HBO is looking for a new fantasy series to adapt once GoT is over and you are in charge of picking which one it is. Which one do you pick?
The Dwarves desu
>>71983069
Gormenghast
>>71983069
Nothing, because fantasy is gay
>>71983069
its not very good but I think its the type of stuff HBO would love reworking.
>>71983069
Bakker's Second Apocalypse series, preferably the first trilogy.
I'd sell my left nut for adaptation.
>>71983102
Been done

The next most reddit fantasy series, after ASOIAF, would be wheel of time or malazan
>>71983287they made a womb of me
>>71983069
OP's sex life
Ring of Nibelung adapted into a movies would be interesting.
I choose Vlad Taltos series. Mobster assassin in a fantasy setting that gets into turf wars and set to assassunate sorcorers. Shit is so cash
I started reading the first wheel of time book because I listened to /tv. 900 pages of boring shit with completely one dimensional characters. Makes ASOIAF look like art. Fuck you /tv.
>>71983365I don't remember that. Is it from the last book? Waiting for the ebook to be released
>>71983349
Malazan is pretty damn well unadaptable. Wheel of Time would be really hard too. Level and frequency of magic is just too high.
BERSERK
The Silmarillion Anthology Miniseries
Too bad Christopher is a huge weener.
The witcher is the only decent choice, really. There's just no contest. It's simply the smartest take on the genre.
>>71983420
Wheel of Time is a slog, some parts are really really good but a lot of it is weird filler and the author inputting his own really weird ideas about men and women into a book series. Malazan is a different beast, best fantasy series I've read. First book is awful though, written a long time before the next 9. Not even a bad idea to start on book 2.
>>71983486
ayyyyyyy
The games are much better than the books. That says something
>>71983518
They're good series adaptation material, though. No 'deeper' message that can be botched. As long as they keep the charm of the novels, especially the short stories, and cast the characters right, it's pretty much guaranteed to be a very enjoyable tv-series.
now that we've realized that book series don't work as movies but they do as TV shows i would say Harry Potter
also, i don't know any other fantasy series
>>71983510
I couldn't stop thinking of how autistic the author must be because every single female character-even all the background characters- are super stronk sassy women that all the men are subordinate to because they are all huge betas.
>>71983069
if they were clever, they'd do something fun and out-there; different from GoT
Pic related is the only answer
>>71983674
Agree, but it's not the only answer, Myth Adventures is also viable.
>>71983445
Bookzz.org
Never pay for a book again
>>71983069
They're already doing the name of the wind.
Otherwise, Dune would be lovely.
I'll settle for Conan the barbarian.
>>71983204
Solid pick right here though. It's BSF but would be awesome on tv. Fantasy Sharpe would be really fun.
The wheel of time :^)
>>71983608
If you could get jk to sign away the writing to someone else it'd perfect. Universe is cool but her characters and plotlines are just too shit.
The important question is:who do we cast as Croaker?
>>71983069
I think this is the best choice. I don't have anything to add, but just want to talk about First Law
>>71983840
Benioff and Weiss are good at making filler not seem filler
Would be amazing if done right.
>>71983069
MISTBORN NIGGAS
Too bad SyFy is already adapting it. It's going to be terrible.
>>71983089
Thats the one by Marcus Heitz right? Aren't they making a game of it?
>>71984014
Forgot image.
>>71983921
I just want my medieval Gettysburg.
The heroes> Best Served Cold>Last Arguments of Kings> Before they are Hanged>Red Country> The Blade Itself.
Redwall.
>>71983952
Literally impossibleI'd watch if it was David Lynch with a Swans soundtrack tho
>>71983952
Totally unfilmable. They even gave up on adapting it as a graphic novel.
>>71983069
It's more historical fiction than fantasy, but HBO should adapt The Accursed Kings. It's like GoT but good.
>>71983952
>>71983860
these were the first two that came to mind
Neuromancer. It'd also be very appropriate/timely.
the forgotten realms drizzt series because it's the only one i've read
but it would need a ridiculous budget to be watchable
REEEEEEEEEEEEE I don't want my stupid fantasy books to be adapted REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeee
Is Abercrombie's stuff worth getting into? I've had The Blade Itself sitting on one of my bookshelves for years.
>>71984083
I don't like graphic novels, but I would've read that. I'm interested in how they would picture the world.
The Demon Cycle books. Though I hated the last one.
Gor
The lies of locke lamora is good
>>71984068
Oh shit I'm sold, start on Book of the new Sun?
>>71984249
I didn't really like it. Reads like a young adult novel. None of his characters are really likeable or even interesting, save for one.
Read Bakker instead, if you're looking for gritty fantasy.Prince of Nothing is the best fantasy trilogy from the past decade
