The force awakens is an lazy mess of things happening just because, ala JJ SonofAbraham. The character of maz was integral to the bridging of the different halves of the movie, but no one bothered to do screen tests, and they ended up cutting out everything that they possible could without leaving the movie with a gigantic and unironic plot hole at the last minute because it didn't work. That's not even meming, that's on the record shit that happened.
It wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it lacked any kind of soul or spark of originality. And JJ has absolutely no sense of scale or time, both of which are kind of important in a space opera. This is a galaxy spanning story that has everything happening within sight of everything else over the course of a weekend.
