it surprises the enemy. They think their about to attack stationary defenses, but then they're fighting swordsmen. It's a good counter offense.

They should be waiting until the orcs are compressed together between the spears and the ranks behind them.
At that point they'd be too packed together to fight up and the elves can jump from orc shoulder to orc shoulder, cutting off heads.

You retards don't understand that this whole scene was supposed to reaffirm the competitive nature of elves and dwarves as established in the LOTR series. Ofcourse the smarter move would be to let the charging orcs impale themselves on the dwarves' spears. However, the elves wont let the dwarves get all the credit and honor of winning this battle, so they decide to intervene and thereby save face.
