He's become a Joker-tier edgy teen meme at this point. The only way you could do a K'toolho movie at this point is to throw him in with the others in a quip filled action movie where they save the world.

It's been done already. black and white, silent with title cards, awesome soundtrack, faithful script, charming miniatures. It's perfect. Watch it and know that a major studio will never top this fucking indie film made on $50,000.

Yeah, when someone says they love Lovecraft, you can measure how pleb they are by how many more words come out of their mouth before they mention Cthulhu.

I mean, the Cthulhu Mythos is what really put Lovecraft on the map. Before that he probably had 20 readers from his Weird Tales publications. I don't immediately judge people who instantly bring up tCoC when they talk about Lovecraft, but usually it ends up being literally the only thing about his work that they know. Then I judge them.

>producer needs to understand the material
>writer needs to understand the material
>director needs to understand the material
You're never going to get all three of those on board for cosmic horror. Even if they did.
>the audience needs to understand the material
Cosmic horror would best be used a candy shell coating for a main audiovisual genre, much like what the writers for Almost Human did with futurism/scifi.
If you're really "lucky", someone will manage to mash all the surface layer ideas of the Lovecraftian mythos to make a mindless, soulless pile of shit like the Hackowskis did for cyberpunk with the Matrix.

lovecraft is inherently un-cinematic. the closest cinematic corollary to the way he writes would be like a fake ken burns documentary or something. something like the hellstrom chronicle but with occult shit instead of insects.

A Record of Sweet Murder, Koji Shiraishi's (of Grotesque and Noroi fame) first film with a sizable budget.
It is also latest entry of films where he utilizes eldritch beings with unspeakable power. Though in this film we are presented with a far different side to these entities, mostly due to it being an overall dramatic character piece with an almost romance flavor (as close to romance as a man who has made his career through mockumentary horrors and body horror/gore porn/rape movies.)
The other entries being Occult and Cult.
Occult presents these beings as partaking, deep in the background of the narrative, in an interdimensional jihad which has begun to leak upon the Earth.
Cult presents similar entities engaging in sectarian and subversive activities.

Two of those movies have subs.
Record of Sweet Murder is in both Japanese and Korean speak, so likely it will never be subbed in our lifetime.
>>
>>71934265
Jaws style. Only show shadows and hints of it. The primary antagonists should be cult members trying to bring him back to life.

Have the story be described by a professor from the Miskatonic University. Have it done like how Dilios in 300 tells it. Played straight, but incredibly too fantastical to be completely believed.

Merkel is that Captain that promised us to revive our fishing grounds, but we have to sacrifice our culture in order to do so. What is happening with islam here is almost literally what happened with the Deep Ones and the Order of Dagon.

Like first it's just trading favours. Then it's more or less hidden coexistence. Then it becomes mainstream. Then it's forced upon you and I end up being a fucking drunk on /pol/ trying to explain some fucking liberal from the states why Islam is bad.
>>
Outside of the technical inaccuracies regarding U boats having windows and such, I see no reason why a The Temple film couldn't work. Outside of the initial skirmishes with ships and the diving sections (which could be done with scale models and a big fish tank), the whole thing takes place on a single set and the story doesn't feature any "indescribable" or "eldritch" elements that might be hard to visualize.

Are we too far in the modern age for Cosmic Horror? We peeked through Hubble and Chub Niggurah isn't out there.

It worked back then because scientific discoveries weren't as vast as today's.
>>
>>71936135
>giant unspeakable all powerful horrors aren't actually real
Well fuck me sideways anon.
Still. It doesn't change a fact that we are just atoms in the game of stars.
>>
>>71936341
But that's not horrifying. Black Science Man isn't crying that we should be afraid of space, since we're made of stardust. There is no urgency, no "oh shit our souls are going to be eaten guys". Even hurricanes and global warming and black holes aren't that frightening since it's a part of nature with explainable natural laws.

Cosmic horror is beyond understanding and absolutely horrifying. Nothing in this universe warrants such terror. We are too educated about the knowns and the unknowns gets smaller and smaller.
>>
>>71933507
I don't know. Let me just check the previous 100 threads we've had about the exact same topic this year so far.
>>
>>71936484

Maybe the real horror is that space is pretty boring and there's no unknowable cosmic beings out there waiting to be discovered.

Well, if Koji wrote all the Korean lines with direct translations, that's possible.

But at this point in time Worst Korean speak is doggerel and prone to fad slang that comes and goes as the seasons change. Would require a lot of continuous human input.

I would say Shadows Over Innsmouth is probably the best Lovecraftian movie to adapt. It's longer than most of his stories, so more material to adapt, it has more action segments for the average audience, and does a good job of easing into the mythos, rather than smacking them over the head with the high concept stuff.
>>
>>71938335

It was a valiant effort, but on the whole it was too amateurish to wholly succeed in coming off as an authentic silent film experience. As much as I love the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society and as much as I'm sympathetic to low budget independent efforts like these, If you're going to do a project based on such a strong gimmick, you better do it right or otherwise the whole thing crumbles.

>>71933986
This would be the best way to handle a modern Call of Cthulhu film at least, other than attempting to make a more successful silent film adaption.
The modern crew finds late Francis Wayland Thurston's account of George Gammell Angell's notes on the incident, who seem to have themselves diapered.
Intrigued, the documentary crew sets out to check the validity of that account by other means, and finds more than they bargained for. We visit Arkham Massachusetts, Miskatonic University, get a more detailed account of what the New Orleans police seemed to be up against at the time, traces of what happened to that Cthulhu cult, visit Norway and even travel to certain coordinates.
>>
>>71939041
I like Dagon, but it isn't a faithful adaption, nor does it make the best of the material.
>>
>>71939708
Yeah true.
I liked the hotel scenes in the beginning a lot tho.
>>
Fuck cthulu

>I wanna see a movie about Yig.
>>
A lovecraftian movie without seeing any monsters, just the reaction to it would be great, but it would fall on the actors shoulders to make it or break it
>>
i think the moral of the story is that a "lovecraftian" film doesn't appear financially viable to studios
>can't rely on most famous icon of his work
>can't rely on badass summer blockbuster sfx
>can't rely on big name actors, they'd have to use actually talented ones
i'm not saying it wouldn't make for good movies. i'm saying hollywood and the majority of the movie-going public don't like that kinda shit.
