While not always the case it's generally true. I think Kubrick's Shining is much better than the book and the shitty telemovie King loved.

I think I'll need to watch some director's commentary or something because I don't really get why Snyder felt the need to change the ending. I get that he loves to try and elevate pop-culture to pop-art by working with allusion and mythology but by removing the pulpier aspects of the story the tone just feels wrong.

I'd say that the adapted version is usually worse than the original.
Things are adapted for 2 reasons:
1. It's easier than telling an original story
2. The original story was really good, and more people will enjoy the adapted version
While you can take a book and run with it, and make something really original and fascinating, 9 out of 10 times the book is going to be better because it was good enough to be adapted.