>>71984249
First book is decent but the rest are far better. There's a huge jump in quality from 1 to 2 and I consider book 5 to be among the best fantasy novels ever written.
Wild Cards is fantasy enough right?
Das Kapital is a pretty good fantasy book. HBO wouldn't have much trouble finding a fan base.
This or the Rigante series directed by prime peter jackson would be god tier
>>71984422
Say what you want about his sycophants, but ol' Uncle Karl was right about quite a few things.
Elric.
>>71984184
This is an amazing series. Especially that book. Though it will never work because either they speak french and no one will watch it or they speak English and it's a complete joke.
It needed to be a show, but they had to go and ruin it
Y the Last Man plus it's already storyboarded
>>71984480
>nobody will watch a show with French dialog and English subtitles
Why? Is reading that much of a hassle?
>>71984513
Blame King. He's the one that okayed everything we've seen and heard about the film thus far.
Didn't he hate Kubrick's Shining for deviating from the book? Boggles the mind.
>>71984480
>>71984184
Also to my knowledge there are already two french tv series adatption.
>>71984443
Jackson is a shell of his former self. Legend shouldn't be an action movie; it's about a fading old man going to his last battle. I don't really know who I would give it to.
>>71983069
>HBO is looking for a new fantasy series to adapt once GoT
No they're not. Fantasy is over for HBO.
>>71984542
>Why? Is reading that much of a hassle?
Do your actually need to ask this? We're talking about something that replaces GoT for fuck's sake.
Also yeah Americans most likely won't watch it.
Gentleman Bastards.
>>71984335
>Prince of Nothing is the best fantasy trilogy from the past decade
That's not Stormlight Archive.
>>71984552
I know it has an adaptation already, but it looks cheesy. If you put some of that HBO money behind the series you can get the GOAT tv show.
>>71984581
thanks for playing the game, raging autist-san
Gentlemen Bastards, Stormlight, Dresden Files, or Malazan
>>71984642
Nah. Better let french people do it and target french audiences with it. Americans are too dumb especially GoT viewers.
>>71984545
Kubrick's Shining deviated from the book and tried to have a different meaning and it threw King's story out the window is why I think he hated it.
So far the biggest problem I see with the movie is the character design, and Roland's race change.
If they can leave it with only those few changes it seems it can be okay
Yurope
>>71984735
>So far the biggest problem I see with the movie is the character design, and Roland's race change.
I don't even have an issue with the race change, but yeah, the character design is fucking terrible. Especially Flagg,
>>71983069
Discworld.
>>71983808
not who you quoted but thanks, very nice site
I would much prefer something original, otherwise Stormlight Archive no doubt.
When the Stormlight Archive series is finished (Can't see Sanderson finishing it for at least another 10 years) it would be an amazing tv series.
The only issue here is that if I've read something I know how it goes and TV producers will inevitably dumb down the plot for casuals or shrink the story down character and location wise which will really ruin it for me....much like ASOIAF has been ruined
>>71983069
I know it's sci-fi and not fantasy, but a Foundation series would be pretty neat.
How about they fucking finish Rome instead?
animorphs
>>71985229
>Finish Rome
>Pullo and Vorenus take part in Roman history up until the fall of the western empire in 476 A.D.
>>71984780
I don't have a problem with the race change either except for the fact that for the second book the conflict will have to change between him and Odetta.
The character design though, Roland looks like a fucking hobo with guns and all this heavy ass equipment
>>71983860
Came here to post this.
Seriously Black Company would be sweet as fuck. It's basically like Generation Kill, but from the point of view of mercenaries putting down a rebellion on behalf of a Dark Empire.
Plus The Taken were all seriously scary dudes. Although The Limper does get used way too much.
>>71983089
>>71984037
Markus Heitz is one of my favourite authors and the dwarves is an amazing series. As long as Dabid and Dan don't get their filthy hands on it, pls HBO
>>71983349
>wheel of time less reddit than ASOIAF
You literally have never read a book in your life, have you?
>>71985308
it would attract the same manchild demographic as GOT that's for sure
>>71983420
This was basically my experience, except I actually really liked ASOIAF, at least the first three books. WoT was the most generic fantasy schlock I could imagine outside of a Drizzt novel, I couldn't believe it's so well-regarded. People say it gets better, but I'm not bothering.
>>71983069
Drizzet, and all the Dark Elves are played by asian guys in blackface.
>>71983420
I started reading the wheel of time series as a kid, but I stopped after the second book gave me weird feelings I didn't understand. (I popped my first boner at the lesbian magic slavery part).

