Despite all the controversy over Fury Road it was still a good movie. A comedy movie that isn't funny won't be good at the end of the day.

Not him, but it was.

It was the culmination of a vision that was nominated for best film.

Faggot.

And despite that a commercial failure

They shouldn't have spent $145M making this movie.

They should have tried to do it with $60-$80M and cut down on the special effects. They wound up looking shit anyway
>>
Fury road was as anti-feminist as films come.
Woman makes plan
It goes wrong
Man fixes things
Woman wants to walk across dried oceans
Man says that's stupid and fixes things

Nope, it'll be lucky to reach 45 million. It's not even projected to make back it's cost of filming and advertising. lol. How are you this delusional?
>>
>>72025613
And every woman that wasn't Furiosa was either worthless or horribly murdered. Even Queen Sarkeesian didn't think it was a feminist film; it had one strong female character who was more of a main character than the titular male character but that doesn't really make it a feminist fantasy.

>145M budget
I'm talking about ghostbusters there

MMFR had a $150M budget, spent another $150M on P&A, and only took in $375M worldwide

The general forumula is that after production costs, P&A, taxes and INTL licensing (up to 50% can be lost here), and all other costs a movie needs to make triple it's budget to be considered a good ROI.

>$300M spent
>$375M brought in
That's a commercial failure

I loved the movie and I'm glad it's critically acclaimed but it didn't perform well monetarily

REMINDER BEFORE THEY CHANGE THIS!!

>As opening day approaches, Feig can’t help but think about the stakes of making a $150 million movie. “A movie like this has to at least get to like $500 million worldwide, and that’s probably low,” he says. “But the thing I care about most is the industry looking for an excuse to say, ‘See, a tentpole can’t be carried by female leads’” — three of whom are over 40. “I cashed in all my chips,” he says. “I had to use every chip to make this happen. And if this doesn’t work, I will probably have to go back to movie jail.”

Since when does a bunch of basement dwellers know better than the people behind it? If they have a target of 50 million domestic, then they have a target of 50 million domestic

Stop trying to use mental gymnastics to say that it isn't somehow their target and needs to make a lot more

>>
>>72026026
UK film critics are general more lenient than US ones
UK moviegoers are less vocal than US ones.

It's safe for studios to premier in Europe because they can keep the ratings high and use them as promotion to try and drum up excitement for the wide release. Then Americans get their hands on it and tear it to shreds
>>
Picturing this is a mid-200m worldwide range movie. That seems about right for the confluence of factors here (whiny feminists turning out in force on one hand, but at the same time it's a tired remake with no positive word of mouth/repeat viewing).

>>72026084
50mil is the target they're hoping to get due to the tracking and circumstances. Doesn't mean it's a good number, especially considering the budget.

Feig threw a temper tantrum and insisted on a reboot because a sequel meant the girls didn't invent the gadgets themselves
>>
>>72026233
I'm look at this and thought to myself "Did Amy Pascal just go to this site go down the line and say MIB and Ghostbusters were successes lets do a reboot of one and have a crossover with 21 Jump Street with the others."

Fuck that! I liked MiB3 so it could have been MiB4!

>>
>>72026511
There was a story that they were changing it to Ghostbusters: Answer The Call as a means to please detractors and get them off their backs but after they got backup from the SJWs and numales they said fuck it and kept it Ghostbusters. They don't want there to be a way to differentiate the two so the masses will be oblivious this isn't a sequel or has zero connection when they pay for their ticket.
>>

Promotion and Advertising

Studios almost religiously spend just as much on P&A as they do on production
>>
>>72026488
>Did Amy Pascal just go to this site go down the line and say MIB and Ghostbusters were successes
That's pretty much the story of how Fant4stic was made. Sony was going down a list of properties they weren't going to have for long and made a movie to keep the rights.
I think Ghostbusters was the same they kept it on the back burner because Harold Ramis had some kind of rights via a contract and once he die they were free to do what ever.
>>
>>72026020
>what even was "feminist" about that movie anyway?

You should have learned by now that pissing babby men will call anything feminist at this point.
>>
>>72026715
They're going to spin it regardless.
The Good Dinosaur flopped (due to poor marketing on Disney's end) and it was still spun when the DVD came around.
>>
>>72026695

MiB3 was underrated! fite me!
>>
>>72026784
Pretty much this.

They'll say they're really happy with the commercial performance and that'll be the end of it. People will argue over whether or not it was profitable enough for a sequel.

Then they'll announce a MIB reboot

Female character saves a bunch of wives. The wives are badasses, too. They meet up with more women who are older and also badass.

That's the extent of the feminism. It was a good movie.

Despite having female leads and a bunch of female characters, the best character was Nux. Unlike the rest, his story and character progression was the best.

Max was boring. Furiosa was boring.

