On one hand, I do get what she's saying. There IS an oversaturation of "clappy humor" present out there these days, a lot of it being political in nature.
On the other hand, a lot of the greatest comedians were the kind that made you think AND laugh. George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, hell even Robin Williams's standup specials. They didn't just go for cheap laughs, a joke that has some real wit behind it are the ones that get remembered.

Its because Ernie Hudson was never supposed to be there, it was supposed to be Eddie Murphy. He wasn't a token black character, he was going to be a part of the group in the same capacity as Akroyd, Murray, and Ramis. Eddie Murphy couldn't do it due to scheduling conflicts, so they wrote most of his parts out and made his character a late addition who was just there for the paycheck, while keeping the equality and comradery originally written into Murphy's character

Cleverness and insight is a byproduct of an authentic comic sharing a unique perspective. Having the ability to articulate the absurd and find humor in the tragic is what makes comedy special.
