Critical of Malick and Tarkovsky Edition
.
>Will To the Wonder--or TO THE WONDER, as the film's end credits have it--finally dispel the aura of reverence that has settled over the cinema of Terrence Malick? The late creation of an artist can act as an alembic, concentrating and thereby heightening the qualities of his former work, Robert Bresson's L'Argent (1983) being only the most imposing example. And To the Wonder, like Andrei Tarkovsky's Nostalghia (1983) and The Sacrifice (1986) (both of which Malick has drawn from, particularly in 2011's Tree of Life), distills all that is intolerable in its maker's films. Ironically, To the Wonder is positioned as a departure, the first in Malick's oeuvre, aside from a few uneasy sequences in The Tree of Life, to be set in the present day. That apartness--Terry Does Contemporary--serves to reveal that Malick's stylistic traits, previously identified as auteurist signatures, appear too often tics and affectations. What Malick's disciples praise as his ambition and sincerity increasingly registers as feigned naivete, an untoward belief that his fervent romanticism can renew such exhausted tropes as a van Gogh field of sunflowers, a Milton tree of life, a Gauguin South Sea paradise. The unfortunate effect of To the Wonder is to cast a retrospective pall over the director's work, to underscore the tendency in his earlier films to banal symbolism, manufactured rapture, and middlebrow aestheticism.

The main theme of Malick's films on spiritual dematerialism is not eschatological, but a phenomenological ontology. Thus he implies that we have to choose between predialectic construction and deconstructivist neodialectic theory, essentially Heideggerian as seen in the concept of Dasein. The subject is interpolated then into a cinematic dematerialism that includes spirituality as a whole. But if the Kierkegaardian worldview holds, we have to choose between the cultural paradigm of expression and atomism. In Malick's own "The Concept of Horizon in Husserl and Heidegger" he says that "dread marks the ‘collapse of the world’”. Inherent in this is how the function of Lebenswelt (translated by Malick as "world of life") operates in all his films, chiefly in Days of Heaven and The Tree of Life. We see a phenomenological approach to the world showing a cinematic logic that presupposes a strucutral constraint in rootedness, another intentionality central to his filmography and philosophy. Because "metaphysical comfort" is not an object of temporality per se, but rather an aspect of automatic condition, as suggested by Cavell. Hermeneutic interpretations are also apparent in his post-hiatus movies; in fact the interchangeable subjectivities are but another representation of Husserl's and Wittgenstein's "form of life". As his academic hero Heidegger succintly noted, "freedom is the ‘abyss’ of Dasein, its groundless or absent ground". This is essentially the thesis operating in Malick's films.

The opening scene of The Dark Knight Returns, sometimes known as "Bane on Plane," is generally considered to be a variant of surrealism or Dadaism, usually with existential or postmodern undertones related to collapse of meaning and the visceral absurdity of confusion in a symbolic order. On this reading, the scene is designed to evoke a kind of uncanny valley effect in the viewer by presenting him with what is ostensibly an incredibly conventional narrative and semiotic holism - an American action caper, constructed so prototypically from cliches and familiar devices that even the exciting "reveal" of Bane's identity has its anagnorisis and payoff botched well before its presentation as dramatic climax - but subtly and systemically undermining the possibility of semiotic stability throughout the scene, and thereby sabotaging the possibility of the viewer's fusion with the film's semiotic horizon. The experience of watching Bane on Plane is one of profound unease and even dissociation, as the viewer continually tries to assemble coherent meanings, motives, and purposes from a train of malformed tropes, allegories, and metaphors; narratological intuition continually fails to discover any implicit humanity in the behaviour of the actors. The mind reflexively brackets the scene as likely to admit of little variation in its seemingly familiar, even monolithic tropes, but is continually surprised to find that near every trope is "misbehaving." Where at first a single puzzle piece does not "fit" with its puzzle, it is quickly realised that none of the pieces fit; and that this, perhaps, is not a puzzle at all. When asked whether the work of Foucault and Deleuze on the epistemic experience of schizophrenia influenced his choices in his role as Bane, Tom Hardy declined to comment, but referenced Foucault on the discursive constitution of the author-function.

“Art is intrinsically meaningless,” says Ben Affleck. The primary theme of BvS' analysis of Sontagist camp is a mythopoetical totality. The characteristic theme of the works of Snyder is the common ground between society and language. But the premise of dialectic superheroism holds that the establishment is capable of social comment. The subject is interpolated into a social realism that includes narrativity as a whole.
“Society is unattainable,” says Kal-El. It could be said that Luthor uses the term ‘neomaterial desituationism’ to denote not sublimation, but presublimation. If social realism holds, the works of Snyder are an example of purposeful superhero movies, also known as "capekino."

In a sense, Marveldrones promote the use of postdeconstructive objectivism to attack capekino. The subject is contextualised into a neomaterial desituationism that includes reality as a reality.
But dialectic superheroism suggests that culture serves to entrench outmoded, elitist perceptions of capeshit. Terrio uses the term ‘neomaterial desituationism’ to denote a self-supporting totality.

This is correct, but there's more to it. Consummate professionalism causes people to explicitly act like the bottom section, but privately all the other feelings dominate, which is also useless. You should heat the way film school students talk discuss one another's work.

Also, the very bottom left can be as superficial as the bottom right can be sycophantic.

Cinematography = Presentation with high value of aesthetics, lightning, mise en scene, every visual aspect rendered to perfection
Filmography = Still ambitious, creative - but not as well executed as cinematography and with a bit less depth
Movietography = The middleground between Filmography and Flicktography. Motivated by profit.
Flicktography = Standard filming. No real thought process into the presentation, just a tool for the movie's story to progress. Made for the basest, profit-based reasons.

Is this accurate?

Yep, it's a piece of shit. Frankly the most anti-Male flm I've seen in years. If you're male? Having a bunch of Lefty Hollywood Social Justice Warriors attack you for two hours may well not necessarily be the best use of your money. Leaving aside that the cast positively grates. Oh and they kill the ghosts, not contain them. Watching a variation on 'Mr.Staypuft' having his dick shot off with proto-packs at the end? Hmm, wonder what the producers were trying to say there? The end promises a sequel. I don't think so.

He's probably the most intelligent and cogent critic of Malick I've come across so yes, I did quote him if not exactly to troll to at least offer a contrary opinion.

Heres his best of the nineties list:

Histoire(s) du Cinéma—Jean-Luc Godard Figure(s) of the Decade—Abbas Kiarostami & Jean-Luc Godard Ten Best (alphabetical): Flowers of Shanghai, Histoire(s) du Cinéma, The Last Bolshevik, Nouvelle Vague, The Quince Tree Sun, Sicilia!, Taste of Cherry, Valley of Abraham, Van Gogh, Vive l'amour

>I would like to address one thing, my absence over the past few months on Letterboxd. On New Years Day I decided to delete my first Letterboxd account because I wanted to restart my film journey. I lost the spark I had for films, and I felt like I got that spark back. I said to myself though "If I want to restart, I need to make a new account." So I did. And I was getting really successful at it. I was so happy with where I was going with my film journey. Then all of sudden.... the spark was gone again. I honestly don't know what happened. I'm sorry that I just gave up on Letterboxd for a while. I am now having that spark again, and it time to get back to work! I will be trying to review a movie every single day, and I hope you all will join me once again on my journey. Thank you for your time. Oh and I'm using the four Star system from now on.
