The WB was trying to make the next Simpsons in the hopes that it'd do for them what it did for Fox, but then they chickened out when they saw how much it cost.
Didn't help that Mission Hill didn't appeal to as many people as The Simpsons did (far fewer early 20s yuppies than middle class families in America) or that they gave up on it after two episodes.
