They're completely new to the show and weren't part of the comic, he brings them up intermittently through other episodes as being somehow able to track him and confusestwo angels as part of the same group

Maybe a bit too on the nose, but I loved how in the story the dad is a gun-toting macho who is expecting a boy he'll raise to be a badass and literally laughs at the idea that he could end up with a baby girl.Then he gets the news that the baby is a girl and his wife died giving birth. And when he reluctantly looks at his daughter for the first time he's like "well, maybe it won't be too bad." Very heartwarming.

Yeah, I agree, I feel like all of the essential moments could have been contracted into 2 or 3 episodes. I'm sure alot of the next four are going to be total filler as well.
This "golden age" of television has given way to heavy handed character development produced for the masses, with Walking Dead being the worst culprit. Makes sense that the network that puts out that show wants it's next hopeful break out to mimic the same slow burn spoonfeeding storytelling.
The sad thing is, this show could be really good if they picked up the pace. First season of Mr. Robot and even season 2 of Homeland would pack alot into every episode, and I feel like this could be dark, hilarious, fun story in that vein, but I can't imagine the network will allow it. They want as many seasons as they can get out of it.