While anons post is inarticulate what he's referring to is true. These type of people who get offended by everything or feel that everything has to change to fit their tastes and their temperaments by orchestrating outrage and using the guise of social justice are terrible manipulators.
It has very little to do with women existing in movies it has to do with them trying to force change for things they have no interest in then not supporting the industries they're effecting. They cry for change in comic books and they don't read them. Marvel is struggling to keep their sales strong. They complain about video games and don't play them. The game companies make these changes for nothing and waste their time and money. Same with movies they don't support a film unless it's like Ghostbusters where they have a dog in the fight. This new rise of the overly sensitive demanding control has to be brought to heel or they won't stop stirring shit then blaming "white men" or what ever else when they don't get their way.1

Hemsworth's character feels like an insult to the original film.

Also, having them "defeat" the original Ghostbuster's logo in the finale was a bit on the nose for how shit this movie is.

>GB'84 - $13,578,151
>4,041,116 people saw GB it's opening weekend

>GB'16 - projected $50M
>needs to sell 4.5 million tickets at $11ea to hit this goal

Seems very unlikely given the mixed reviews and poor word of mouth
>>
>>72028074
>twice the price
speak for yourself

Movie tickets cost fucking $19.50 where I live.

It's fucking atrocious and why no one bothers seeing anything but Marvel movies
>>
>>72028222
No one besides the most delusional think it will get 50 million which is a best case scenario. Sony is projecting around 40 mill that is what I am going with and will even assume it's a bit optimistic.
>>
>>72028222
Even more unlikely because of millennials and overall increased number of competition in the realm of entertainment (Netflix, video games, etc.).
>>
>>72028352
>>72028323
>>72028222
Looking at the original GBs weekends and it's crazy how consistently it held it's +$10M gross for so long.

But then again it makes sense if you dont have a ton of stuff to distract/occupy yourself with and a movie only costs $3-5

>Brian hasn't seen Ghostbusters yet, want to go see it again?

Jesus christ, are you really this dumb or are you just trolling. If I know my company stands to make only $10.00 from a $500.00 investment, I would put out a target of $10.00 as how much I'm expecting to bring in. That doesn't mean it's a fucking sucess for me. That just means I fucking lost a whole lot of money but I can at least recover those $10.00. It could still be better, maybe I recover $15.00, maybe less. Fuck you're stupid.

In 2016, $50m opening weekend for a highly discussed remake of one of the most popular hits of the 1980s is not good.

Star Wars opened to four times that - fuck, it mad more than that on the Friday. Jurassic World btfo of it too.

$50m is fine, but you can bet $ony wanted more than that when they free lit is.

Spielberg's touch of "A boy and his car" lifted it up a whole lot. And seeing Megan Fox for the 1st time.
>>
>>72029031

If Bay had stuck MORE with Spielberg's "a boy and his X" suggestion, the movie (and possibly all that came after it in the franchise) would have been great. But all the pointless, unfunny human characters and subplots, AMERICAFUCKYEAH military masturbation, overproduced CGI, and explosion porn just made it into cinematic junk food.
>>
>>72024941
Whoa! It's going to make it's mediocre projection? You mean, it's still a failer, but less so because it met the lowest of Sony's expecation? Fantastic. Women, we did it again!. We bested those men. We lowered the threshold for success and once again, bested the threshold we set for ourselves. Stand up and be proud!

yeah, pretty much

they had a scene where he stumbles upon a bunch of hot women hosing themselves off, i don't see how that's feminist or sjw at all, it's the kind of shit they'd go nuts about honestly

just having strong females doesn't make it sjw, it's a matter of presentation and the idea behind it. it becomes shitty when it feels forced. like this abortion of a ghostbusters sequel.

With as much marketing and paid shilling that's being put into this film, $50 million should be seen as an embarassment, especially when it suffers a huge drop the second week.

>it's in the same company as Green Lantern, The Great Gatsby, Independence Day: Resurgence, Pacific Rim and Warcraft

Wow, what confidence that inspires.
>>
>>72033473
Not to mention, unlike those movies, it doesn't have China to save its ass.

>>
>>72026020
literally that there was a strong woman as a main character. the other women were utterly useless and would have died if max and nux hadn't been there to save them.

max beat the shit out of all of them and would have left them for dead if he could have started the truck. the female gang dies within like 15 minutes, all to stock standard un-named characters. the strong woman would have literally died if max hadn't given her blood. they only make it out alive because nux sacrifices himself. it was actually a smart move by having a strong woman lead to mask all of the apparent "men saving the useless women" stuff that was actually happening in the movie.
>>
>>72028825
the war never ends

>>72028587
no, we won this time. at worst, it was a draw.

sony is jap and japs have very high standards for success. businesses don't greenlight something to make "a little money," they want big hits. the original pitch must have either been very well played or whoever greenlit it was incompetent or just figured it was impossible to fuck up a sequel to such a beloved franchise.

by the looks of things, they're barely going to hit their target, if they even manage that. this shit's dead and sony knows not to greenlight something like this again.

they might find someone else who greenlights their stuff, but it won't be ghostbusters since sony owns the rights to that. sony's probably going to fire some folks for managing to bungle something that should have been easy money.

Yep, Sony's marketing worked.

We complained but Sony controlled the narrative because it commands the mainstream media.

If you want to start winning, you need to manipulate the mass media.

Hard to do because the media is controlled by the same companies that produce these movies.

And that is how a shit 4/10 comedy came to earn $50 million.