He is allegedly trying to stick to a schedule of a Stormlight release every other year so with 8 more planned books yeah we're look at around 16 years until its done as the most generous estimate.
Malazan or Kingkiller Chronicles.

I know it doesn't excuse his behaviour before, but after the Hobbit, can you blame the guy?
>Only way for your favourite fantasy novels or series to work on screen is if they turn it into a low brow action flick, completely removing all subtly and marketing it towards normalfags because of the faux nerd trend being popular
Now I know how sci-fi fans feel, they must hate the fact Abrams is ruining everything for them.

>>71984327
Good choice. Wouldn't mind the Red Knight books too.
>>71983069
They missed the boat. The only fantasy that is adaptable to a somewhat good tv series has already been taken. Everything else is just a tropefest that even the plebs at Burlington Bar would cringe at.
The Eoin Colfer Artemis books.
The concept is funny, there's plenty of action and twists and the female elf character can easily be turned into sjw bait, even more than lady kitchenborn...
>>71983860
He's supposed to look like a grizzly fat old pedophile by the end, so maybe Jim carry if he gains eighty pounds

>>71985800
>people say it gets better
No, it actually gets worse.
>>71989466
The premise is a bit too weird for normalfags but considering it's hbo and the gto successor they'd stay long enough to get hooked.
It'd be a gigantic success and I'm sure hbo or others have considered it at some point but I think the rights lie with some big studio, actually...
>>71989466
And you'd better hope it leaves it at Book 3.
He was never particularly subtle about his environmental leanings, but he goes from obvious subtext to ripping out your eyes and forcibly ramming his opinions down the sockets.
I wonder how people would react to khepri sex scenes.
>>71989527
Yes, it's pretty cringey at times and the lore is not consistent at all. Just like that other thing that turned into a world-wide phenomenon and made 100s of millions of dollars...
>>71983069
Something I hate cause they'll inevitably fuck it up.
>>71983606
assuming you read it in english this is understandable but i think so much already got lost from the polish original that it is a bad idea.I actually think the english material is really really mediocre as so much of the charm comes from sapkowski playing with the polish language. double translated material (original->english->hollywood) is a bad bad idea
>>71984735
>Kubrick's Shining deviated from the book and tried to have a different meaning
Kubrick's Shining had no meaning.
>>71989541
The first book of WoT is the worst of the first six or so because it's deliberately written to be so generic. Things get more interesting later.
>>71983069
Oglaf.
I tell them that fantasy is small time after GoT, and that they should blow TWD out of the water with a series based on WWZ.
Like it should have been done
>>71989717
>>71989619
Except that GoT has much more mature themes.
It's still cringy, but at least appeals to adult audiences much more than le 10 year old super genius haxx0r kid who likes fairies and his gay black butler.
>>71989668
The first book wasn't too great but the filler ones in the middle were mind raping trash, it gets worse
>>71989668

