film has going for it is the moody atmosphere and score.

Godzilla vs Biollante was ambitious and one of the better films since the end of the Golden Age. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah was a set down. But still solid. Everything else was varying degrees of laziness. You literally watch the visual effects decline in quality every installment. And there was no excuse. Compare these films to the Heisei Gamera Trilogy and remember that the latter was produced on much smaller budgets.

Anon. If you remove the emotional power and interesting characters from Gojira (1954), you get Return of Godzilla. I understand what it was going for. But you gotta admit it's pretty weak. Godzilla (2014) has similar flaws. I'd take an entertaining film like Godzilla vs Gigan over either of them. The characters may not be the most developed or the production value the greatest, but at least it's interesting and creative. And Gojira/King of the Monster is my favorite movie.

Here is an excellent comment on the matter by Keith. Also known as kpa on various kaiju forums:

"Actually GODZILLA (1984) was generally considered a disappointment by Toho, critics, and audiences because it's missing all the subtext and symbolism of the original GODZILLA. There's no reason given or implied for Godzilla's return, and his attack on Tokyo pales in comparison to what he did in 1954 (Godzilla does just wander around without purpose in that film). People felt is was not much more than a watered-down imitation of a classic, and the mixed reaction played a large part in the five year gap for the sequel."

Curiosity mainly

I want to see whether it covers the time skip and puts 3.0 in some kind of context, or whether it continues completely with more "wtf are you thinking making this shit, Anno?"

An excuse for more music from Shiro can't be bad either - though Godzilla is delivering on that front too.

Interesting. David Kalat's A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series only shows the movie breaking even if I remember correctly. And keep in mind that the Japanese movie industry borderline died in the late 60s and 70s. People turned to television and many studios shut down. Return of Godzilla was the first film in nearly a decade, meaning there was a considerable amount of hype behind it. Toho revived the franchise due to public interest.

> After the film's lackluster performance in the Japanese box office and the ultimate shelving of Steve Miner's Godzilla 3D project, Toho decided to distribute the film overseas in order to regain lost profits. New World Pictures acquired The Return of Godzilla for distribution in North America, and changed the title to Godzilla 1985, bringing back Raymond Burr in order to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Godzilla: King of the Monsters!.

> Originally, New World reportedly planned to re-write the dialogue in order to turn the film into a tongue-in-cheek comedy starring Leslie Nielsen (à la What's Up, Tiger Lily?), but this plan was reportedly scrapped because Raymond Burr expressed displeasure at the idea, taking the idea of Godzilla as a nuclear metaphor seriously.

Don't forget. This incarnation of Godzilla will be making his debut next Friday.

>Crayon Shin-Chan vs. SHIN GODZILLA (Anime Collaboration)

>Quick summary: July 22nd, the Crayon Shin-chan series will be storming a collaboration episode with co-star TOHO monster icon Godzilla! Specifically SHIN GODZILLA. The episode titled "Shinnosuke vs. Shin Godzilla's Zone" The mysterious giant monster Godzilla has invaded Kasukabe, Saitama. The town will be gradually destroyed, including the residence of the Nohara family house, which has 32 years of mortgage payments left on it.

>Shinnosuke's Kasukabe Defense Corps will be based within the Futaba Kindergarten school area, where a strange battle will unfold involving Shinnosuke himself.

>Side notes: Godzilla's roar within this anime will be his official roar sourced from the upcoming movie.

>-TV Asahi will be broadcasting the episode July 22nd
>-This will be the first time Shin Godzilla will appear within an anime
>-Godzilla's full design and execution have been faithfully reproduced, from his movements, irregular teeth; to his red and black skin.

GMK is different since the events of '98 were mentioned and Godzilla had only attacked Japan the one time and maybe not everybody believed it.

The only connection between '98 and GFW is they use a version of the same monster. The GFW Zilla could have attacked New York in 1998 but it's never mentioned or implied.

Yeah. 3.0 felt very disconnected. It was an unconventional way of building upon the foundations laid by what came before it. The film raises more questions than it answers. Everything probably could have been avoided if Misato had just taken five minutes to explain the situation. And does anyone know why Misato didn't send someone to retrieve Shinji much earlier than she did? It's not like she didn't know where Nerv was. She should have known Gendo was up to no good.

But 3.0 does have gorgeous visuals and a wonderful score. And it kind of captures the spirit of the final episodes of Eva. So I have very mixed feelings about it. Anno apparently did too. He fell back into depression after making it.

