Basically it's tragedy stacked on top of tragedy, each one being worst than the next. Contrived crazy woman plot that takes up like 80% of the movie and is dumb from the get go, gets solved the obvious (obvious is a great word for this movie by the way) way way too late to matter. Main character and a few pals say fuck it, let's risk death and not wait it out; get in a car and drive. So the car runs out of gas. Uh oh. Well, good thing the main character has a gun. But it has four bullets and there are five people! Uh oh! He takes one for the team, killing his son. Then as he's ready to let the mist monsters kill him some army guy strolls through like this monstrous AT-AT thing we saw not even a minute ago ain't shit, with straight up refugees in tow in the open air. And so he's having an existential crisis because he's dumb as fuck and sans son.

I watched some cut of the movie that was based on the original version the director screened at festivals. It was much shorter and black and white. It was fantastic. I haven't seen the theatrical cut because I've heard it's utter garbage.