If you count anime schoolyard drama and stupid bitches gossiping interesting.
>>71983069
Mortal Engines, municipal darwinism bitches
>>71989573
Depends really, they could potentially do something to make the Khepri look less alien, try and actually make them attractive looking.
Personally though I'd probably just introduce the main character and his girlfriend in a sex scene. Camera pans in from the skyline through their bedroom window, it's dark inside but a candle lights the unmistakable shape of a couple in flagrante. The man is slightly chubby and hairy, on his back on the bed. The girl is slim and athletic looking, her body grinding away on top of him, her head lost in the shadows near the ceiling. Angle change, looking at the scene from over the man's shoulder, his hands are round her waist. He reaches one hand up to grab her breast. A sound, like crickets perched just outside the window. Their lovemaking becomes more passionate. He reaches the other hand up to grab her head and pull her towards him, to kiss her as they both climax. Her face is illuminated by the candlelight. She's got a fucking Insect Head! Holy fuck! What!? And he's kissing her, all tongues and mandibles! *barf*
>>71989090
Does that mean he will be raped by a white nu-male Donovan?
all The Witcher books.
>>71989847
It gets better and then it gets worse. Books like 8-10 or so are the worst.
Riftwar
A faithful adaptation of the early Seeker books.
>>71983860
Came here to post this.
The more important question though is:Who would you cast as Lady?
>>71987170
Holy shit, that would be fun as fuck.
>>71983069
It wasn't much of a series, but the "Magic Kingdom for Sale... SOLD!" books would make a great jumping off point for fun adventures.
The Legend of Drizzt
>>71984443
The Jerusalem Man books could work. Maybe not on HBO though.
American Tabloid/ Cold Six Thousand
>>71990074
So in the end, it gets worse, like I said
Has anyone here every read any Piers Anthony sagas?
I think the Xanth series would be pretty cool. Basically everyone in this fantasy world has their own unique ability or power. Could be cool.
>>71984584
this would be so good
maybe like 1.5hr eps with 3 per season, like sherlock
The edge chronicles
They could give it a pirates of the carribean vide. It's got lots of characters, sideplots and soap opera twists. Also it's litereally got the word "edge" in the title so it's perfect for the millenial generation.
>>71984327

Kingkiller Chronicle and pander to the dr. who crowd. It might catch on.
>>71984628
I'd give anything for a Stormlight Archive series but it would NEED to be animated. it's over the top anime as fuck, and there's no other way to do justice to the spren on a tv budget
>>71991454
That's incorrect though, the third book was actually better than the second.
>>71983669

>>71983069
They'll like this one, the main character is a bastard of a royal family (His family's sigil is a stag) who has the ability to communicate with and transfer his mind into animals, his companion is a large wolf. He's trained as an assassin and lives in the capital of of six "duchies" in a keep that overlooks the sea, a lot of political intrigue and double crossing goes on there. Dragons are brought back to life and one of the biggest threats is people being turned into mindless zombies. It came out a year before game of thrones and martin wrote the foreword, so it could be a hit
>>71990123
I'd say Gemma Arterton. She's got that raw primal sex appeal that The Lady is supposed to have, but can also look very regal and commanding.
I might just be saying because I just watched Byzantium a few days ago though.
Horus Hersey Warhammer 40k.
>>71991493

I would love to see an animated Wheel of Time Series. That way you could do the full range of characters, sets, and plot without getting stuck in the dumpster fire D&D created for themselves.
The Dragonbone Chair might be good as a short series. But HBO only cares about tits & blood, with SJW pandering to get the TV critics to call it "grown up".

