Start with humming and going up and down your vocal register. Then start doing that with your voice. Easy way to get differentiation is to try and sing from different 'parts' of your body like your diaphram or chest.
Even just when you're in the shower doing dick all it starts to compound, you'll never really know actual notes without study / teaching, but you can approximate well enough for a layman.