Yeah it was okay, I guess. I don't know, I think it was just hit and miss in places. The fast-tracked introduction of Asuka was fine, I liked the aquarium visit, the Sahalaquiel race was good, with Asuka wrecking the attempt at teamwork, the Zeruel attack was pretty good.

But I'm not sure I like the super-secret berserk mode Mari activated on Unit 02, or that she could so easily pilot Unit 02. I know a lot of people don't like Mari, I'm not opposed to the idea of her character, but I don't think she's been utilised all that well (she served pretty much no purpose in 3).

I feel like the competitive cooking plot between Asuka and Rei could have been something better (it's rehashed from Gunbuster), although I don't know what I would suggest. It's a shame Toji didn't explode in Unit 03, I'm not sure I like how they sorta messed around with the audience on that.

It's a shame Unit 01 going berserk at the end wasn't terrifying like it is in the show. I didn't like the magical new AT-Field arm. I also think the discordant use of a light kid's song for both the Unit 03 fight AND the almost-third impact was a misstep.

I still think the best contribution from Rebuild has been the Ramiel fight in the first movie. They actually improved on the show rather than just making arbitrary differences.

Rebuild of Evangelion 3.0 (2012) - $60 million
One Piece Film Z (2012) - $72 million

We have no idea about the quality or how heavily either film is being marketed. But based on past performances, how do you feel things might play out? Toho has been pushing the Godzilla x Eva angle pretty hard, so I assume they're hoping to draw in some of the Eva crowd.

Japan doesn't care about Godzilla anymore and it's seen as a mockery of otaku. It won't outperform OP and most likely won't draw in too much of the Eva crowd since they generally despise tokushit as being beneath them.

>Heck, the first movie is just the first six episodes of the original tv show.

But still, you don't get that sense of the kind of relationships between characters that made NGE good.

Rei has too much humanity in Rebuild, such that Shinji doesn't really seem as alone, and she doesn't seem so tragically doomed.
His friendships with Toji and Kensuke don't feel as significant.

And it only gets further from that in the second one, and never fully develops the dynamics of Misato, Shinji, Asuka and Kaji's disfunctional "family" that was the heart of NGE

As you say, it's competently made, but it's mostly just boiled down to a bit of a romp about a boy caught up in a creepy conspiracy, surrounded by wacky women, driving a man-made monster. What came before had a lot more soul, and that's why people shit on it.

At least the music is pretty fantastic

>it's a shame Unit 01 going berserk at the end wasn't terrifying like it is in the show.

tell me about it dude, got blindsided by that scene when i first watched EVA on adult swim in the early 2000s

literally had no idea what to think

It's kinda retarded Toho doesn't use him as a "alternate universe" kinda of thing like they did all the time in comic books

Idk why but it has became one of my pet peeves on how lasers can make explosions out of thin air.
I can see it melting things or vaporizing things due to extreme temperatures, but explosions? Nah

>EVA vs Godzilla has to get made, it'd be such a wasted opportunity if they didn't.

A clone of a god vs an overgrown lizard ?
Seems like a waste of time to me

>A clone of a god

Angels themselves aren't gods.
Power of the gods can only be obtained by beings possessing the fruit of life and the fruit of knowledge. Angels and their children had one or the other.

Seele built Evas to create a being that could obtain both, and become a man-made god.

Ugh, it's like you weren't even paying attention to the movie!

A little pessimistic there, don't you think? Godzilla has been in a crunch a few times before. I don't think it's impossible for the franchise to recover. Toho ran him into the dirt with the Heisei and Millennium films. Godzilla (1998) did its share too.

However, now it seems Toho is ready to do things right. They've hired some remarkable talent to help get the franchise back on track. Personal opinions aside, it's undeniable that Rebuild of Evangelion has been an extremely profitable venture. And Shinji Higuchi is considered a modern Japanese special effects wizard. He is responsible for the effects of the Heisei Gamera Trilogy. And also three hundred notable celebrities will be making either a cameo appearance or play a supporting role in Resurgence.

doesn't matter, Godzilla isn't a series built on one timeline/continuity, pretty much every movie has been a reboot since 1999

They always had the rights, because the monster was Godzilla. They just gave a new name to the design and used it in one of their movies as a separate monster, but it's technically still Godzilla within the context of the 98 movie. It later release on home-video carried the official Godzilla stamp, not the Zilla one.

The legal issues surrounding that design are pretty messy.