there isn't a single fantasy book that isn't like this today. even if there was, every subsequent book in the series will turn it into this anyway over time. i haven't seen one exception yet.
>City suspended by chains over an Abyss a God lives at the bottom of
>Serial killer Angel
>Order of religious Assassins
>A regular human serial killer who is collecting his victims blood to try and become immortal
>Grizzled old man searching for his missing daughter
Would make a good mini-series if they can get the look of Deepgate right. Probably not such a good idea to bother adapting any of the other books in the series though, since the story goes off the rails and travels to weird locations like Hell itself.
>>71992442
>So your dad is some kind of big shot?
No he's just a sniper (in my neighbor's words). He got into the real estate game in a shitty neighborhood in my city just in time to reap great dividends for a small investment, and he loves stories so he's collected (and lost) some rights since he decided to try being a movie producer. the only thing that's really moving right now is a documentary about Robert Johnson though.
I helped him "snipe" a story once, too. I read this Rolling Stone article and told him to get the rights, he did, then the next day a huge studio tried to buy them and found out my dad had them.

I like Black Company as an idea because you don't have to go crazy over the top with it, just couple of mass fights when shit goes down. Company is never really the source of great sorcery so it wouldn't be a constant drain on the budget like dragons or something.

Wheel of Time is already being made into a tv series. They announced it back in May.
I can't think of any series that I would want made. Honestly most fantasy is awful as a genre. GoT I actually read and enjoyed, which is unusual.
I would like to see The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R Donaldson made into an HBO series.

The Edge Chronicles. Animated in it's original style. We capitalize on the growing market for more serious western animation projects and bill it as a more family oriented show with appeal for animation nerds, fantasy fans and stoners looking for something trippy.
Trying to recreate Game of Thrones is fucking stupid. Making a more unique, quieter project is more likely to recapture the success.

I wish they would focus more on Company shenanigans before Croaker became the big boss.
I would have loved a novel or two more about all the things they experienced while in service to all kinds of different employers, the big story arc from the later books didn't really interest me.
fantasy """"literature"""" is garbage made for kids
HBO shouldn't adapt any more of these childish entertainment

LOTR is legit literature and a classic because of how much it shaped modern pop culture
stuff like warcraft and warhammer wouldnt have existed if it wasnt for LOTR

No

Drizzt could work just fine, problem is Salvatore couldn't write the damn trilogy to save his life. In more competent hands the setting and premise would absolutely work.

Eva Green.
For something less predictable, Garrett P.I.
>The novels are written in a film noir-esque style, containing elements of traditional mystery and detective fiction, as well as plenty of dialogue-based humor. The Garrett P.I. novels are set in a fantasy universe; the protagonist Garrett, during his adventures throughout his home city of TunFaire and across Karenta and the Cantard, meets elves, vampires, centaurs, trolls, gods, wizards, witches and more. Unlike most fantasy series, the Garrett P.I. novels focus more on the detective aspects of the story and less on the fantastic and magical aspects.
I could see it working as a mini-series.

>Blame King
Look, I'm far from his biggest fan, but what did you expect him to do, come out and say the main character should stay white? In 2016?
The only reason people here can say negative things about recasting whites as blacks, forced diversity, blackwashing cannonically caucasian characters, or casting the bad guys as all white males is that we are anonymous, you can't criticize any of that in real life without being called a super-KKK-worse-than-Hitler-racist. For any public figure it means end of career, dropped sponsors, boycotts, protestors at your house.

Aubrey/Maturin
Start around the time of Post Captain with Sophie and Diana on shore, Jack chasing Spanish Treasure ships and Stephen going full espionage. Even with the needed changes of focus and added material, I'd still be great.

Wait, is that supposed to be a bad thing?

>Though last I heard Channing Tatum was cast in the Forever War movie, so I'm guessing there wont be a TV show. I.e all hope is lost
Wait, it's actually HAPPENING? Well shit.

The story and world are great in their own right and adaptable, but it would also lose so much cool stuff just by being in a visual medium.

The Dark Tower or Flatlands just because that would be hysterical.
