when I was a kid, the scene that just destroyed me was the ventilation one, where dallas is in the shafts and is facing the wrong direction with only the flamethrower for light

People were expecting a horror movie or an action movie like the 1st and 2nd, instead they were greeted with a drama with a weak plot. What they should have done is pulled back the arrival of Weyland Yutani to much earlier in the movie.
0:00) ripley's escape pod arrives and she finds herself in the monastery-like prison colony, characters and setting introduced without dragging it on
0:20) a wild alien appears and eats prisoners, Ripley is all "I know what it is", it takes another death for them to take her seriously and the prisoners have to fend for themselves for a while
0:40) Weyland Yutani arrives, we see WY and their commandos trying to catch the thing with prisoners supporting them, they fail
0:55) Ripley discovers she has a queen inside her, the shill prison captain guy finds out and he snitches, WY tries to lure Ripley with the promise of taking it out but she discovers they just want the queen and she flees, having gained the respect of the inmates through their trials and tribulations they help her escape
1:00) as WY chases Ripley the alien views them as a threat to the queen and the commandos have to retreat
1:10 Ripley offers to pretend she wants to give up to WY and make it look like the commandos are attaking her to lure the alien out, the inmates will then pour molten lead over it
1:15) final action scene,xenomorph is kill, ripley jumps into lava
